If that's your argument, you have no argument.
What a rubbish argument. Carl Sagan had something to say in the matter of this particular brainfart:

The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

Did he who made the lamb make thee?

Your reading comprehension isn't very good is It? That would be relevant if and only if I had suggested he was a genius because he was laughed at.

Instead I said to not discount him just because he was laughed at, and instead to play the ball rather than the man. As you should with Galileo and indeed Columbus, Filton, the Wright brothers and Bozo the Clown.

Good grief. Your reading comprehension is really rubbish, ain't it? You did not understand a word of what Sagan had to say on this matter. Not. A. Word.

Comparing this moron to Galileo is an insult to Galileo.

Galileo to science debates is same as Hitler to politics ones. It suggests a profound lack of knowledge and imagination.

There's also this weird cognitive dissonance going on in this brain of his:

not discount him just because he was laughed at, and instead to play the ball rather than the man
He makes it sound like they discredited his character first and then discounted completely what he said because of it. Rather than the more obvious possibility: Speak like an idiot, get treated like one.

He didn't. He compared you to an ignorant guy laughing at Gallileo. There's a difference.

Anyone comparing Bolton to Galileo is closer to Bozo the Clown.

I sense someone else also failing in the reading comprehension department. Probably an epidemic. Maybe someone has gone ... fuzzy ... in important parts of the brain?

As Fuzzy said, I didn't. Fuzzy understood it, want me to walk through the steps? Or even better, want to start playing the ball or is that too demeaning?

Dude, your Galileo argument doesn't get better the longer you try to defend it in vain.

And, please, now you even try the even more moronic: "But I didn't compare him to Galileo! I merely mentioned Galileo!"

Not vain. It is perfectly valid to say that simply because somebody was laughed by his peers is not by itself sufficient to join in with the laughter.

Which is exactly the argument of Sagan, merely in reverse. Which you told me was not applicable.

Tell me: Does it hurt you when you try to think?

I think for the geopolitical impact of Brexit to become clear you first have to have a Britain which (like pretty much all EU states) has come to terms of its insignificance.
    Congratulations America

When does the EU come to terms with its insignificance?

No there is a difference between calling everyone who is laughed at a genius (eg Bozo the Clown), or joining in blindly in laughing at others (eg Wright Brothers).

The alternative is to treat people as scientifically and as onjectively as possible and to then laugh at those who deserve it (eg Bozo) and not just ignorantly mock everyone blindly.

Brexit destroyed any hope for an arrangement with Switzerland on free movement. The EU isn't even willing to talk any longer.

We didn't mock "everyone blindly". We mocked one specific person for a specific reason.

There was a some hope, not much but some. Now the line is dead. Switzerland must consider an in out referendum for the bilateral. That could overrule the previous vote without being a rerun.
    Congratulations America

That he's completely ignorant of virtually everything known to practitioners and researchers of diplomacy, particularly as it relates to international organizations...This is the kind of person who reads nothing during an entire semester, writes a whole bunch of bullshit on the final exam, and then whines when he doesn't get an A. Which is to say, he's precisely the kind of person the Leave supporters would look up to.

This is the stupidest argument I've seen in my life.

Are any of you actually reading what you've written?

  27. #147
Believe it or not, but dismissing an argument by someone who's utterly unqualified to talk about that topic is a valid form of argumentation. I realize we now live in a post-factual world where an uneducated idiot's opinion on a topic is worth more than an expert's (as long as one agrees with the idiot), but that doesn't mean the rest of us should accept these new "standards"

And even if he's an expert, it should be considered what he's actually an expert in.

I myself was witness to a professor in theoretical physics (not the easiest part of physics) making himself demonstrably look like an utter moron when talking about climate change. The paper he wrote on that subject was absolutely idiotic.

That's a good point. We had one of those physicists in Illinois. He was obsessed with debunking evolution. Though in this case, Bolton isn't an expert in anything...other than sucking up to Bushes I suppose.

The problem is that sometimes an idiot will express an opinion that may be held by some experts, or that may as well have been said by eg. a member of the forum who doesn't have a bad reputation in the international poli-sci community. I don't think we can get around the necessity of addressing opinions and arguments on their own. That necessity remains even after we've dealt with a problematic or down-right fallacious appeal to authority.

If RB had said the same things Bolton the Clown said, in a post of his own, as if they were his own thoughts, we'd have had to respond to those arguments.

RB, if you want a response to the things Bolton said perhaps you can write a brief post explaining which of Bolton's arguments you agree with and which--if any--you disagree with.
