Not sure why they're still calling this a Final Fantasy. Gameplay has been pretty much changed to that of a shooter.

Gameply looked more like something akin to Darksiders, Prince of Persia or the Batman: Arkham series to me.

I consider those shooters, but ok. Roleplaying dynamics seem to be almost entirely eliminated.

    Prince of Persia a shooter?

Granted, you can throw your secondary weapon at the enemy but still...

It's not a proper RPG if you don't have to draw your own maps on graph paper
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

Action yes, but not shooters. I like POP, Batman etc but hate shooters.

However Final Fantasy has always been turn-based choosing actions from a menu, not sure I like the idea of departing from that.

That's what I meant. It was bad enough when they stopped being turn-based. But this basically destroys the very point of Final Fantasy. It's never going to compete with Batman-type games. Now it's just destroying the niche that it dominated.

    It's not been turn-based since FF8.

The Active Time Battle system is not traditional turn based but is still sort-of related and choosing actions from a menu etc - you need to wait for your slots to fill its not just a case of quickly needing to mash keys. You have time to thing and time to choose your actions from a wide list, I hope this isn't getting away from that.

And? It's only "related" after all. I don't quite see why we have to cram everything into pre-existing categories. By that kind of logic there's only black and white for colours.

OK Mr Pedant. You knee what was meant, everyone else knew what was meant, but the wrong words were used. Sorry I couldn't recall the phrase ATB or other related acronyms of the top off my head.

How were they not turn-based? Especially 9 and 10?

They need to make another FF Tactics...

Yeah, that's in my top 3 games all time. Instead of a real sequel, we're getting a mobile phone spin-off...I'm going to be guess this will be even worse than the DS spin-off.

If the cool downs are long enough I think a game can retain it's turn based feel (without being actually turn based) and if it's like Kingdom Hearts which I really liked, then I think it'll still feel Final Fantasyish while being a bit more dynamic and faster paced.

I would consider all the games up to FF 10 turn based.

You can play Fire Emblem, or Legend of Dragoon. FF tactics was fun, I loved my dual wielding Ramza Excalibur in one hand, and Save the Queen in the other. Then there was a skill that let you block all physical attacks, even though it specifically said does not work on range it did, and had like 100% effect rate. Really annoyed me because I had bought Hamedo which was OP but never worked.

Fire Emblem was all right but it never captivated me like Tactics.

Also I think turn based RPGs have lost a lot of their appeal. Honestly I don't mind slower paced games as long as the interaction is meaningful. JRPGs are full of NON-meaningful interaction - ie Grind or repetitive battles. Doing something that is repetitive but requires twitch reflexes is more tolerable. Now give me an RPG where at least half of the battles are challenging... and I'm sold. But most have about 95% easy grind battles interspersed with SOME interesting boss battles that often end up being too easy or gimicky.

MMORPGs are a little better on the repetition because at least you have a chat room attached. (And they tend to have a lot of options).
