Let me know when you do. There are some pretty good mods out there you'll need to include.

Installing this very moment. But I think I will at least try one city standard.

Pillars of Eternity. It's pretty buggy right now, but it's otherwise a great game.

You sure like your isometric dungeon-crawlers ...

I have enjoyed all two of them from the last five years!

For a change (not) I'm back on Crusader Kings 2. The Charlemagne update last year added tribal mechanics which I find quite fun. Provides a different spin on the early game and the conversion from tribal to developed (I went Republic rather than Feudal) is challenging as you lose your tribal troops when you convert and become the holder of very weak lands with the potential to grow. Provides an interesting period of consolidation rather than endless growth.

Also quite like the Way of Life update which allows you to change your focus every five years giving a bonus to stats and sometimes new actions. My favourite that I only switch to when its convenient is Intrigue that gives an ability to spy on people, which I like to use to spy on a particularly troublesome vassal in order to find a legitimate excuse to imprison them - or slander them.

What I find annoying is that if you start in the earlier time periods, the map never ends up looking it does if you start in later period.

I'm not too bothered about that, the whole purpose of starting is surely to change history, not witness it?

Yeah, but you don't get to see most countries be created. Or if some Empire forms, it almost never goes away. I expect to change history in my corner of the map, but I want to see some level of realism elsewhere.

Yeah the new tribal mechanics work well for breaking down kingdoms/empires but for traditional feudal kingdoms/empires the odds of them ever disappearing are slim to nil. That's a shame.

Perhaps CK2 should go the direction of Victoria and EUIV and have country-specific events that lead in that direction.

Haven't played those, but does that work well? I mean while, say, an empire isn't likely to disappear, ending up with entirely different emperors is very likely. And vassals too. And the borders. Wouldn't that influence a lot of the country specific events? I'm curious how well their approach works.

Borders in those 2 games are much more stable. And a lot of the rulers are pre-set. I guess that part can't be copied in CK2. Either way, it's not unreasonable to think that any emperor that unifies Germany, for instance, would face certain problems.

The way it tends to work is that once a country is created it can have a civil war but most civil wars end up changing the leader at the top, not breaking up the kingdom, so at the end of it you've got the same nation as before (just with a new or the original ruler reconfirmed). As an outsider a civil war is a great but risky opportunity to take some land as eg if you declare war against the rebels you need to defeat the rebels before their lord does, rather than defeat the original lord. But your war can be for nought as if the civil war ends then your war will end inconclusively too. Otherwise there's an independence war that can be fought cutting a nation or empire back towards its original size but destroying a title is almost impossible.

I find certain nations can be very unstable. In the vanilla 1066 scenario England can be unstable for a very long time, while in the new 769 scenario the Carolingian nations tend to break apart in my experience.

Loki - I'm not a big fan of pre-scripted events and I thought EU had moved away from that in its new iterations? I've not played EUIV anywhere near as much, but I thought it was more adaptive than say EUII which was very pre-scripted.

I've never managed to actually get into a paradox game. What do you, you know, do?
The light that once I thought compassion still casting shadows in your action
The words you shared were cold transactions that bring me to curse what you've done
When you're up there absorbed in greatness with such success you've grown complacent

Never having played HOI (WWII simulation) I think of the other Paradox titles Crusader Kings is probably the easiest to get into. Victoria is a bit specialist and requires quite a bit of patience/learning curve, Europa Universalis is tougher to manage with Aggressive Expansion and harder-to-get Casus Belli requirements. CKII its quite easy to get a CB (especially with Old Gods expansion as the Norse) and you can just conquer the world if you want.

Just got my first game this year (trying this odd idea of playing the games I have rather than buying more I don't have time to play) - Dragon Age: Inquisition

I was close to buying that game on half a dozen occasions, but each time I come across some review that blasts some major element of gameplay...

Haven't tried it yet, TV is far more likely to have Disney Jr than PS4 on nowadays

Will try to remember to post what I think once I've got far enough to judge an opinion.

Well, what I figured out: If you want to beat all the dragons, be prepared to switch out members of your party and have weaponry which targets the specific vulnerabilities. Without doing so, the later dragons are practically unbeatable. They're also optional, though.

The main problem I read about is that tactical AI is absolutely awful, especially on higher difficulty levels.

Well, with the dragons you have to micro-manage quite a bit, even on normal. The guys always seem hellbent on standing either in front or directly behind a dragon.

They also apparently use their abilities on the wrong characters (whether friend or foe) and there's no way around that unlike in previous Dragon Age games.

Some of that they fixed - they don't dispel everything now

Onlive is shutting down at the end of the month. Sony bought the service for the patents. So I started going through my collection on there of whatever games I got freely that I don't have on other services. Started with Dear Esther.

Ignoring the fact that it was incredibly stupid to think it was a good idea to stream a compressed version of a very visual game like Dear Esther on a service like Onlive... game is strange, dark and depressing. Calling it a game might be a little to kind too...

There is no perfect game but I sunk in 50+ hours and have no regrets.

Is Tropico 5 any good? I enjoyed 4, and 5 is on sale on humble bundle for a few more hours.

No idea yet, but I'd expect so. 1-4 were all good, I'm getting 5 from Amanda at the end of the month but on PS4 which will be the first time I've had it on console rather than PC. So I can't give feedback yet sorry, but if you like the genre/series then I'd hope its good, not been disappointed by any of the series yet.

I'd like to see Tropico 2 (Pirate Cove) remade. That was a very fun game.
