A decent college has a job open for which I'd be pretty qualified, but it also has a school of osteopathy. Kind of hard to take a college that shells out money for such a school seriously.

God damn hairdressers. For the third time (in 7 days) we're without any on the set because they cancel at the last fucking minute. And were the most annoying to get in the first place. Out of the ten or so we did use, there was one (!) good one, but she unfortunately has very real health issues and can't come tomorrow (but did come today, in spite of feeling shitty already). Thank god makeup dept is covering. And any other dpt if someone cancels they help get a replacement (boom operator was sick but fixed a replacement before even calling in sick).
And then one that did show up was rude as hell to the extras and acted like a diva. We really need to somehow find hairdressers that can actually work on folm sets some day...

So, grandma has pneumonia. As she's 95, there's a real chance she might not make it - blood oxygen is only at 70%, even with an oxygen feed.
I hope that this March doesn't turn out to be a really shitty one.

My room at work is close to a stairways which also happens to be the emergency exit for this building. Today they are testing a system that's supposed to prevent smoke from getting in. That means there's a hurricane strength wind blowing trough it that makes it a bit difficult to open the doors and which = without any exception = results in the door being slammed shut with a loud bang every time it has been open. As the staircase ALSO is kind of an internal connection (one where you don't need to swipe an ID in order to move between floors in use by one dept) that means I've been working here with that door banging shut every few minutes.

So recently a judge struck down a law that made telecom and Internet providers keep data of their customers (and the asshole justice minister had to resign for something unrelated, yay). So now the new minister proposes quickly passing a new law to continue the data collecting. During a debate, several MPs asked for numbers about how useful and effective the measure has been so far, which seems like a perfectly fair question that should be asked. The proposing party in response calls it 'number fetisjism' and says "who is the suspect here? The DA office and police, or criminals and child rapists?"

It's messed up that I can't say RIP to old people who've lived really long lives....but their living descendants are more concerned about their own pain?
Since death is inevitable, it's hard to muster any special "sympathy" when an elder dies. The most we can hope for is to die with some family at the bedside, peacefully, and without pain or struggle. Not every family member has to put their lives on hold....waiting for the inevitable.
So yeah, I'm sorry that the Ginger's grandma died while you were on vacation, but her death sounded peaceful. If you'd planned your lives around grandparents, you'd have been married years earlier, and probably to other people.

Last night I was sitting in the kitchen on the top floor of my house in Istanbul. At some point I suddenly hear the noise of a handgun being fired, 5 or 6 shots in a row. Usually that means some idiot has gotten it in his mind to fire into the air. These people somehow don't get that even by shooting into the air you can kill people, as is shown by the frequent fatalities at Turkish wedding parties. After the shots I hear a sound as if something is crumbling or breaking off. I think they may have hit the roof overhanging the balcony. After checking that there is no more risk that the same idiot has reloaded to underline his feeble masculinity a bit more I go out onto the balcony and check for any signs of damage but can't find anything. Thinking I must have been hearing things I go to bed.
However, this morning when I woke up I noticed that the outer glass of a double glass window actually was hit and that a big portion of the window has been pulverized. Somehow nothing happened to the inner glass plate, but it seems like this little moment of joy for one of the neighbourhood dimwits is going to cost me big money for a new window. Which will have to be put in from the outside about 12 meters above street level. Meaning that most likely scaffolding will have to be placed before they can fix the window itself.

5 hours of fucking around trying to get everything to work only to find that the master-file for the data is v different from the case-report form used, so I have nfi what to do. This is not how I wanted to spend my day after being on call. Throughout this project I've been expected to just "go through stuff and fill it in" without being given context, details or updates, and on several occasions it's led to a lot of extra work at extremely inconvenient times. I enjoy research and staying late to work even on tedious things but it's def. a lot more fun when I feel like it's a little bit my project and I know what's going on. This crap is not nearly as rewarding, it just feels like I've been shanghaied into doing someone else's work and extremely poorly at that. V. disenchanted atm. beautiful day wasted, post-call hangover epic, too much coffee. a poop on all their houses!!

Pollen. I was never 'sensitive' to tree pollens, and had no allergies during my mid-western childhood in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, but I've had problems since living in Penn's Woods (PA). I've noticed an increase in tree pollen debris over the years, especially from oaks and maples, which means sweeping and washing down that fine green/yellow film that covers every surface, every single day.
Even when it's too early to turn on the A/C for temperature or humidity, it can be best to close all the windows to keep the pollen out! One day of open windows means everything in the house is dusted with green/yellow pollen....achoo, what price should we rationally, reasonably expect to pay?
