Then again, our tax agency has for more than a decade used easy to fill out applications to send in your tax returns and pre full everything they already know, so you can hand it in usually in like 5 minutes. Just saying, but government run agencies can be customer friendly.

As a consumer I like the pre-work the tax-office does. But I think it's only fair to say that it works so well is that the system needed to make it possible is nothing less than draconian.

PS, here's something else you may find hard to believe, Rand. When we go to the DMV to get a driver's license, or an ID photo card, they don't accept cash or debit/credit cards. Only personal checks or cashier/bank checks (for the exact amount) are accepted.

This varies greatly from state to state. In many states the DMV does accept cash, most debit cards and cheques etc. In some places they also accept some credit cards.

Just goes to show how pathetic government run agencies can be. No private company would get away with that. Privatise the DMV and they'd sort out the ability to accept cash or cards PDQ. Good argument to not have government except where you need it.

Though I find it odd you go to the DMV at all. We sort ours out online with payment done by card and a one day turnaround when I did it last.

I do hope you know better than to believe something just because GGT said it to you. The Pennsylvania DMV does accept credit for online transactions (in fact they'll only accept credit or debit for online transactions which is mostly normal). It's possible they don't accept credit from walk-ins (I couidn't find anything either way), they'd need a credit-reader at most stations for that, but they will accept cash along with checks if you're physically at the office. I would be surprised if they accepted cash by mail though.
