Thread: What made you go WTF today?

A less rockified (and clearer) cover is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x-orWN552U

The idea is that little kids respond to bribery, so when they're learning their alphabet, you trace the letters in honey for them to lick off. I'm skeptical it works, but apparently it was all the rage in medieval Germany (and likely elsewhere).

  2. #2252
    Definitely kinky in adult company!
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

Ah, so that's where that fellatio trick about spelling out the alphabet came from.

Wonder if this is horrible and ill timed joke from Boehners comments saying the party is hoping minorities wont vote.

Tony Blair and George W Bush should be taken to the International Criminal Court in The Hague over the Iraq war, Archbishop Desmond Tutu has said.

Writing in the UK's Observer newspaper, he accused the former leaders of lying about weapons of mass destruction.

The Iraq military campaign had made the world more unstable "than any other conflict in history", he said.
Another peacenik who refuses to let facts get in the way of his rants. Why do these people continue to discredit their cause by regularly spouting such idiocy?

Which part exactly, the last line (which is pretty obviously wrong, even looking just at the name of 'world wars' )? Accusing the then ruling administrations of lying isn't too far fetched, is it?

The last line is so wrong that it puts the sanity of the guy into question.

If that already makes you doubt his sanity, I imagine you have lost all hope for any sanity in any politician, especially in the US. Hyperboles are used non-stop, it seems.

I think Low-key's out-right said that it's a politician's job to lie. I might be misremembering his position

Tutu is not a politician; he's not trying to get elected. He's saying what he actually believes.

Presumably most of the people there don't have the authority of a Nobel peace prize winner.

Comon, as if a Nobel peace prize is worth anything these days

Also, just because you're not up for election does not mean you're not playing politics. Or don't have an agenda, an image, people you want to appeal to, etc.

I would hope that his agenda was bringing about peace, not spreading lies and deceit.

Not that I disagree with you, but I am a little puzzled by your double standards about who are allowed to spread lies and deceit. Especially since you seem to think outright lying is a-okay by politicians, ut activists are not allowed to? Or is it just okay if you're not a 'peacenik' or leftie?

Politicians deal with many issues, and have to make compromises on some to get what they want on others. Activists generally care about a single issue, and if they can't be trusted on that one issue, why should we listen to them at all?

Couple days old, but still pure gold

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD) says he supports student loans, so America’s youth can get a good education. But the government getting involved in education, he believes, puts the country on a slippery slope that could lead to, say, something like the Holocaust.

At a town hall event at a college in Maryland on Wednesday, Bartlett said he could not find “a shred of evidence” in the Constitution that the government should be involved in education. It’s “certainly a good idea” to give students loans, Bartlett said in a video posted by the Washington Post. “But if you can ignore the Constitution to do something good today, tomorrow you will be ignoring the Constitution to do something bad,” he explained. “You could. There are more people in our, in America today of German ancestry than any other … The Holocaust that occurred in Germany — how in the heck could that happen? And when you start down the wrong road, it can be a very slippery slope.”

The Bartlett campaign did not immediately respond to TPM’s request for comment. Barlett’s spokesperson told the Post that the student-loan remarks fit with the congressman’s belief in limited government.
Student loans, the most mechanized mass killing known in human history, what's the difference, ey?

    What?

    What?

I eagerly await the Daily Show's take on this and how long before the government fines people for not taking out student loans to study???

So, I thought to increase my skills in soldering circuits. Bought a soldering iron and a small kit named "Teach yourself soldering".

    First lesson worked.

Second lesson included a bit of searching because the included resistors did not include the 150 KΩ resistor the circuit demanded. Luckily, it was only meant to reduce the voltage in one of the LEDs as proof of concept and thus I was able to deduce that the included 330 KΩ resistor would work as well.

Third lesson... well. It's a bit of a steep ramp-up in difficulty. Not only am I to solder an SMD to the board - with said SMD being a mere 3 millimeters long - no, I'm also to solder an IC working as an op-amp to the board (with the connectors being near as fiddly as the SMD ones!). The most interesting part, however, was the fact that I had to turn to the internet to get some info on how to actually connect the IC. You see, it has 8 pins and I only need three of them. And the diagram doesn't mention at all which pins I'm supposed to use.

I think I'll write the author of this "guide" and give him a piece of my mind. Especially since the box has a big sticker saying: "You don't need previous knowledge in soldering or electronics!"

It is customary to write the kilo in kilo-ohm with a non-capital k, see also km, kV, kcal

I'm attributing the capital K to the fact that he likely copied the info from the parts themselves, in which case a lot of them use mono-spaced, all cap fonts for legibility and ease of printing.
