The web is an amazing resource. I esp. like guides that teach you eg. how to get a hundred meals out of a single chicken.

Like I said, you wouldn't love it to be fair, $1 is kinda extreme and the guy isn't much of a cook. $1/meal is a much better proposition.

Over here €1/meal is pushing it, but possible, even with pretty decent food. You'll have to cook for more than one though, but as long as you have friends or a good freezer you'll be okay. We definitely do not have these kind of coupons, though, grocery shopping like this guy does is impossible here. Best deals you can get is stuff like 2 for 1, and they tend not to do those deals on the cheapest and most basic products. The deals are more useful for having better food for the same price, than having cheaper food overall.

One useful tip I have: if there's a street market/farmer's market, by the end of the day they try to get rid of leftovers, super cheap fruit and veggies then.

This challenge seems like a race to the bottom. Something bugs me about the idea that one would even try to live in a developed country on an income slightly higher than what one earns in the most impoverished corners of the world.

Not totally sure why it bugs me, but it does.
