Thread: Remove Ability for Attachments?

    Default Remove Ability for Attachments?

Lolli is harassing me to remove the ability to make attachments in posts. I can't just go and do that on her demands alone, and she won't let up, so I'm making a poll. Majority wins, as usual.

We currently have the ability to do this. Should it be taken away?

  2. #2
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!

    Because it is stupid.

It would make more sense to be able to attach shit to PMs than to posts.

    Non comprendez.

    Attachments? Eh?

Just vote yes, Bukaroo. You'll be glad you did.

You can attach files to your post up to a certain size. The file will be hosted on the TWF forum, and anyone can click it to download it.

I voted No. Now Lolli and I can fight, and then make up.

    Two questions:

    1. Why should the functionality be removed? What harm is it doing?

    2. Why should the functionality not be removed? What might we use it for?
    The Rules
Copper- behave toward others to elicit treatment you would like (the manipulative rule)
Gold- treat others how you would like them to treat you (the self regard rule)
Platinum - treat others the way they would like to be treated (the PC rule)

Undecided. Whats the size limit and what problems may this cause in the future? Attachments may be useful to people who still, for some reason, won't or can't use things like imgur, photobucket, or whatever for hosting stuff...

I just don't see why I should have to click someone's attachment to see whatever image they think is so important that they have to share it, but are unwilling to take the time to upload to somewhere else. I mean, they have to upload it here, so what's the difference, really? If they upload it somewhere else they can easily insert it into their post.

If it worked in PMs, it could conceivably be useful, as Flixy pointed out to me the other day with a specific example. But, then again, that one specific example wouldn't come up to terribly often, and anyone who I would accept a document from has other ways of doing so.

In all fairness, the bandwith issue has nothing to do with it - Wraithykins says there is still heaps to spare. Maybe someday in the future it would be a problem, but not right now.

If it can be disabled for images, but left for nonimage files, that would be awesome. Attaching text files, for whatever reason that may come up, is a fuck ton easier with the attach file option.

    This is doable.

    I'd go for that too.

...do we need a sticky on how to use imgur/photobucket/whathaveyou/yourownftpspace?

Does anyone have any objections to this plan?

  15. #15

My objection is that I have to go through an enormous song and dance to get anything I want. And no one else does.

    This is unfair.

Hey now, I'm still waiting on my media subforum. I even figured after the hoopla of crap threads in the D&D someone would say to have all discussions there and repurpose the GC to be media centered.

You lost that vote, OG. And you did get the User CP thing.

  19. #19
That I did, even if the title of the page still says Settings

    Alright, that was damn fast.

    OG's cunning plan
I could have had class. I could have been a contender.
I could have been somebody. Instead of a bum
    Which is what I am

    I aim at the stars
    But sometimes I hit London

  23. #23
It seems pretty much decided, so I went ahead and implemented OG's plan now so I don't have to deal with it later. It's easy to reverse if people suddenly start objecting.

  24. #24
    Fine.

The vote for no attachments at all is still winning, anyway.

  25. #25
I'm not sure how many are actually voting for none at all rather than OG's plan. Besides, nobody has really objected to the no image idea yet, so it's the one that pleases the most people.

  26. #26
You can't change the rules, jackass.

  27. #27
I'm not changing the rules. The rule is, I implement whatever OG asks me to, and find reasons not to do what you ask me to. I've stuck to that pretty well, I think.

  28. #28
You were supposed to stop being mean to me for right now.

    You lied.

  29. #29
I'd vote No (to removing the ability), or Yes for images but no for everything else.

Although I suspect it will be rarely used, I've been on forums where it can be useful. EG sharing a document (Word/Excel/PDF etc) for some reason. If its useless, no-one will use it, so no need to remove it. But if its useful then why not have it?
