Sky is crystal clear where I live, bright blue with the occasional fluffy white cloud. If I had no TV/radio/internet then I'd think it was none other than a lovely Spring day. You?

Who here can actually see problems where they are?

Unless we have anyone posting from Shetland, Orkney, or the northern reaches of Scotland, nobody will see any difference.

    For a while yet anyway.

In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.

Indeed... but I think we get to blame Nessie's people for not just sailing on by.

    Dumbass Scandihoovian colonists.

I think quite a few churches started preaching that after the quake in Haiti. At the least, it's got the fundies I know all talking about it being the apocalypse. I'm almost tempted to go buy a bunch of MREs and then sell them for 10x what I paid.

You may get your wish. I read a blurb that Munch's art piece "The Scream" may have been inspired by the colors in the sky, after a volcano. And that after previous volcanoes around the world, moon and sun get vivid colors, purple hazes.

Yes thank you that is what I meant which is why I posted it in a volcano eruption thread

I was guessing not everyone knew the reference, Nessie.

Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of wafer thin printed circuits that fill my complex. If the word hate was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant.

It didn't spew dangerous levels of ash for two years straight.
Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"

KLM has executed a test flight from Dusseldorf to Amsterdam, so far there doesn't really seem to have been a problem, they are going to inspect the plane very carefully. It seems like I caught the last flight out of Amsterdam to Istanbul. A friend of mine who would have come the next day has been re-booked 3 times so far and he's going to have to re-schedule again because the last flight he was booked on got cancelled as well.
    Congratulations America

There's some awesome images of lightning flashing around the eruption and lava flying etc on the BBC in an audio slideshow:

    Those lightning pictures are superb!

Is there any particular reason volcanic eruptions have more nearby lightning (temperature differentials? Sudden moisture changes?) or are these pictures coincidental.

Do you know how lightning works?

Perfectly clear blue skies here over the weekend, great weather too

A friend of mine was really fucked though. He's studying for movie directing and had arranged the entire week to shoot a short film. Main actor, actress, a load of models, locations (even arranged an entire train to shoot in),everything fixed, and then his lead actor got stuck in Moscow.

I thought it was a matter of some inclarity. I just didn't know volcanos could cause it like that.

  25. #55
There's always inclarities (the Devil) in details, but basically lightning's just an electrical arcing discharge through the atmosphere; the potential difference between the cloud and the ground is sufficient to ionize the air. I don't know for sure, either, but my guess would be that hot, small particles would greatly help vis a vis the free charge carrier situation, thus making the lightning's job that much easier.

Plus all the swirling ash and particles and shit flying up into the atmosphere must create a lot of static charge.

Latest Volcanic Ash related aircraft incidents ?

    By Miyuru ( K FLYER ) on April 21, 2010

Following incidents have been reported after the re-opening of UK airspace last night and are currently believed to have been caused by volcanic ash. But please note that these events are *still* under investigation.

A World Airways Boeing MD-11, operating for Allied Air, that flew from Benghazi, Libya to Ostend-Bruges, Belgium via Maastrichat ( on 20th ) was grounded due to ash found in engines. The engine reportedly suffered non-serious damage. The aircraft is currently being inspected.
The aircraft in question is N384WA. Allied Air is a Nigerian operator.

A Thomas Cook 757, reg G-JMCF, on a positioning flight as TCX952P, returned to Manchester due to a loss of compressor bleed air from one engine after crew sensed an ‘intense smell of volcanic ash’ during the climb between FL160-FL200. The aircraft was out over the North Sea off Nofolk/Suffolk.

The live ATC recording of the Thomas Cook incident could be found here .

The words you shared were cold transactions that bring me to curse what you've done
When you're up there absorbed in greatness with such success you've grown complacent
I hope you scorch your many faces when you fly too close to the sun

I'd heard some resumed air traffic before getting the OK from whoever regulates the skies. Not sure I'd board a plane under those circumstances.

Dound that, since the regulators of the skies are the one who control the ATC towers.
