The Demise of Common Sense?

Inspired by none other than Ominous Gamer posting pics of his infant daughter with pierced ears/earrings.

Not to put him too much on the defensive, but yeah. This is the kind of thing that leads to people saying, "But no one told me it might be dangerous! There was no printed warning or anything! We went to a booth at the mall, and it looked safe enough....if it weren't safe they wouldn't be piercing infant's ears, right?"

Next thing ya know, the baby chokes on the earring. Or gets a local infection that turns out to be some "ominous" flesh-eating staph, or sepsis. A grieving parent loses their baby, an innocent life is injured or lost, there oughta be a law!.....or why didn't someone warn us?....or fill-in-the-blank.

This reminds me of people who use lawn mowers as hedge cutters, and didn't understand why they got their hand chopped off or lost an eyeball from flying debris. And why there are dummie devices to cut off the engines....due to lawsuits.

I despise law suits as a way to encourage consumer common sense. But alas, this seems to be our future. Until people start using their common sense.

Another issue is what if the child didn't want piercings? Shouldn't parents wait until the child is at least old enough to say yes before forcing something so asolutely unnecessary on them.

Never occurred to parents why there are not tiny buttons on baby clothes? Or stuffed animals with "accessories" that have warning labels, or tags that say "not intended for sleepwear"? Or why crib rungs are close together? Geez.....may as well put the infant in a regular adult bed with a bowl of Legos


EDIT Now I know why there was some stupid initiative to make hot dogs into a new shape, so kids didn't choke on them. FFS.

I don't think it's wrong for a parent to do that, but I wouldn't do it with my own kids. Let 'em choose when they are older. And hold ear piercings over them as currency to get something you want when they are old enough to want them.

We got plenty of paperwork on it. We had to sign for it as well. Its not like we took her to some hole in the wall tattoo shop. We clean them, and we're watching to see if they irritate her. So far no choking, dead ears, or deadly infections.

But whats with the "what ifs" and "before you know"? You really shelter your family like this? Jesus. Lawn mowers, lawsuits, choking...over a pair of earrings? Christ, get over yourself.

Most of her outfits have snap buttons (which do come off), or zippers (everyone knows how they break).
And she loves duplos, and our bed We also swing her around in a blanket and toss her up and down!

I think you're heading in the wrong direction though. These crap warnings and age appropriate toys aren't to make the environment safer for the baby, its to save the baby cause the parents don't pay attention.

I didn't deny Wraith's post, I can't really. While I don't know of any females that didn't get earrings sooner or later and how at this age it makes the process easier; but that wouldn't really defend againist that. I fully admit we dress her up for the comments. Why else would Tshirt Hell sell baby outfits?

But I do need to correct the picture, Scarlett isn't wearing mittens to stop herself from scratching herself, they should totally make a warning label for that!

There's a show called "1,000 Ways To Die". It's like a Darwin award for every story. Last night's episode had the guy who microwaved his lava lamp, to make the pretty globules move faster. Exploded in his face, of course.

I'm amazed at the number of news stories about 'good ideas gone wrong'. News of the Weird, the list keeps getting longer. Are people getting dumber or losing common sense, or what?

Well there are some that are not. Those ones are mainly people in the wrong place at the wrong time, freak accidents, or freak medical reasons.

I don't purposefully watch it. If I tune in to watch something on...its Discovery right?...and its before that show, I'll leave it on as I'm not going to waste time looking for something to watch for 5-15 minutes before Mythbusters, etc.

The few that I'm referring to though are for instance the "sexy pianist" who died because one of the heels on her high heel shoes snapped off when descending a staircase, a Japanese couple that died due to the excitement they experienced before finally getting to have sex, and a guy who was impaled through the chest by his remote control plane because it stalled out and the wind carried it into him, which he couldn't see happening as the direction it was coming from was in line with the sun...

I dunno, we didn't have plastic trash bags when I was a kid, but we did have balloons. No baby sitter or parent would dare leave balloons around an unattended toddler, let alone tie them to their crib, put them down for a nap, and leave the room......

I think the big difference is that it also happened in the past, but you just didn't hear about it. These days with tv and internet you hear about all news instantly. You seem to think that everybody back in 'your time' was responsible, but they weren't. You just notice more often now.

Of course babies have choked in the past! And I'm not just talking 'my time' but my grandparents' time, and before. Used to be wet nurses, nannies, infants were never unattended in a crib....with a baby monitor or webcam....

Dig out a legacy baptismal gown, it probably had tiny buttons. Difference then to now is the type and degree of supervision. There IS a gap. Every mother and midwife used to "know" infants don't tolerate cow's milk, let alone fruit juices. Or how to prevent diaper rash or treat it. Or that kids put everything in their mouths. (The size and components of early silver baby rattles are a great example: they were large enough with a welded handle and inner noise makers that no child could choke on them, and they didn't break.)

But now we have an entire generation of people who don't know these things.....they have to take parenting classes and read about baby-proofing their homes. And still we end up with parents that don't dilute infant formula properly, and babe gets severely ill.

Was just an observation ya know. As our world gets more complicated we rely on warning labels or consumer protection agencies instead of common sense. You'd think by now everyone would know electricity and water don't mix......but idiots get electrocuted all the time!

And people used to ride holding their babies instead of putting them in carseats, and there was no such thing as babyproofing the house.

Both of my children wore clothing with buttons. They managed to survive.

The only baby gates they ever experienced were at my mother's house in the dining room, and that had more to do with the fact that her china cost more than my car than from a desire to protect them. We did have latches on the cabinets with the chemicals, which kept them out for oh 2 minutes after my daughter decided she wanted to see what was in there.

No nannies, no babysitters, no daycare (but yes to half-day preschool).

And I'm not sure what fantasy world you're living in where people didn't leave their infants in the crib to go take care of things when they were sleeping.

I do think piercing a kids ears is stupid, though.
