My sister's family-in-law on Long Island was told to expect power outages until the end of this week. Damn, that's a long time.

We just had no electricity, heat, or hot water, so not terrible. More annoying not being able to get work done. Had plenty of LED flashlights to use for light, and we cooked everything on our gas stove. Late Tuesday our neighbor came back with a generator and ran a line to our refrigerator so we only occasionally had to worry about food spoilage. The location I work at is still without power, so I don't really have to worry about the gas shortage yet. It was back to eating when food was prepared, reading books, playing boardgames, and listening to the radio (hand crank powered). Pretty much camping inside a house.
Power took a while to come back mainly because our block was out due to three downed trees. One of the three split in half, and another fell over, took out a line, and came to rest at an angle in another tree. Considering other people I know, this isn't that bad of an outcome at all.

Glad to hear you had a gas stove and could at least cook food before it spoiled. I stocked up on ice and put it in the fridge like it was a big ass cooler. That only works for about 3 days, though. Our cooking was limited to charcoal grilling outside. Propane tanks for grills ran out pretty fast.

<I'd prefer low temps, especially with snow. Can always build a fire to cook and keep warm, with melted snow for drinking water. Easier to walk on, and move, frozen water than to swim in, or pump out, liquid water.>
Low temperatures can be fixed with the relatively low tech blanket, or clothing. Not warm enough? Use more blankets/clothing. Too hot? Use less blankets/clothing.

Exactly. And it's easier to hunt for "food" that stays alive in cold weather. Bambi, Thumper, Yogi, etc.
