Thread: Gawd helps those...

    Default Gawd helps those...

In the past couple of days the local news has made quite a bit out of charity.

    But while thi:s

This year, the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination falls on the same day as Easter. And to commemorate it, the King family is partnering with a non-profit called Samaritan's Feet to deliver an Easter message unlike any before - on Barefoot Sunday.

"Every time I came around to this period of time, I miss him," said Dr. King's daughter, Bernice King.

A mere child when her father was killed, Bernice King has come to understand his eloquent message of love for humanity. So it wasn't a stretch when she heard the idea of pastors preaching in their bare feet.

"After we were introduced to the project, I had already scheduled to go through my closet," she said.

Now, nearly 5,000 pastors will be preaching their Easter sermons with no shoes -- drawing attention to the estimated 300 million children around the world who don't have shoes.

"We take these things for granted," she said.

Why not just ask people to donate shoes or money?

"It's the identification," Bernice said. "It's helping those without know there are those who identify with them."

Dr. King talked about rising above our individual concerns - and Bernice says she believes this is a perfect fit with her father's message.

"Our father was really focused on the issue of poverty," she said. "Right before he was assassinated he was preparing for the Poor People's Campaign to bring attention to the plight of the poor."

Impacting the impoverished in a meaningful way, people in the pews will be asked to make a $10 donation that'll go towards buying, sorting and shipping shoes.

"The goal is to raise at least a million pair," she said.

But that is just part one of a two-part plan. The shoes collected will be distributed in the week leading up to the King Holiday next January.

"When the children come to those different church grounds their feet will be washed," Bernice said. "It's an act of humility and service."

Humility and service, from start to finish.

Bernice King says her father was about more than marches and rallies. She said he wanted people to serve and love each other. That will be lived out on Barefoot Sunday -- on the rare occasion when the anniversary of Dr. King's death and the resurrection celebration of Easter just happen to fall on the same day.
strikes me as a genuine message, the fact that they are planning to wait nearly a year to distribute the shoes they collect makes me think that it is more about getting attention than anything else.

    Then there is this
Kevin Salwen and his daughter Hannah were stopped at a traffic light on the Buford Highway Connector in Atlanta in 2006 when something Hannah saw changed the direction of their lives.

"There was a man off to the side with a sign, something you see all the time. It said Hungry, Homeless please help," Kevin Salwen said. "Hannah looked to the other side and saw a man driving a beautiful Mercedes coupe. She said 'Dad, if that man were not driving such a nice car, that other man could have a meal,'" Salwen recounted.

The Salwens were already involved in many charitable causes in Atlanta, but after several family conferences they made the decision to downsize so they could help others even more.

The family of four sold their 6500 square foot house in Ansley Park and moved to a nearby one half the size. They put half of the money left over toward helping the hungry. "We decided in our case we wanted to help in Africa, and we contribute to an organization called the Hunger Project. We help between 30 and 40 villages, said Salwen.

The family also volunteers in Atlanta for Habitat for Humanity, an area homeless shelter and other causes. They say their smaller lifestyle has resulted in a big payoff. "We got out in the world to do a little bit of good and it did amazing things for our family relationships," said Salwen. He said the family has become closer, spends more time together and communicates more since they downsized.

Hannah and her Dad have written a book about their journey titled The Power of Half. They have some advice for those who are caught up in spending, acquiring and buying. "Sometimes you need to just step back and say 'I have too much.' It's about stopping the momentum," said Hannah, 17.

"The average family spends over 50 thousand dollars a year just on spending. From a spending perspective we could all just spend less and make our communities stronger," said Kevin Salwen.

Charitable giving may be the furthest thing from the minds of families who are struggling or unemployed. Salwen suggests those who are having trouble making ends meet try to cut spending in smaller categories by half: take half the vacation time as last year, drink half the coffee they would normally drink or eat frozen pizza instead of take out.

