Thread: Minimum Wage and McBudgets

What's the median education level of a fast food worker once you exclude college students trying to make some money on the side? Do you think there should be no financial consequences to people not finishing high school?

In my country, I was doctor? What's your point, sir.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

So if they want to unionize in order to negotiate a fairer hand shake, I see no problem there.
Sure, I don't have any problems with people unionizing, but by the same token I don't have any problems with at-will employment and a companies decision not to negotiate with unions.

Does that include a company's "right" to forbid employees from unionizing? Not necessarily topical, just curious.

The liberal position is that workers are free to unionize and firms are free to fire anyone who doesn't want to work for the offered amount of money.

It does, though that would probably depend on your definition of forbid. It could terminate the employment of any employee for any reason, but that's not stopping employees from creating a union, or organizing privately to form a block of employees who would be willing to quit if their demands weren't met.

I wonder what the lefty position is on a bunch of firms coming together and agreeing to refuse to employ anyone for above a certain wage.

It kinda does stop the employees from forming a union if they'd go hungry and homeless because of it. There is an inherent disparity of power between (low-skill) labour and capital.

I think cartels are frowned upon across the spectrum, though I guess in the age of Gordon Gekko that's not necessarily true.

EDIT: I do like that you un-ironically cited "corporations are people, my friend!". You've got moxy, kid.

I think you might be underestimating the costs associated with losing a large number of employees. It isn't an insignificant, or inexpensive task to find, hire, train and manage a large number of new people. That would give you a good amount of leverage in the discussion.

In an ideal world, sure. I am reminded, however, of certain e-mails being circulated before 2012 where employers encouraged one another to not hire anyone for purely political cum racist reasons. Neither party is guaranteed to be a rational actor, and again the larger risk lies with the party whose livelyhood is being provided by the other. The people in sweat-shops winding copper wire for a god-awful amount of hours a day know they can be instantly replaced, and so does the employer. Does this make for awesome copper wire winding? You bet your ass, but that's again for the benefit of capital, not labour, or human beings. (I use the term loosely, you understand what I mean.)

Over here, and I think in Scandinavia too, employers are also organized in unions, and generally conduct collective bargaining on a national level, and together form an institutionalised social economic council that advises the government. For example, they agreed on raising the pension age before the government could. It's nicer when people work together, and only fair that both sides are organized. So, this leftie has no problem with that. Doesn't mean the unions will agree with a reduction in wages that is unreasonable, much like employers don't give in to everything a union wants.

Keep in mind that unions aren't per se as fucked up as American unions seem to be.

Does flexibility matter for nothing? Why should dying industries be forced into the same wage concessions as growing ones? Why should a company be expected to compensate a useless worker as well as a good one? Where's the incentive to innovate? The incentive for workers to work hard?

    1) Not sure where you're going with this.. Flexibility is a rather vague and general term.
    2) they shouldn't
    3) they shouldn't
    4) profit, I'd say
    5) promotion and not losing your job, bonuses, etc

Sorry, what was the point of your post with sweeping vague cries?

Maybe he's annoyed someone actually answered his previous question, which was presumably meant as a clever rhetorical question? And followed it up with some more,I suppose.

Look, I think you'll be hard pressed to find an instance of me saying that there aren't genuine cases of people suffering from chance and misfortune. I certainly believe there are. I also believe there are people who suffer from consequences of poor life decisions, and continue to make choices that aren't likely to result in a comfortable or happy life. One of the greatest tragedies is that these same problems can become generational, and that children born into these homes are starting off at a significant disadvantage. I think it's 'fairy land' thinking that our actions don't have consequences and that we have no power to make meaningful and productive changes to our life.
I'm not saying that we have no power over the course of our lives. I'm saying that the capitalistic creed of "you can overcome hardship if you only work hard enough" is problematic because only the successful people are actually visible. You usually don't see the ones who did the same thing but failed. Unless they failed spectacularly for some reason or the other.
That's the carrot dangled before people's noses: Work hard, learn stuff and you'll be guaranteed to succeed!

