Beautiful night. As usual, neither my phone nor instagram can't do it justice, but:

We took a walk through a patch of forest that was just so fucking beautiful with the sun shining in through the trees and lighting up one or two of them in like a magical way, but the phone of course couldn't handle that either

The ancient and stunningly beautiful town of Fenghuang in China, a UNESCO heritage site ...

Ravaged by storms and floods yesterday, displacing some 50,000 people ...

Its worthy of a chuckle until you realize the timings all wrong.

I thought it was the Germans who were supposed to be nitpicky about humor?

My mother found these day in an old box full of documents from her side of the family: a photograph of my grand-grandfather and great-grandmother just after they were married:

And the letter notifying the family of his death two years latter in the Battle of Arras:

The light that once I thought compassion still casting shadows in your action
The words you shared were cold transactions that bring me to curse what you've done
When you're up there absorbed in greatness with such success you've grown complacent
I hope you scorch your many faces when you fly too close to the sun

    What a lovely/sad find.

On a related note, has anyone ever used Ancestry.com? They seem to have troves of data behind their firewall. I could probably spend a few days tracking it all down for free, but it's convenient that they've done all the indexing and scanning.

Idiot makes some comment about a device on board a Qatar flight bound for Manchester today. RAF Typhoons scrambled to escort.

I like the juxtaposition of functional civilian transport next to the Typhoon, bristling with sleek weaponry and intent.

A couple of years ago I saw something like that flying low over here, not exactly sure what happened. I live close to Eindhoven airport, which is both civil and military (and the main logistics airport for the Dutch military), and considering I never read anything about jets being scrambled to intercept that day I always figured it'd be an escort (of either a dignitary or bodies being flown home or something, this is also the airport where the bodies from Ukraine landed). The visual is indeed.. well, fascinating in a way - the large civilian aircraft, and a small sleek fighter next to it that is so much more powerful.

The lower one is the view from the beach up to the top of the slope. Looks nice, right?

Only that the beach is called "Omaha Beach" and the slope is about 50 meters high and 300 meters long. Doesn't look like that in the movies...

Yeah, I looked at the Swedish original map, and with a little guessing (Swedish is a Germanic language after all) I can see that it is a translation. Northcastle is originally Norsborg, and would be in German "Nordburg".

I definitely suggest one avoid buying real estate in "Sandcastle". The construction quality is pure shite.
