Thread: RomneyRyan 2012!

    Way worse than birthers
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

White tie event at Al Smith dinner in NYC. Sort of like the National Correspondent dinner / roast. I gotta say, Obama has a much better sense of political sarcasm, and can handle self-depracating humor much easier than Romney. We all know that writers are behind the texts and jokes, but the delivery -- and its success -- has to come from the speaker. Romney didn't come across as having much fun with the event, even though he can "deliver" a good joke quite well.

This is just my (biased) take, but Romney can't seem to rid himself of whatever ramrod item is stuck up his ass. He walks and talks like that thing up his ass is messing with his groove. He can't even roll up his shirt sleeves in a random or haphazard way that might appear crumpled, or real, when talking to "real" working class folks. His handlers probably tell him when to wear jeans, but even his jeans scream of privilege, with an inappropriate belt.

I feel a pang of sympathy for the man. He tries so hard to fit in with average working folks, in an effort to appeal to them, but misses the mark most times. No strange wonder, since he's never really been an average working guy, coming from nothing to become something.

Perhaps there's no amount of PR handling that can substitute for that natural public appeal that comes with being comfortable in one's own skin. Biden's haircut has bugged the crap outta me for years, but at least it's his choice of barbering, and not what pollsters tell him would be more appealing to the voter.

Anyone willing to run for POTUS in the modern age probably has some "questionable" ego and control/power issues. They're already a bit crazy to trade or risk their personal and intimate relationships in exchange for being "leader of the free world". Some of our best potential leaders would never make that trade, with good reason.

But in that vein, Romney's choices should be assessed and evaluated. He's apparently been running for POTUS since his father's run for POTUS. ie, practically his whole life. Every success he had was filed under "Future POTUS Campaign", and was used as a stepping stone for greater political office. MASS residents complain that he lost interest in being Governor, when he turned his sights toward greater ambitions. Romney is an ambitious man, no doubt.

But the bigger question remains....for whom is he ambitious?

It may be difficult for Romney to fit in with average working folks because he is NOT average. From wikipedia:

    ****
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with highest honors, in 1971,[46] giving commencement addresses to both the College of Humanities and to the whole of BYU.[nb 7]
The Romneys' first son, Taggart, was born in 1970[34] while they were undergraduates at BYU and living in a basement apartment.[46] Ann subsequently gave birth to Matthew (1971) and Joshua (1975). Benjamin (1978) and Craig (1981) would arrive later, after Romney began his business career.[34]
Mitt Romney wanted to pursue a business path, but his father advised him that a law degree would be valuable to his career even if he did not become a lawyer.[56][57] Thus, he enrolled in the recently created joint Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration four-year program coordinated between Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School.[58] He readily adapted to the business school's pragmatic, data-driven case study method of teaching.[57] Living in a Belmont, Massachusetts house with Ann and their two children, his social experience in college differed from most of his classmates.[47][57] He was nonideological and did not involve himself in the political issues of the day.[47][57] He graduated in 1975 cum laude from the law school, in the top third of that class, and was named a Baker Scholar for graduating in the top five percent of his business school class.[54][58]

    *****

He then went on to have a brilliant career.

    ****
In 1977, he was hired by Bain & Company, a management consulting firm in Boston formed a few years earlier by Bill Bain and other ex-BCG employees.[56][62][64] Bain would later say of the thirty-year-old Romney, "He had the appearance of confidence of a guy who was maybe ten years older."[65] Unlike other consulting firms, which issued recommendations and then departed, Bain & Company immersed itself in a client's business and worked with them until changes were implemented.[56][62] Romney became a vice-president of the firm in 1978,[14] and worked with clients such as the Monsanto Company, Outboard Marine Corporation, Burlington Industries, and Corning Incorporated.[59] Within a few years, the firm considered him one of their best consultants and clients sometimes sought to use him over more senior partners.[56][66]

    *****

In 1990, facing financial collapse, Bain & Company asked Romney to return.[69] Announced as its new CEO in January 1991,[73][74] he drew a symbolic salary of one dollar[69] (remaining managing general partner of Bain Capital during this time).[73][74] He oversaw an effort to restructure Bain & Company's employee stock-ownership plan, real-estate deals, and bank loans, while rallying the firm's one thousand employees, imposing a new governing structure that excluded Bain and the other founding partners from control, and increasing fiscal transparency.[56][59][69] Within about a year, he had led Bain & Company through a turnaround and returned the firm to profitability.[59] He turned Bain & Company over to new leadership and returned to Bain Capital in December 1992.[56][87][88]

    *****

The guy is brilliant, a business man who flourished. Because of the petty jealousies and class envy that exist today Romney can't even make it the central part of his campaign. I think you are right on the money when you say he doesn't relate well to the "average working folks." He is not average. He is, simply put - better and smarter. The great thing about Romney is that unlike Obama he doesn't think he should run everyone's lives. He doesn't think its the government's job to hold everyone's hand from cradle to grave. He doesn't think that just because he's smarter he is entitled to make decisions for other people.