Unless you don't. And if you don't succeed then it's all your own damn fault. Never mind any extraneous circumstances.

I disagree with your premise. There are degrees of success, it's not a binary state. Except in fringe examples it almost goes without saying that if an individual is working hard they will be more successful than had they decided to do as little as possible, regardless of circumstance. Now, hard work alone does not necessitate a comfortable life, but it can make your life better. I believe there is an inherit value in personal productivity.

Especially the claim that college kids are taking part time jobs for fun money instead of for survivial.

Oh, come on now, I'm sure they have several thousand dollars of tuition money just lying on the side of the road around there!

I think you might be thinking of the thousands of dollars of loan money the student can't ever legally shake. It's a great business for everyone not a student!

I don't think it's a particularly difficult notion, so I'm not sure if you are being purposefully obtuse or I am not being clear. Let me try again. All things being equal the person who is willing and able to work hard will have a better life than the person who is not. They may not have a perfect life, they may not have an easy life, but almost universally their life will be better than it would have otherwise been for their work ethic and effort.

The point is that college students only have the job temporary. It doesn't really matter if they're losing money each year.

I'm sorry, but this is utter nonsense. And not just the part about workforce participation rates meaning we need to artificially inflate the wages of those who are still working. And not even the strawman about individual firms wanting to expand markets.

What's perhaps most nonsensical is the idea that firms pay their employees to create a market for the goods that firm sells. Does a Jaguar dealership have an obligation to make sure its employees can afford Jaguars? Does a factory making nuclear reactors have an obligation to make sure its employees can afford nuclear powers? It's nonsense, and not something you can just legislate into existence without exposing how nonsensical it is.

It's not the obligation of any single firm (nor is it possible for any firm) to magically "prop up" the economy by raising wages. That's not how it works -- businesses are focused on selling to their customers, and they make their cost structure work in a way that enables them to do so. Whether it's Costco or Walmart or Facebook or the corner deli, the onus is on them to make it work. Not government to take these slogans about "folks should be able to afford what they sell" and try to make legislation out of it.

I believe they call it Humanitarian Capitalism, which includes the employees/workers in the flow of capital/income. Win/Win.

It's been "inexpensive" to hire people since the Great Recession, but they're not --- because of sluggish consumer demand and anxiety about the economy. So it's become a Mexican Standoff of who blinks first, those with capital vs those with none?

How can capitalism create business growth and prosperity....when a majority, or growing numbers of the population is either unemployed, underemployed, underpaid, and barely keeping up with COL? All business needs buyers, consumers with money to spend. It's easy to exploit workers in the name of capital outlandish profits, particularly during big transitions like we're seeing now.

When millions of middle-income jobs simply vanished, with no replacements, and trillions of wealth was extracted from the economy....that came at the expense of "the people". The People bailed out Big Banks and financial institutions, the Fed pumped trillions into propping up capital holders and 'market makers', favoring the top 1%. So where are the jobs? When does that trickle-down theory actually work in the new reality?
    See above.

And the reason it's "inexpensive" to hire people is because there's a recession. The recourse is to push the economy out of a recession. It's insane to plan a whole economic and legislative system around the concept of a permanent recession, which is what your worldview basically is. You plan around fostering growth and then build a welfare system for those in most need. You have it backwards.

*Over half of minimum wage workers are under age 25
*Two-thirds of minimum wage workers only work part-time
*Only 8 percent of minimum wage workers have a college degree
*Around one third lacks a high school degree
*About half of all minimum wage workers live in the South, a relatively more affordable place to live

Coming down with a crippling illness or being framed for a crime you didn't commit can certainty cause someone to not succeed. However most likely failure is due to idiotic decisions, lack of hard work, lack of ambition and shortsightedness.

If someone fails to achieve a middle class life style what percentage of the time is it primarily their own fault? I'd put the figure at around 95+% where would you?