The Salwens' book, The Power of Half is available in area bookstores or on Amazon.
Once again, I believe the sentiment is genuine, but the fact that they released a book makes me think they are looking for fame. It's not like they downgraded themselves to a particularly uncomfortable way of living, but they still get lots of attention for it. There is really something to be said for donating your time and/or money without looking for any recognition at all for it. It also strikes me as funny that the daughter was upset by seeing the homeless in her own area, so they choose to help the starving in Africa. Yes, it's a real problem, and the money is surely needed, but it really does seem like a case of choosing the cause that will get them the most attention.
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

The Power of Half is a story we heard years ago. Not sure where the proceeds go, but I hope it's mostly to charity. Unless they decided to buy or build another huge home with those profits, and sell it for profit, and send the proceeds to charity.

I think the reasons behind waiting a year to send donated shoes reflects shipping costs more than anything else. Bulk is cheaper, just like postal book rates. Also, the "attention" they get from media boosts donations while it reduces costs of shipping.

Charity is a wonderful thing. But "getting the word out" can be hard. Finding the money can be hard.

It's not "funny" that the girl noticed poor homeless Americans have more or better than starving people in Africa. If she wants "attention" I'd say it's more for global awareness, and that's not such a bad thing. No cause gets funding if it's invisible to the people with money.

Also, making the title as you did, on Good Friday, is just crass. If you want a bashing religion thread, then make one. But that is really below the belt for no good reason, Lolli.

Just because you can say it doesn't mean you should.

    What the fuck, Geegee?

You know what, forget it, I don't feel like playing your game. We get it, you're a victim.

And your fucking religion is useless. Do you get that, useless. Today is just another mother fucking day. There is no God, no jesus. No mother fucking holy resurrection. Your precious god is nothing but a myth, designed to make stupid people feel better about doing what they are told.

These "charitable" acts are nothing but attention whoring. If they actually just wanted to give, they would do it. You don't have to make an announcement about it to give to others.

God helps those who helps themselves is, after all, the attitude your precious religion embraces. Deal with it, bitch.

edit: You know about the power of half shit because I posted it when it first came up. But now they have a book! It's new news, see. Fucking attention whoring crap. Sell their fucking book.
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

Lolli, just because you don't believe the same way as GGT does is no reason to jump her shit like that! Here in America, we have the right to practice any religion we choose, or none at all if that's our choice. Religion bashing is just as bad as racism, worse in my opinion because of all the OMG he' practices the Islamic religion (or whatever religion) is a big part of the profiling that is going on in the world right now!
I don't have a problem with authority....I just don't like being told what to do!Remember, the toes you step on today may be attached to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow!RIP Fluffy! 01-07-09 I'm so sorry Fluffster! God has less to do with morality than peoples' decisions. Atheists and agnostics agree. If you really want to call these charities nothing more than attention whoring, then good for you?

People give all the time, most times they don't want or expect "attention". However, bringing attention to people in need does take time and talent, and yes, even MONEY.

You're the bitch here. You're the one who started the thread about Gawd, mocking God. You really could have separated out charity from religion, if you'd wanted to. But you didn't want to. You just wanted to say there is no God, no Jesus, no mother fucking resurrection. On Good Friday, a holy day for believers.

Your hatred for my beliefs matters, but only to me. Really, the rest is just semantics. Does this make you feel better? Is that what this is all about? You wanted to feel better about Easter but can't?

So because you believe, everyone else has to pretend to do the same? While a family uses "charity" to get even richer, and a well-known church uses it to garner attention?

I wanted to discuss hypocrisy, charities that are only out to benefit themselves. You wanted yet another opportunity to play the victim.
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

I do get irritated that often people give to charities because it is en vogue, forgetting that charity could begin in their own backyard. Unfortunately, you do have to check up on charities because often they have a high overhead, and the percentage going to the actual cause is smaller than you think. United Way comes to mind.

I have no problem with a person giving because it makes them feel better, or gives them a sense of purpose, but there definitely is a line between getting the word out and screaming "Look what I do for others!"

Shoe drives/coat drives/food drives are great things, but logistically you want to get as much donated as possible in a short amount of time to make it worthwhile. If the charity mentioned above collected all year, and then doled out the items monthly, then it would benefit people much quicker than waiting until January.

I'm glad the girl wanted to help people in Africa, but does she wonder of the fate of the man on the side of the road all of those years ago? And did she wonder if there are others like him in her town that could have benefitted from her help?

