We've had a gorgeous spring in the NE! But the tree pollen + open windows = allergies. Not just human seasonal allergies, but computer networks and wireless routers 'allergic' to the microscopic dust. Even my mouse has been sneezing from its eye.
Why do Floridians keep trying to grow grassy lawns? That's as stupid as trying to grow northern trees/shrubs/plants not suited for hot climate zones, using a gazillion gallons of precious fresh water.House being built behind me put grass down yesterday, and it stormed like a motherfucka overnight, so the grass washed away into the canal and blocked the drains, so everything got nice and flooded.
but I got a shit ton of free augustine grass out of itand 2 recycling bins, and a 40 gallon trashcan.

As part of Operation Downsize, I threw out an Air Cast for a foot injury I got half a decade ago. I reasoned I wouldn't need that thing lying around. Just this week I began to wonder if I should be exercising it as we did in physical therapy, even though it's been so damn long and the thing feels fine.
Then yesterday the bus driver lets people off in a really awkward spot. Someone goes down, I try to help and catch her before she falls into a pile of garbage. I fail, but deeply twist my foot in the same way as four years ago. Besides the shame, frustration and pain (and the driving I have to do tomorrow...and the potential impact on my exercise routine), I had to buy a new Air Cast today.
not just grassy, but St Augustine grassy. possibly the thirstiest, weakest and most wasteful grass on the market. Its like giving the finger to the environment and water supply.
I'm not a fan of most of the drought resistant plants that will grow in florida, they look so damn waxy I might as well plant fake shit. I don't however have problems with maintained weed yards. Just as green, with a bit of variety.

My new bird feeder has some downsides. I'm not a morning person, but around 5am....I'm awakened by the damn birds, fighting over the seeds. Squawking and screeching. Not melodic chirps or tweets...but small wars outside my window. Some big bad black crows are part of this mix. They add a noxious sound and dark presence. Eww.

My cats are acting old, but they're only 8-10 yrs old.
One catnip mouse is only good for about 15 minutes of play, but a day-long nap. Their new corrugated scratching pad sees about 10 seconds of claw time, followed by some biting at the rope cordthen becomes a nap bed. I got them a feather-topped wobble ball, but they just stare at it a while, yawn, and walk around it. The fishing rod toy and laser pointer are ho-hum after a few minutes. They don't even run from window-to-window to "chase" the wildlife outside like they used to, but I suspect their vision and hearing are "elderly" now.
Any ideas on how to spark senior house cat activity....short of getting a new kitten?
Get a leash and take them for a walk?

I tried that when they were adopted, and younger. Neither one could get past a neck collar or chest harness, let alone a leash. They just laid down like they were trapped and helpless. They didn't take well to trips in the car, either. Both hid under the seats, petrified.
They're shelter-rescue cats. Isabel spent several months at an SPCA shelter, but wasn't adopted in a 'timely manner'. She was on the euthanasia list until a no-kill shelter took her in....where she spent another TWO YEARS in a plexiglass cage, waiting for adoption.
Really wish the news wouldn't do this. The public as a whole is fucking stupid, and stuff like this just makes my job harder.

I live between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart - the flooding was really bad in some areas. We were quite lucky here. They did have to close the main road out of my village, though. It looked like a river rapid, yesterday.

Our closest cousin and his family were supposed to come to my wedding. We've all been looking forward to it and my sis has worked hard to make sure they comply with every request and requirement. Today, just a couple of months before the wedding (and several months after the application was submitted), the visa application was rejected. The baby-diplomat schmuck--with the stupid French name--who processed the application wrote that they had not proven that they were well established in Bangladesh or that they had much in the way of property or "very good personal wealth" in general. Now, Bangladesh is a poor country, even by Swedish diplomat standards, but my cousin owns valuable land and property in Dhaka. Only, no-one ever told him once throughout the application process and over the course of several interviews that they needed to submit any title deeds or the like.
What's moreis the part of the decision that says their application was denied in large part due to their inability to prove they would NOT remain in Sweden after their visas expire. I mean, I get it, it must be a lot more fun to be a paperless immigrant constantly on the run in a racist city coming apart at the seams (okay, not really) under the steadily rising pressure generated by social unrest and inequity... than to be a reasonably well-to-do land-owner in Bangladesh... y'know, our TV is way waaay better, only a year behind the US... but, all that aside, how do you prove to a schmuck you don't want to really move to his country full of douchebags? What level of "risk" or uncertainty is acceptable, and can it be quantified? Almost certainly not, in this case, which means visa applicants are at the mercy of embassy clerks' ultimately fairly arbitrary judgement. No doubt he was following internal guidelines to the letter but he was almost certainly not in any way facilitating the visa applications of family members of EU nationals.

In the US, they look for job, family, investments as proxies for someone intending to leave. But yes, immigration people are generally assholes.

edit--citing your wedding as reason for travel might make Swedish authorities leery of in-laws, and future family members wanting citizenship.
GGT, many countries don't have automatic visa-free travel, even for business or tourism. You are privileged to have a US passport; that gives you about 160-odd countries you can visit without any trouble (a handful of other rich countries have marginally more countries one can visit visa-free). A Bangladeshi passport gives you visa-free travel to only 30-odd countries, most of which are tiny islands.
