You think Michael Phelps (the Olympic swimmer) should be 'removed from society' because he had 2 DUI's?![]()
Look, nobody wants unsafe drivers on the road, whether that means texting-while-driving or aggressive drivers or impaired drivers, and repeat offenders are especially dangerous because they don't seem to learn from their mistakes (or punishment) the first time....but just "locking them up" won't solve much.
Besides, impairment is a spectrum, from mildly sleepy to accidentally over-medicated to falling down drunk -- which gives courts/judges leeway in sentencing. If you *really* cared to prevent drunk driving, you'd support funding for public transportation (buses that continue to run after the bars close) and/or free parking spots around sports arenas or popular bars (giving the drinkers a monetary incentive to leave their car parked). The Designated Driver is a good idea in theory, but doesn't work so well in reality.
Even better would be public funding for addiction/recovery programs, and half-way houses or work programs, and Social Workers or Probation Officers....so when judges mandate comprehensive treatment plans instead of jail-time, it can actually mean something constructive. IMO it's stupid, and even delusional, to think that funneling public funds to prisons (especially for-profit and privately operated) will solve the problem of drunk driving. It's not like our 'correctional institutions' are doing any correcting, or rehabilitation of its prisoners.![]()
