Steam invited me into the Big Picture Music Beta. Not the Family sharing like I've been hoping for, but small steps![]()

This hockey game is pretty wicked...
Finally found a way to use my tablet in school the way I wanted. The original problem:
a) Some joker obviously still lives in the 2000s and hasn't yet figured out that the HDMI connectors on our projectors are there for a reason. They still insist on looping through only the VGA connectors (when's the last time you saw a laptop with VGA output? Yeah...). Okay, can be solved by a HDMI to VGA adapter.
b) They also insisted on putting said VGA connector at the most asinine position possible - it's smack-dab in the middle between my lectern and a shelf, about 20 cm above my head on a railing. (They also thought it to be a good idea to put all connectors (gas, water, electricity onto this railing - might be good when it concerns pupils, but it's a headache for me). Which means that I have to look out if I want to use my transparent fume cupboard because the cable will be dangling right in my way.
So I took a long hard look at all kinds of wireless transmitters of video signals. They all fell short in one area or the other (I don't need to transmit videos/sound, by the way. That's something I can do "conventionally"). One solution was massively unstable. One didn't do VGA resolutions (1024x768). One was limited to certain applications. And so on and so forth.
Then I stumbled across this little bit of information:
VNC has a listening mode!
The traditional way of remote desktop is to connect to a remote client and then see what's on the remote client's screen. But what I wanted was that the client sees what I see.
Enter the Raspberry Pi. Install TightVNC client, put it in listening mode and correct resolution, WiFi-card and VGA adapter and presto: I can now initiate a connection from the TightVNC server on my tablet to the Pi's client. Wirelessly. And quite fast to boot.
Now I only need to configure the network correctly so that I don't have to connect my Pi to the local WLAN (finding the Pi's IP adress is a bit of a hassle). Only downside: Requires my tablet to have a 2nd WiFi usb adapter. I'll cope, I think. The nano adapters are quite small.
Bonus: I can get rid of this annoying electronic whiteboard's software and instead use my table to drive the display - the pencils this whiteboard provides are a bit too low resolution, but my tablet's pencil is just great. Which means I can use OneNote which has a much better workflow than this piece of crap software.

I was happy to find Girl Scout cookies on sale outside my local Rutter's (convenience/gas store). No sales pitch at my front door, no pressure, and no delays.![]()
So my wife's been looking for a job for a few months now and it's been kinda rough on her. Even though we've had a very pleasant time, she's just not made for being at home all day long. On top of that, there's all the usual stuff with increasingly low self-esteem, feelings of hopelessness and uselessness, uncertainty about the future and about whether or not she's chosen a profession she's good enough for etc etc. We aren't hurting for money but even so there's been the added pressure of not bringing in money, worrying about whether or not her unemployment is sabotaging our plans to get a new place... worst of all, she's been worrying about how this affects our plans to have kids in a couple of years (because we'd like to have steady jobs for a couple of years before that). She really hates the build-up to submitting an application or going to an interview so it's been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster in that respect too. The past few days she's been kinda down and worried and seeming really disappointed in herself and it turns out that it was because she'd mistakenly missed the final application date for a job she'd love (except for the commuting) that was basically a sure thing. I can only imagine how bad she felt :/
You might think this post belongs in the blog thread or in the relationship thread or in the depression thread... but the thing is, they called from the job she'd been hoping for the most and said they'd love to have her for at least 6 months with a good chance of staying on for the next couple of years, at a salary slightly lower than what she'd asked for but with a significant raise just a few months away! She's been floating around singing and beaming all day and
Best of all, they called from the other place just ten minutes later wondering why she hadn't applied and if she was going to apply because they can't hire her if she doesn't and they'd very much like toit was just a little extra validation but it went a very long way and they also let her know that she's welcome there in the future should she want to go back

We've celebrated with sushi, yakiniku, some umeshu, and now with the best flat-iron steak and the best red-wine sauce and the best rösti I've ever made. And wine and cava and soon guild wars! Skål!

It's def. one of the best value pieces, but it's also my favourite steak regardless of priceI hope not too many people and restaurants catch on and make the price skyrocket
Sneak it to the cash register like a ninja. I prep it in ziploc bags in a large beer-cooler full of hot water with an average temp of around 55 C for a couple of hours and then sear it on both sides a little while before serving.
Thank glod for these under-appreciated poorly-marketed cuts![]()

I found a used, possibly "better" top-load washing machine to replace my 12 yr old HE front-load appliance. First off, it has no digital components that are very expensive to repair/replace. It has manual features that lets me decide water temp, tub filling capacity, and agitation speed, with no "smart" defaults or overrides. Best of all, if I want to stop the process at any time....and add items....I won't have to wait for a computer to recalibrate, or drain all the tub water and begin again. (HE my foot.)
So? My washing machine is indeed smart and thus saves me money by not using more water or detergent than needed. I can also press a button and the machine then decides if the water level is okay so I can add more clothes.
It has several programs some of which allow me to wash clothes in the machine which are to be hand-washed.
I don't see the advantage which a dumb washing machine is supposed to give you.

I like the feature that lets you set a time when you want the program to be finished, so you can dump clothes in overnight and have it done by 9AM![]()
Keep on keepin' the beat alive!
My machine is also super-silent. My microwave is definitely louder.

But technology is bad! We should go back to the predictability of washing our clothes in the bathtub!

God this is so true.
Sometime last summerish my 10 or so year old washer (dumb, no fancy buttons to push) died. I didn't even buy the expensive HE model, but did choose one that chooses how much water to use based on the size of the load. And the thing is so quiet that I can't hear it running to know when they are actually done. It's amazing.
Also the whole saving water thing is nice, too.

My washing machine has a steam anti-crease program, close to no ironing needed
And you still use top-loaders over there? Same as in Australia. Front loaders are standard in Europe, at least in the places I know.

Mine is a top loader.
