"One day, we shall die. All the other days, we shall live."
THere's a new TV at work (which is a happy thing), a nice and big Sony Bravia. It has USB and ethernet connections, so since I forgot to bring a HDMI cable I figured I'd try both. Managed to get both connected, but it didn't play the first film I tried. Second film did work, though. Checking online it appears that apparently Sony really, really sucks with compatibility (compared to other brands).
Now the manual says it supports MPEG-2 MP@HL/H14L/ML, AVC BP@L3/MP@L4/HP@L4 (30 Mbps max), and MPEG-4 Visual SP@L6/ASP@L5/ACEP@L4, but I honestly do not really know what that means. Empirically it seems it won't play stuff that is XVID, but DIVX is okay. Or that could be coincidence... Anyone have any knowledge of this?
And it appears it doesn't do subtitles that are .srt, but that was to be expected, considering the video compatibility...
Edit: surprisingly, .mkv does work, streaming anyway.
edit2: figured out most of it![]()

A mid-Atlantic heat wave. Already 80 degrees by 9am. I don't do well with heat and humidity. Tried to mow the lawn last night at dusk, but the heat was so oppressive, and the insects so active....
I still have to mow another 1/3 of an acre. I'm getting too old for this shit.
Just watering the garden at 930am, it was in the mid 80s with stifling humidity. I'm worn out. I'm hot blooded so humidity and I don't mix very well![]()
This tropical storm Debbie isn't nearly as exciting as I was hoping for.![]()

We got tornadoes touching down everywhere. Already have deaths reported. Its going to be a long night.

Not sure why, but I can't get onto IRC. ETG's server keeps refusing connection.
Edit: Nevermind. Seems that it was limited to the irc.enterthegame.com server, since euro.enterthegame.com worked.

Hope is the denial of reality
If you just keep spraying oven cleaner on him 'til you no longer get nauseated by the smell, it's all good
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.
Heat Wave. Triple digits all over the US. 109 in Nashville?!Had some awesome big storms last night, lost power for a while. Apparently lots of folks will be without power for a while, no A/C
Once they come back on-line the surges will be huge, predictable brown-outs? Yeah, how're those power grids holding up? Who says we don't need Infrastructure spending....

I've been going to the same place for work every weekday for the past 11 1/2 years and I am seriously getting itchy feet... I like what I do, I like the place, I like the people so what's my problem?
Monotony...
Such is Life...
Mid-lifecrisisevaluation?
Figured I'd add my two cents....even though that means my opinion costs more than it might be worth. You're older now, your kids are older, too. Going to that same work place doesn't have the same energy dynamics that it used to. It's "easier" now, now that you don't have to juggle so many things at once. You're not struggling to make ends meet and you enjoy your work....but there's less chaos or trying to be two places at once. Fewer kids' soccer games, or being asked to coach, no need to drive kids around, or even "chaperone".
Plus, you might be entering peri-andropause. Sleep patterns change, energy wanes, body fat redistributes, skin and hair changes become obvious, maybe you're getting up in the middle of the night to pee. You might be surprised by moments, or movies, that bring a tear to your eye. You wonder if you're becoming a "softie" or a wuss, and what's the difference between monotony and ageing....
and everything in between.
The typical male midlife crises won't apply to you, because you've already got fast motorcycles, plenty of land, guns, lots of dangerous tools, and time off in the "wilderness". You have enough money to take vacations elsewhere, and you're not looking for a new mate. That's why the monotony seems dire. You know the world is there for your taking....but do you really want to take on the world, when all the elements of happiness are right there in your lap?

Tonight we're shooting a scene in the street, in pretty much the worst neighbourhood of Brussels (which is saying something). Olé.

Maybe you're right, after all our kids are 18 & 16 and quite mature independent young adults, I am the General Manager of one company and my wife is the General Manager of another company so we have sort of peaked career-wise.
Mid life crises are strange things - for example: While I do have no mental issues, no complaints about how I've been treated by my fellow man, no ailments to speak of and I am essentially a happy person in a happy family. I genuinely feel that up to this point I have had a relatively fortunate life and by most standards we are a "successful" couple with "happy" family yet there is this nagging thought in the back of my mind
"Get on with it"...
Maybe this is the perfect recipe for a mid-life crisis, I don't really tend to do the pop psychology101 thing but perhaps if we were struggling through life and not so "fortunate" then we wouldn't have the luxury of all this "navel gazing".
Nah I don't think I'm having a mid life crisis (although I do turn 41 next week) I think I've just got the urge for a change of environment, some new scenery and some fresh faces in my life because they would simply be a welcome change after a long period of repitition.
*shrugs*

Okay, so today I attended a seminar for Physics teachers, aimed at showing us how implement stuff from the DLR (German Airplan and Space Research - research on the design and building side) in our lessons, specifically: The wind tunnel.
It's astounding how often we teachers are hounded to "let the pupils discover science on their own", not to "do so much talking, let the pupils talk more" and to "prepare your lessons carefully and consider every aspect - just now you stood thus in front of the experiment so that one pupil didn't get a good look!"
And it's equally astounding as to how many of those seminars get those things horribly and completely wrong.
First we had to endure bad Powerpoint presentations which would have earned our pupils an "F". Then we stood around the wind tunnel for an hour while the assistant explained the basic workings of the tunnel to us in basic concepts. Please be reminded that our time at university included quite a lot of Physics studies - if I had wanted to, I could've earned my doctorate in Physics in about 2-3 years and indeed several of my colleagues do possess such a degree.
Then we thought that we finally could do some experiments - the plan actually said so. What actually happened: We stood around a miniature version of the tunnel (okay, the real one consumes up to 4 MegaWatts of power) and watched while the assistant did the experiments.
Some more presentations. Then we were allowed to think on how to implement that stuff into our lessons - which wasn't easy since we hadn't heard and done all that much.
Gah. 8 wasted hours.
When the stars threw down their spears
And watered heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?
Do seminars have any purpose other than making money for the presenter?
Hope is the denial of reality
That seminar didn't cost us anything but the gas to get there (at least that, thank Glod!) - it's an effort by the DLR itself to gain recognition among the pupils in order to gain potential employees. And they certainly do interesting and fun stuff - it's just that this particular presentation was lacking severely.
For example, they told us that their wind tunnel is the most silent wind tunnel on this planet - enabling them to not only examine how air flows over a wing but also where it's producing audible sounds. That's kind of important to people living near airports
They're also not only into the material sciences but develop new software for airplanes, helicopters, trains and air control towers, specifically the software which goes into the cockpit. Stuff like that.

Oh, I'm sure they do exciting work on their own; it's just I never heard of a seminar that was well-delivered.

A temp halloween store just opened down the street from me. WalMart is already selling their brand of bland box christmas toys, and Hallmark has Christmas stuff stocked on their end caps.

My mother is mad at me because I challenged one of her posts on FB. Why the fuck do people post things on there and expect no one to disagree/challenge it?

Pretty sure most people post either because they're excited about something or want people to see how smart/cool/witty they are.