I'm not saying global charity is bad; I think it is a very good thing. And we have that right to choose what charities we want to help with (well, at least for now. Who knows what will be regulated in the future). But, often, good intentions are misplaced when people start thinking of ways to get the message out, and forget the message along the way.

My take on this is.....you are using inflammatory language to judge Christians. You don't believe a family would sell a home and downsize, giving the profits to charity. Especially not if the impetus came from a child. They could have been atheists or Buddhists, but to you they are just opportunists. But on Good Friday you start a thread about Gawd.

Whose hypocrisy did you want to discuss?

  13. #13
Your "Good Friday" is just April 2 to me. Why are you trying to force me into celebrating your religion?

And what I believe is that this family is expecting attention for doing this, both when they did it and now. I don't think a bit of altruism is unreasonable. There was no reason for them to make an announcement about it.

I'm not forcing you to do anything. But you chose a story from 2006 to be outraged, on Good Friday 2010.

You're being a hollow bitch and a hypocrite. Quite content to call others names, though. So fuck you very much.

  15. #15
Not to pick apart the article more, but how did Hannah know that the man in the Mercedes didn't run a charity himself? It's interesting how we judge people based on a fleeting moment, and our perceptions shape us. I mean, it's a good thing it got her thinking about giving to others, but its an unfair assessment that someone that has nice things wouldn't help others himself. Also, driving a Mercedes doesn't always mean you're rich, since I see alot of used ones driven by not so rich looking folks in my part of the world.

Anyway, there's my off topic rant of the night.

Right, since apparently you are too stupid to notice publication dates, this came up tonight because my local news thought it was newsworthy on April 2, 2010.

Please, though, continue to show us how victimized you White Anglo-Saxon Protestants are.

Apparently you can't actually defend the practice of attention-whoring charitable donations, so instead you'll discuss how horrible I am for daring to not be a fucking Christian like you.

uh huh, use the name calling tactic, that always works

If you'd read your local news, you'd have picked up on the story at least two years ago. Allowing a two year lag for media to pick it up as newsworthy.

When did I ever say WASPs are victims, or that I feel like a victim? I also never called you horrible for not being a Christian, just a hypocrite for making a thread about Gawd inspired charity, on Good Friday. You could have done this days or weeks ago, months ago, but noooo, a Christian holy day just made sense in your mind.

    Fuck you.

You call me a bitch and a hypocrite, and then want to call me on name calling?

You stupid fucking cunt - not only did I pick up on it from my local news when it first happened, I'm pretty sure I even posted it on ACC, or you wouldn't have even fucking known it was old news, what with it being nothing more than a local human interest story. The fact that they brought it out again was what I found amusing - because they were hawking a fucking book. Attention whoring.

Once again, you know the old phrase "God helps those who help themselves." That is what I think all this amounts to. And it came up today, because both of those stories were published today.

I am amused by how easily this forum's debates slide into name calling and profanity.

Really, how drunk are you both?
    I enjoy blank walls.

Good for you, you called me a stupid fucking cunt. Because I knew about the story in '06 or '07. Local news stories my ass. If they're hawking a book, then so what? Plenty of stories were published today. But I suppose you'd call Apple a stupid fucking cunt, too. Might make a hilarious joke about the iPad, but God wouldn't have a thing to do with it.

Fuck you Lolli. You wanted to make it sound like charities are bunk if they ask for money, or if they have a religious base. I aim to expose you as the clueless hypocrite who would throw the baby out with the bathwater. Because you are.

So, what do you guys think of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation? Is it just another philanthropic adventure to gain recognition and fame?
Faith is Hope (see Loki's sig for details)
If hindsight is 20-20, why is it so often ignored?

  22. #22
This reminds me of a recent experiment that showed that people who buy green products are 6 times more likely to steal.
Hope is the denial of reality

  23. #23
This reminds me of recent studies that show people are willing to believe poll numbers with small populations and questionable statistical methods.

  24. #24
That reminds me of people who dismiss credible results because they disagree with them while taking isolated examples as proof as long as they support their beliefs.
Hope is the denial of reality

  25. #25
Are you going to give us another Jonathan Swift quote taken out of context now, Loki?

