Thread: What is making you happy right now

In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

tsk, seems a shame not to combine both things. Giving a small % of their album sales to disaster relief might even sell more albums.

Have you ever considered becoming a global consultant? You seem to know how to do everyone's job better than they can. If only everyone had your talents at their disposal.

Commonwealth Avenue. It's one of the main drags going roughly east-west along the north end of Brookline; runs right through Boston University. Has the B branch of the Green Line.

You're not the only one with opinions.

I'm going to drive an elderly couple to their polling station tomorrow. They're new in town and don't drive, or really know bus routes or where things are. She seemed happy about getting a ride. But it seemed sad to suggest they bring a stool or folding chair, in case the lines are long.

Driver who drove on pavement to avoid school bus told to wear 'idiot' sign

A woman caught on camera driving on a pavement to avoid a Cleveland school bus unloading children will have to stand at a crossroads wearing a sign describing herself as an idiot.

A Cleveland municipal court judge on Monday ordered 32-year-old Shena Hardin to stand at the crossroads on two days next week. She will have to wear a sign that reads: "Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus."

The judge ordered her to wear the sign from 7.45am to 8.45am on both days.

    No more robo-calls!

It had gotten ridiculous -- was still getting calls almost hourly yesterday. Ann Romney called about 5 hours after I'd already voted.

You're going to start getting 2016 robo-calls tomorrow.

I can't decide which was better, Colber' doing essentially that ^ on his show, or Jon rubbing Fox News' face in their own waste like a naughty, naughty puppy

The ginger's mum took us all to a show tonight. I was afraid it would be something bizarre, abstract, annoyingly highbrow... but it was a hilarious show where two of Sweden's most beloved entertainers helped an anxious audience unite in self-pitying laughter at the many small soul-crushing fears that plague our daily lives in this vain and trend-obsessed society. Funny, friendly, good music, not snarky or mean. Imagine it's done more good in the capital

Turns out that a great way to massively reduce productivity at a science/engineering place is to have a building torn down right across the coffee room! Right now there are six people staring out of the window, commenting on the power of the demolishing machines

What's the ratio of men to women in the coffee room?
When the stars threw down their spears
And watered heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?

Both my kids were home for a couple of days over Veteran's Day. We combined birthday celebrations to enjoy a fancy restaurant meal, and a James Bond theater movie. We watched Band of Brothers on TV, they 'texted' their WWII grandpa, and made comments on his Facebook page. <<don't get me started on that>>

I was also happy they could help me out with fall clean-up and winter preparations. We had the lovely gift of homemade Greek pita from my sister's in-laws...both meat and cheese! An added pleasantry was the Boy Scout delivering our chocolate-covered popcorn, just in time for chilly evenings in front of the fireplace, watching movies.

One of the most high-profile parliamentary representatives of the Sweden Democrats was recently accused of uttering racist comments, calling a woman a whore and being a total dickbag towards an immigrant and a drunk a couple of years ago. The immigrant in question, a comedian, uploaded some unfavorable clips from the incident to youtube. In response, the politician uploaded a heavily edited version that made him look hella good, innocent, unfairly criticised. However, witnesses told a Swedish tabloid that's been working hard against the Sweden Democrats a story that was very different from the politician's version. The tabloid interviewed the politician and asked him to comment on the witness reports, and he denied everything. Not only that but he also explained how innocent and awesome he is, how he'd never, how it's obviously all lies because he's just not that kind of a person, and isn't it convenient for our enemies, blah blah blah, "the truth will out".

So today the tabloid released what looks to be the entirety of the clip--filmed by another high-profile and extraordinarily stupid asshat of a Sweden Democrat--and it basically proves the guy to be a liar and a douche to boot. This is just barely a month after the SD's party leader has publicly announced that their party will not condone racism, extremism, misogyny etc. So painfully embarrassing. The politician has had to resign from almost all his positions in the party, which is great. Less great that he stays in the parliament and keeps his high salary.

It'll be interesting to see what else the tabloid has up its sleeve, and to find out how the video got into their hands.

In an attempt to use positive affirmations (instead of the artistic use of negative space) I am glad to be alive. Being alive doesn't make me "happy", indeed, it's often the being alive part that makes "happy" quite confusing. What does Happy even mean? I'd be happy to grow old gracefully, without pain, and with my children feeling no burden while I age. Is that realistic? Probably not. I didn't have decades of my own parents ageing, or relying on me during their dotage....they died much earlier than my willingness to care for them was put to task.

Happy is such a relative term, it's not even relative any more. Happy RIGHT NOW, that's what people understand.
