What did you make of D3?

I've never been so fascinated by all the shenanigans on-going -outside- of the actual game. Total PR disaster and I fundamentally HATE the AH and RMAH.

Despite that, the actual gameplay is fun and satisfying, and I'm Paragon level 7 (completed Act 4 inferno in patch 1.0.4. Got to Act 4 in 1.0.3).

I'm not bored with GW2 either. I defo want to get 100% world completion, give PvP a real go and get to a decent level of gear at level 80.

But I also still like to dabble in D3 and -really- want to give TL2 a good go.

    Blah.

I didn't have any real problem with D3. I think I got my money's worth. Haven't gotten to Act 4 inferno yet though.

I've thought a lot of the hate on D3 has been bandwagoning. When I visit their forums, I see tons of posts along the lines of "I've only played 300 hours and I'm already bored! Blizzard FAIL!!". I can't see how getting as much entertainment from the game as people seem to be getting can count as a failure, since half the complaint posts also seem to like to mention how many hundreds of hours they've put into the game, or how many hundreds of runs through Act 3 they've done. While there are certainly legitimate criticisms of the game to be made, I suspect a lot of the hate towards D3 is really just another example of the Internet hivemind getting itself worked up over nothing again.

Borderlands 2 came out last night. Got a couple hours in. With that and GW2, I'm so torn on how to waste my time!

In the same boat..really enjoying both games.

Speaking of Borderlands 2, the Wall Street Journal review of it is fantastic.
Actually the review is utter garbage, but the comments section is fantastic.

Just read it. It's here if anyone else is curious. tl;dr: Borderlands 2 sucks because it's not the same as Call of Duty.

The guy's entitled to his opinion, but he probably shouldn't be getting paid to write it.

The harassment he's suffering as a result is worse, though. Damnit Internet, why do you overreact to everything?

BF3 is currently $10 on Origin. So much for big discounts cheapening their intellectual property

So people are complaining that Torchlight 2 isn't enough like Diablo 3.

In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

Visit a lot of nodes in the early sectors, zig-zag up and down the sector just ahead of your pursuers.

Pause and consider your strategy at the start of each fight. What will reduce the risk to your hull and crew, and minimise the expenditure of consumables (missiles, drone parts)? You may have to run, but if you keep running you won't have enough resources to buy better weapons and crew.

I favour investing in engine improvements, and have my initial crew man the helm, engines and weapons. While you crew is small aim to keep people at the helm and engine. Move your guy from weapons if necessary, but it's often better to make use of the improved recharge time to keep the enemies weapons off-line than boost the shield recharge.

Consider switching off your shield if you see an ion weapon fire.

There's a lot of luck involved. Some games I've picked decent kit, other times I've got through 4 sectors without being able to get any useful upgrades.

For you FTL peoples: how real-timey is it? Is this something where I'm going to need good reflexes to do well?

Has everyone given up on Guild Wars already?

I'm still in there daily. I just keep weird hours, and now I'm splitting time between it and Borderlands 2.

BTW, gogo, if you read this: Click the "General forums" link! You'll be surprised.

Combat can be paused for orders by mashing space

    Muh?

    Explain yourself, Sir!

And I've taken a break from GW2. I'm all about Torchlight 2 now, and, holy *&^% it's good fun! For £15 it's a complete bargain and I think they've really shown Blizzard a thing or two in design. It's so nice to have talent trees and the ability NOT to respec. I like consequences!

It's still the only game I play. Only get ~1hr a day though, at 5pm GMT, so unlikely to coincide with you guys online. Much more at weekends.

Bought a 6th character slot and am giving a determined effort to level up an Elementalist. It's actually ok.

So a few months ago my kids finally managed to talk me into playing Minecraft with them on the xbox. Almost immediately after I downloaded the pc version and wow. I've never found a game more fun and absolutely engaging for so long. I'm so hooked it's embarrassing.

Right. It's a very short demo. First you're being introduced to the whathaveyous, you know: cover is important, get behind that crate. But I want to get behind that policecar. No son, you get behind that crate. Now do this. Don't do this. Anyway, after the first tutorial mission the fore-play continues: You get to pick a site for your base. America or Europe (other continents greyed out (well redded out actually) One gives an advantage to aircraft construction, the other to research and workshop facilities. Soldiers return (non-spoiler alert) and you get to promote one. This is all hard-coded, and only one promotion available. This is mainly to get you to navigate the base. Right away, there's 2 alerts coming in. One from Asia, one from America. You can only respond to one. One mission grants 4 scientists, the other $200. Not responding will mean increased panic in that continent. The demo doesn't go into this, but surely it'll mean a decrease in funding when panic levels rise.

So, on to the point of the demo. The mission. First thing that is clear is that the interface is crap. It's counter-intuitive weird button mapping toecurlingly crap. So they stayed true to the original there. wahey. Scrolling the wheel doesn't zoom in and out. Nope, click and hold the wheel and move mouse up and down (edit: just realised that this is probably a game-pad sacrifice. Couldn't be bothered to map a scroll-wheel in the pc version). But click and holding mousewheel while moving left and right doesn't rotate the screen, nope, that's done with [q] and [e]. And only 4 angles available, so you always scroll 90, looking down at a 45 degree angle. Maybe this can be changed, but I didn't bother to find out for the demo. Ok, nit well and truly picked.

I must say, they did get the atmos right. There's a Hitcockian orchestra trying it's hardest to deliver some dun-dun-dun-dun-dun type of really tense musical score which switches to a slightly higher pitched and more frantic dun-dun-dun-dun-dun from time to time. You're scooting your squad from cover to cover in a leap frog type of way. The aliens, in the US mission at least, weren't really roaming around but rather content to waiting until they get discovered. Not like you saw at the 72 minute live demonstration on youtube. One of my soldiers got wounded so I got to try out the medic, pretty straight forward stuff. And he needed 4 days to recover when I got back. The mission map was rather small though, so there wasn't much room to flank aliens, so not sure how that will pan out tactically in bigger maps. You also only get 4 soldiers the first mission (max 6 for later missions). You do get all 4 types.

Heavy, sporting the rocket launcher. Assault who has run-and-gun (which is incredibly handy). Sniper, needs both TU's to shoot, so he either moves or shoots. And Support with the medkit and smoke grenades.

But for me the demo doesn't reveal whether the game will be good. It's the sense of being completely outgunned at the start and slowly crawling your way back into a fair fight by research and training your squad that made it appealing. The potential is there alright, but the way it'll be implemented will be key.

Any idea whether to preorder or wait? I never preorder but Steam have some interesting offers (possibly CivV for free, don't have that yet).

I do have CIV V, so I won't. I'll simply buy it the day it comes out in the shops. I don't need CIV V for a friend, nore do I need a stinkin badge or customisable soldiers.

By the way: CIV V is at least interesting enough to pre-order I'd say
