A home intruder who was shot in the act by an apartment dweller in Highland was sentenced on Friday to serve 12 years in prison.

Joshua Jewell, 34, of Troy pleaded guilty in September to home invasion, a felony punishable by six to 30 years in prison. On Friday, Madison County Circuit Judge Kyle Napp sentenced him to 12 years.

In February, Jewell forced his way into the Highland apartment of sisters Debi Keeney and Donna Carlyle and attacked them, demanding money. According to the women’s statements at the time, Jewell was choking Carlyle when Keeney shot him twice with a small-caliber, derringer-style revolver.

His trial was about to begin in September when he decided to plead guilty. In return for the plea, the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office had agreed not to ask for more than 19 years in prison.
