Our school system emailed an ebola plan.
instituting a procedure that any current or new student who has recently travelled from Ebola-affected West African countries, including Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, or other affected regions as identified, will not be enrolled or permitted to return to school without proper medical documentation approved by the Superintendent or his designee. The School District has been advised to take additional precautions with respect to persons who exhibit fever or other specific symptoms, and additionally meeting criteria relating to travel to affected areas or contact with persons who have travelled to affected areas in the relevant time window. We are very fortunate that each of our schools is staffed with at least one licensed nurse trained in the recognition of symptoms of communicable diseases and protocols for treatment.

What the fuck does that mean? Can they distinguish fevers, or nausea/vomiting as bacterial or viral, based on patient symptoms? And can one licensed school nurse be expected to "recognize" symptoms of Ebola when it looks like any other virus?
Well any vomiting or fever usually leads to a 24-hour period where they aren't allowed back in school (and yes, both of my children have totally gamed the vomiting rule more than once).
I think the letter is designed to make us parents feel comforted that our children are safe and protected - my problem is that it plays into the same fears that are leading to my facebook feed being full of people screeching that another Ebola patient was brought to Emory. I actually read someone freaking out that she was going to an entirely different hospital for an outpatient procedure yesterday, but this was somehow leading to her being exposed.

So, if we go through the three week incubation period and we find that a lot of people were infected by these traveling nurses...is it still crazy to start aggressively cordoning-off the global passenger air travel industry? Global air travel is nice, but surely the world can survive with some major restrictions on passenger travel.
Except Ebola isn't a serious threat. Unless the disease can be spread by something more than bodily fluid its not a big deal for first world countries. If we banned road travel for ONE day across the country we would save more lives than global air travel restrictions.

No, it's me reminding everyone that the US health system is predominantly for-profit, corporate driven, and controlled at state levels. We have variations (fragmentation) that doesn't exist in UK's NHS. Also that the CDC is not a regulatory agency --- it doesn't have any enforcement powers, and can only recommend guidelines for voluntary compliance.
Wrong. I'm simply commenting on the misinterpretations and distortions made by politicians, which are then exacerbated and disseminated by news media, and social media. My only "agenda" is reminding people of the facts....and pointing out the double standards (hypocrisy) at our political and legislative levels.
Furthermore....I'm lamenting the US tendency to downplay and de-fund Prevention as part of Disaster Planning, Emergency Management, or even national security and defense measures. We can't continue to be reactive, and only act when things rise to crisis level, and still be an "Exceptional Nation", let alone a Superpower.
We shouldn't accept a congress that takes 50 day "vacations" during times of crisis, either.

Look, if you expect the USA to have a coordinated plan to battle Ebola, then you should expect the US healthcare system, our regulatory agencies, and legislative funding to be on the same page. That's sounds a lot like the "national" system that many state politicians fight against.
A for-profit Texas hospital (part of a corporate chain) thought they had it all figured out......until one patient sickened two nurses. Don't be confused by the Presbyterian part of their name--they were members of a hospital network, and could have used, even demanded, PPE from their sister hospitals.

Ebola is one of the most dangerous disease. Thereis no reason the world powers hadn't prepared for it. They just shy to admitthat they are preparing bio-war. They all had cure medicine developed. Thefollowing news proves it.

The drug,approved in China for emergency military use only, was initially developed byAMMS.
If itproves to be an effective cure it would be a big prize for China's medicalsector and a boost to China's soft power in Africa, an increasingly importantpartner for the world's second-biggest economy.
China's military has also given Sihuan thegreen-light to produce emergency supplies of the drug.
JK-05 hasnot been used on humans, although Sihuan says it has proven effective in testson mice.

Ebola has currently killed 2 people outside of West Africa. That's a pretty good reason why the world (i.e. the world outside of West Africa) isn't particularly prepared.

I think to qualify as very dangerous in the context Kats is using - dangerous to the general population -a disease has to not only be very lethal but also fairly easy to catch. The 1918 flu was very dangerous, but Ebola isn't. And not just because Ebola doesn't spread through the air, but also because infected people can only spread it when they are symptomatic, so you're not going to catch it from anyone that isn't obviously sick. I'd argue that third quality is what makes HIV a dangerous disease. It's harder to catch than Ebola, but people can spread it for a long time before they realize they have it.

I think ignorance is as much responsible for the Ebola deaths in Africa as Ebola itself.
It seems amazing that guy who brought it to Texas didn't infect anyone beyond the two nurses. He was walking around sick as can be but didn't manage to give it to anyone else, even the people he was living with. That says more about the danger of Ebola than the two nurses who did catch it from caring for him directly.
EDIT: I think statements like "the world isn't prepared for Ebola" send the wrong message about the disease. There are high risk segments of society - health care workers, as example, were demonstrably not prepared in Dallas and in Spain. But is the US prepared for Ebola? I'd argue aside from screening travelers from West Africa, training up certain hospital staff, and making sure the right protective equipment is available, there isn't much more the US should do to prepare. The danger of what's happening in West Africa occurring here is negligible.

Depends for whom. 70% mortality for pregnant women. 5-10% mortality rate for 16-30-year-olds. 5% of all Indians and 15% of people from some Pacific Islands killed.
That's because Ebola is hard to spread. The person must be symptomatic and others must come in direct contact with their bodily fluids. It's not enough to sit next to someone with Ebola symptoms. It's not enough even if they cough/sneeze on you. Don't touch their barf, blood, or urine, and you have virtually no chance of getting infected. Needless to say, you shouldn't be touching those bodily fluids anyway.

There's a higher percentage of infection and death in west Africa....directly due to their poor infrastructure, a collapsed healthcare system, and cultural rituals (like families washing/preparing dead bodies). Take mistrust of their government officials (after decades of civil wars), add the quarantine tents manned by people in 'space-suits', plus any ignorance or misinformation about transmitting disease by the populace -- and that's why Ebola became more dangerous this time around.
Public Health and Public Policy are inextricably linked. (That's a fact and not "my" agenda.) In the west it's more important who makes the policies -- medical experts and epidemiologists or politicians? And whether it's based on facts or fears.
It's amazing to me how poorly informed the US populace is, and/or how the media has made people feel more afraid than protected and safe.
IMO, if the media had highlighted how many westerners were NOT infected, or at any risk by the few who actually DID have Ebola, we'd be in a better place. It doesn't help when an "abundance of caution" means closing bowling alleys or bridal shops, hazmat teams are filmed "decontaminating" apartments, let alone mayors and governors (!) making whacky quarantine policies that get court challenges.
To be fair, it's not known exactly how any doctors or nurses were contaminated...or at what point the protocol failed vs when human mistakes were made.

All/any hospitals caring for Ebola patients should know how to decontaminate/sterilize their machinery or equipment, just like they would for any other blood-related disease (like hepatitis or HIV). Yeah, that's either a scam or bad journalism.
