This story really amuses me.

Hopefully this will be a cautionary tale to all would be criminals, even petty theft is theft.
Petty theft is theft, but it's not a felony. Stop pretending to be GGT and ignorantly claiming technical words aren't technical. "Felony robbery" is like "felony murder," neither indicates the modified word is why the actions constitute a felony. In this case it's because of the violence, the "striking" the manager trying to stop him from leaving twice.

yes, and robberies are almost always classed as felonies because of it. If the dude had simply ran away without going straight to his car this likely wouldn't have been reported to the police. But now, I wouldn't surprised if the idiot manager also gets fired. Putting yourself in harms way over a few cents of sugar syrup is straight dumb. No company would want to pay comp over that.
I'd love to see footage of this, I'm betting the "getting hit twice with the car" was simply this dude trying to back out of a spot and the manager being an idiot and standing behind the car.

He should get a warning and training but shouldn't get fired. You seem quite often keen on getting people fired, it's a rather sad trait.
Not keen on it at all, only following the trend for high profile incidents. This guy is a manager at a McDs, one of the few things that sets him apart from the rest of the staff would be the training on how to deal with trouble customers. If he is unable to keep a cool head in a situation involving a soda, then that franchise owner would have no trouble finding someone who would. Reading up on this, the manager tried to remove the keys from the ignition of the car (after he was backed into). He escalated this event far beyond what it needed to be. Thats not training, thats the lack of common fucking sense. Insurance, regionals, corporate, they are all going to to come down on him like a ton of bricks. He sure wouldn't be the first one fired from a McDonalds for escalating a minor incident.
To quote the police department who made the arrest concerning the employee:
"We never encourage anyone to put themselves in harm's way"
I apologize if my acceptance of reality is upsetting to one like yourself, it would not be surprising.

And I bet you don't want harsh penalties for theft and robbery either? And I also bet you absolutely detest anyone doing anything to stop crime that isn't part of the local, state or national government. In short - you want people to be decedent on the government and when people do act to protect themselves, their employer or others you lash out and wish for bad things to happen to them. RB is right, it is sad.

I think what he was trying to say is that it's really fucking dumb to escalate a situation such as this unnecessarily. Law enforcement in the US is also known for being really fucking dumb in this particular sense.

The simple fact is the liberal wing of this board HATES it when people defend property, they would rather see the thief get away with it then for a property owner to defend himself or his property (or his neighbors property). Don't steal. Ahhh problem solved. This for example was for a soda which is actually detrimental to health so no 'he was stealing bread for his family' hogwash. Gray absolutely exists but there is very little gray when it comes to people stealing. They are the parasites of society.
No I'm not. The damages claim from even a minor man vs car injury is going to be equivalent of at least a few hundred sodas, easily a few thousand sodas. A manager would have to successfully engage in that many man vs car confrontations (success being defined as getting the soda returned or paid for without suffering any kind of injury leading to a workman's comp claim, time lost from regular duties, etc.) for it to be a break-even proposition. And that's not a ratio you're going to find in man vs car. Your employer doesn't want to cover claims that can be avoided, because that hurts ITS bottom line so as part of getting workers' insurance it requires things like training on exactly these topics, what measures are worthwhile in loss-prevention and what degree of risk is not worth it. And if training isn't followed, that's grounds to deny the claim (yay for the carrier's bottom line) which puts the restaraunt fully on the hook for it (boo for its bottom line). You insist businesses should not be held to morality positions when it hurts their bottom line without good reason: well this is one example of that. Following your desires for an ideal society would leave them worse off financially.

I'm supporting the idea that society is better off when criminals like the soda thief are behind bars. Do you honestly think this is the first time he stole something?
I'd actually be surprised if he had, sounds like typical adolescent rules-testing egged on by a peer environment. Since I'm talking about bottom lines, how much money is it going to cost society to protect itself from the danger of a lost soda, in the form of legal proceedings and whatever sentencing is imposed? I wonder whether society might actually be better off with those additional thousands directed at something besides the defense of the soda supply?

One crime isn't the issue here. Just like MOST theft doesn't lead to arrests. When you can nab someone for it you want to maximize the sentence for all the times you didn't catch the thief in the act.
So if you can nab someone, you not only say we should presume him/her guilty of other crimes which we can't prove even happened, but of crimes which other people committed and weren't convicted of. Still not McDonald's responsibility to bear the expense for your blatantly immoral social engineering though.

Which is one reason why so many businesses have a very strict policy on theft. If you give the perps information to the police you can settle for X-times damages or a minimum of a few hundred bucks. But the moment it becomes physical its a felony charge and the courts are involved. WalMart very commonly settles petty thefts like this because its quicker, low key, and a crapload less expensive.

If McDonald's or the franchise owner viewed this as such a pressing issue, couldn't they take steps to better secure their soda fountain? It is not unheard of for fast food restaurants to have their soda fountain behind the counter and for the customer to have to ask for refills.
You know, I consider myself somebody in favor of harsh punishment to the point that I think at times that capital punishment isn't such a bad thing after all. And then you start posting with your totally of the chart idiocy about criminal 'justice'.

Do you follow training in every single action you take in every single day that you're at work while never making a mistake? Have you a lot of "fight or flight" experience that being a victim of a robbery gives you?
Most companies, at least here, have a disciplinary procedure that don't result in "one mistake = YOU'RE FIRED!" I think you've been watching too much The Apprentice. My companies disciplinary procedure is: verbal warning (expires after 3 months), first written warning (expires after 6 months), final written warning (expires after a year), dismissal. So it takes four disciplinary mistakes in relatively quick succession to get dismissed. Only Gross Misconduct, which is something that results in a complete breakdown of trust [ie theft] leads to instant dismissal.
Good employees are valuable. Before you make someone a manager you must surely think they are a good employee and to dismiss someone for every single mistake is the realms of the Twitter Mob, it is not sensible business practice.
I never said that the guy did the right thing so your Police quote makes no difference to my suggestion that he should get an official warning rather than dismissed. If he'd done the right thing there'd be nothing to get a warning over.
If your fight or flight mode kicks in when someone takes a free refill he shouldn't, maybe managing a fastfood restaurant isn't the best place for you. Gotta have a bit thicker skin than that.
