Does it matter? Wouldn't the best strategy just be to set your own coin randomly?
If its just a single round then I would think randomness would work.
If there's multiple rounds then strategies like "do what your opponent did last round" etc come into play. Though if you do that then if your opponent can figure out what strategy you're on then they win. So again not sure how any strategy can win.
Close enough I guess.Your strategy should be to play heads and tails with a 50% probability each. Neither player is better off deviating from this strategy.

The funny thing is, suppose your opponent wasn't doing 50% for each option (say he did heads EVERYtime) then your strategy would still only tie them. If you're facing a logical opponent it doesn't matter what you do. If I was playing against other humans, I'd start with randomness, but be looking for patterns in their play. Abuse that pattern (if found) until I lost an exchange, then go back to randomness.

Take an isotope with a known half-life. Observe it for that long. If it decays, set your coin to heads. Otherwise, set it to tails.
I don't think you can do better, because any other strategy you pick can be observed and countered by your opponent. Thus the optimal strategy for both players is to act randomly, and hope that luck favors them.

If the other player is dedicated enough, they'll figure out what you're doing though.

New Riddle:
What's the best strategy to statistically win a round-robin Penny Game tournament.
Given the lay out of the field is 98 Logicians (who always play 50% heads/tails randomly), 1 strict pattern player, and You.
By Strict Pattern player I mean A player who has a pattern (it is perhaps a complex one) but they never deviate from it, they don't take in any information from your play as an input to their pattern.
The game rules are the same as loki set out, first to a 100 points per pairing.

I feel like I killed the riddles thread somehow. Hint on the riddle I posted above this one: The key is finding a strategy that will statistically have greater probablity of beating the strict pattern guy than the logicians have. 2nd hint: The reason this strategy exist is because you know he has a non-adaptive pattern.
NEW RIDDLE:
Two convicts are locked in a cell. There is an unbarred window high up in the cell. No matter if they stand on the bed or one on top of the other they can't reach the window to escape. Lots of assumptions in your first "answer", many of them of dubious quality.
I changed some wording but didn't change any meaning in my answer to the riddle, I posed. Also I assumed in the riddle I posted that the Logicians will not change their strategy of play no matter what (which I actually think is quite logical). With that restriction, and the restriction the strict pattern player will also not change his or her pattern then the solution I gave is quite clear.
Abusing patterns is a dangerous game to play when you don't know anything about your opponent, and verse equal players it's nullfied. If you're sufficiently up in points, you can take a risk and check to see if your opponent has caught how strongly you know their pattern (aka try for an abuse). This is a wasted effort verse an equal player (even if that player started the game with a pattern).
You really need to know the percentage of perfect players playing at the tournament, and non-perfect players to know if you should risk trying to abuse a pattern. (In my example you did know that, hence why you can abuse).