  26. #26
The fact that your first response was "the study was wrong", not "let me see the study", speaks for itself.
Hope is the denial of reality

No idea what you are referring to. What "study" are you talking about here? You mentioned an experiment, people who buy green and steal. Didn't see "study" in there at all. Beyond that, I was just playing a semantic game with you. There aren't too many FACTS involved here.

Well isn't this just a lovely bundle of ignorance wrapped up in delusions.

Your right to practice whatever sky pixie nonsense you choose doesn't factor into anything about this thread; you can pretend to lick sky pixie toes all you want but that does not mean the rest of us cannot make fun of you for it. "Religion bashing" may hurt feelings, but that's just too damned bad. Awakening people from ignorance often does.

Now, how the Hell is "religion bashing", which I assume is loaded language for "criticism of religion" "just as bad" as racism? Are you cleverly arguing implicitly that one's religion is most likely inherited from the family home, rather than any sort of divine revelation? Or simply trying to evoke imagery of 'evil' because feelings have been hurt? Either way, criticizing religion is nowhere near racism for the simple reason that fawning over sky pixies is a choice, race isn't.

Lastly, "religion bashing" is one of the loftiest things one can do to occupy their time, seeing as how religion poisons everything. It is the most destructive and terrifying thing still widely accepted in Western culture. Religion is the anti-thesis of everything that has made our age a damn sight more livable than those before the age of industry. It is poison fed to the minds of innocent young children without their consent or sometimes even knowledge. And that's considered absolutely normal! Can you imagine, some parents actually think "teaching" their kids their own religion is the greatest part of their parenting.

    In 2010.

    That is sickening.

And if we have any hope of that ever changing, then I'm sorry but religion must be "bashed", ie. revealed as the bestial hodge-podge of illogical, wretched hate-speech meant to portray the basis of morality.

Should there ever be legislation "protecting" anyone from "religion bashing", well, that'd be a day civilization went down another peg.
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

No where did I see her trying to "force" you to do a damned thing except use a few manners! It's the same as me coming into your home and plopping down on the couch with my dirty shoes on the coffee table. FFS, have a little bit of respect for other people's beliefs and ideal. Just because you can be polite and show some respect doesn't mean you have to agree!

A great many charities are only out to benefit themselves. It's kinda like, "please donate to my favorite charity...ME". As the donor, one has to do research and see how the money is spent before donating. A person doesn't (usually) buy a car or a house without researching it thoroughly, so they shouldn't just assume that something that says "non-profit" or "charity" or whatever is always legitimate!

Oh yeah, where did GGT try to play the victim? All she did was say, "Also, making the title as you did, on Good Friday, is just crass. If you want a bashing religion thread, then make one. But that is really below the belt for no good reason, Lolli" She stated her opinion of your thread title, based on her beliefs. That's not playing the victim, that's stating an opinion!

I know you know this, but I am going to say it again. There are a great many atheists here. In fact, it's entirely possible that some didn't even realize the Christian religious connotations of today. Yes, it's possible Lolli was deliberately trying to provoke one of the Christian posters into a reaction, but in that case, not caving into the manipulation is the best way to thwart that effort.

One question? How the fuck are people supposed to let other people know they are trying to do something good, regardless of what form of charity it takes, if they don't publicize it? Or are other people who would like to help the less fortunate supposed to be mind-readers?

Today, you threw out names. First to the fund raisers and then to me. That raises ire and defensive speech, but you knew that. That's probably why you started the thread. You wanted people to criticize book hawking that you see as attention whoring. But instead of having a decent and civil conversation about when time and talent (or treasure) can be put to good use, or when it's simply capitalizing on emotions, you had it in your mind to lambast people of faith, on Good Friday. You went with the volatile and passionate emotions that you denounce. It's just okay for you to do it, but no one else.

So don't be surprised that your intentions were called into question, while you called philanthropist's motive into question. You can't have it both ways --- complaining that fund raisers appeal to emotions or beliefs. It works both ways. You can't label them as sleazy when you start a thread with a title meant to titillate or infuriate, but not inspire or engage. That's sleazy in itself. That's what makes you a hypocrite, while you bitch about others being hypocritical.