Both Romney and Obama are intelligent - the difference is that Obama is arrogant and controlling. Obama may be able to fake being a regular Joe more easily then Romney but what does that say about him? Only that he is better at being deceptive.

This should be a minimum requirement for anyone running for president, and that's not sarcasm. The leader of our nation should be well above average. If there was any way to know he wouldn't sign up to his running mate's fiscal lunacy and the Social Right Wing's anti-freedom agenda, I might consider voting for him.

Um, you just totally contradicted yourself. By definition to seek election in a representative democracy you are signing up as able and willing to make decisions for other people. That's what government representatives do....

Eh? Fighting from within government to have government do less is not making decisions for other people. If you want to boil it down to the strict verbiage, then yes obviously the president makes decisions for the country however he wants to give people MORE freedom not less. Democrats are obsessed with taking away people's freedoms. Perhaps the most powerful freedom of all is the right to keep what you have earned. To know your work is rewarded and not stolen from you. The right of property is sacrosanct.

To be sure conservatives aren't fully on board the freedom express. They do wish to limit people's rights in ways I despite but on the whole they preserve more freedom via economic issues then they suppress via social issues.

Um, any elected representative's key purpose is to make decisions on behalf of his/her constituents. There is nothing strict or hair splitting or semantic about it. That's what representative government is.

Can you give an example of what Obama has done to take away your freedom?

Do you think real universal health care would give people more freedom?

Obama care hasn't fully kicked in yet but increased taxation or the forced purchasing of a healthcare plan impacts my freedom - regardless if I would never choose to go without healthcare insurance. The choice is now gone without significant financial hardship.

New banking regulations have taken away my reward points for debit card transactions.

New banking regulations have impacted business and limited certain types of products and services they have provided.

Obama has selected judges that are in the mold of Stevens and Ginsburg who are pretty anti-freedom. Look at how the liberal branch of the SC voted in regards to the Kelo case.

Tax dollars were used to bail out unions (GM).

Obama has pushed for more guns to be regulated - he's failed but attempts to take my freedom are almost as bad as successes.

Obama administration increased regulations on MPG standards. If I want to buy a gas guzzling truck that spews "green house gases" by God that is my right.

Obama has been in favor of limiting political free speech if the group doing the free speech happens to be incorporated. Again - attempts to limit freedom are almost as bad since he will continue to try to limit those freedoms.

Are you flipping serious? If I have money taken from me at that point of the gun to bail out some union low life's I'd rather see out of a job - how the hell is that not an attack on my freedom?

You may be welcome to buy them but your right to use them in various ways should be balanced by mankind's right to whatever commons it is you jeopardise with your gas-guzzlers.

Taxation for the public good doesn't take away your freedom. Yes, some Freeedoms can be limited by laws and/or certain taxes. Previously, you've advocated for "sin" taxes that discourage certain choices in how money is spent (smoking, drinking, etc.)

But taxes are also used for things like education / clean air and water / public health and safety / transportation....and everything else that enhances free and open societies engaging in commerce. That plays a part in your ability to work for a paycheck and support your family in the first place. As an Insurance Industry employee, it's pretty rich for you to complain about living in a developed first world nation.

By the way, the auto rescue was a government loan, paid back with interest, with plenty of concessions from union workers. It kept a crucial industry from causing the US to spiral further into a Depression. It came at a time when NO private equity was available, because Banks and Financial firms were also melting. That deal came with many more strings attached and congressional oversight, than the rescue of Big Banks and Financial firms.

Why do you insist on changing the definition of every word in the dictionary? Just because someone violates your freedom for the public good doesn't make it any less of a violation of your freedom. One might argue that the violation was justified, but one certainly can't claim that there was no violation.
Hope is the denial of reality

In case you've missed the obvious, for the lefties here, freedom is synonymous with the public good.

Ooh, and according the the "righties" here, only the left "violates".

That just means we should be more careful in our verbiage. A limitation or restriction of freedom doesn't mean freedom has been altogether violated.

I'm not changing dictionary definitions. But I am saying that a parking violation is NOT the same thing as a human/civil right violation. Steely's thread thread in General Chat not withstanding.

My land - yes. My gas, absolutely if I pay for it.

Air being a little bit trick, if the air is the worlds problem because of "global warming" oops I mean "global climate change" (cus you know CO2 sometimes causes ice on the south pole!) would you require America to go to town on China? Or do you think they should only crack down on its own citizens?
