Thread: What made you go WTF today?

  1. #2281
You clearly do not see the inherent fun in being pedantic at a German
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

An ad for the vacancy of the Governor of the BoE in the Economist today. Who do they think they're fooling?
    Congratulations America

I'm not sure what the WTF is about. King is leaving, and they desperately need someone qualified. There has been a great deal of speculation that they'll bring in outside talent to run the BoE, and this appears to be them following through on that speculation... yes?

It's as plausible as a job ad for the position of secretary of state or supreme court justice. I think it's just a waste of tax-money to blow some fairy dust in our eyes.
    Congratulations America

What about someone of German descent being pedantic?

What about them? That's a given.
When the stars threw down their spears
And watered heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?

I'm of German descent, which adds another level to this whole comment chain.

Clearly we need more Objectivists in the sciences

So I argued with my father about a inner-German problem. He disagreed with me. We agreed to disagree.

Some time later he pointed out the situation in Syria: "Now, that is a problem worth discussing!"

As if one was allowed to have only one opinion at a time and only about the most hot-topic issue at the moment...

So, uhh, Passion Pits' "Take a Walk" has been rather popular on the radio lately, even appearing in a Taco Bell commercial. Seems to be a song about the collapse of the American Dream, up until the lyric where the singer states:

"Honey, it's your son, I think I borrowed just too much.
We had taxes, we had bills, we had a lifestyle to front.
And tonight I swear I'll come home and we'll make love like we're young.
But tomorrow , you'll cook dinner for the neighbors and their kids."

Is this just another instance of people not listening to lyrics carefully, because I don't seem to see anyone else bringing up this curious choice of words.

Is sour candy banned in the UK? I've been told that yet another brand of American sour candy (Sour Patch Kids) is entirely sweet in the UK. I've also had the displeasure of buying many different "sour" candies in the UK, just to realize that none of them are remotely sour...

Maybe Brits just don't like 'em sour? I know I do, and you can definitely get them over here (thank god)

Considering that the Brits are always sour, I don't know why that would be the case. They also ban sweet cereals (or at least severely limit the sugar content), and the British versions of several American cereals are nowhere near as nice as the American versions. Come to think of it, the Brits are also pretty bitter.

Banning sugary cereals has at least a rationale (I'm assuming child obesity), can't think of any reason to ban sour candy..

..too sugary cereals are shitty anyway, I like my Kellogg's fruit 'n fibre Though I'm sure that still has some sugar in it.

Honeycomb isn't very good. Golden grahams is best breakfast cereal.

Pfft. Straight graham crackers in a bowl of milk

The only WIC cereal the kids will eat is frosted mini wheats

Cracklin' Oat Bran tastes just like graham crackers but doesn't get soggy in milk. Honey Graham Oh's are great, straight from the box.

I enjoy reading labels on boxes. Sometimes post-consumer consumption reading. My box of Triscuit crackers says:

NATURAL FLAVOR WITH OTHER NATURAL FLAVOR

right there, under its big Triscuit Roasted Garlic name.

The socalled "debate" tonight between Obama and Romney. I couldn't find the parts involving politics. I think that you can just mute the show, look at who is appearing more confident, and you'll have the winner. That is how superficial it is. WHAT THE FUCK, AMERICA.
Tomorrow is like an empty canvas that extends endlessly, what should I sketch on it?

  27. #2307
That's been true since the Nixon/Kennedy debate.

A viable excuse? I thought the American people would have been smart enough to not blindly accept such an election process, and look toward other countries for their example.

You really need to look at your own backyard. Personality, charisma, etc. matter in all political races, not just American ones. And telling people in one country to follow the lead of people in another is a recipe for a nationalist reaction.
