I don't know whether it's Sapkowski's voice or the translator's, but The Witcher's effortlessly evocative storytelling has won me over completely. Peter Kenny's voice-acting for the audiobook is fantastic; I'm walking around town fully immersed in an incredible adventure. This is precisely the kind of book I was looking for—skillful, deceptively simple storytelling about a cool world, populated by well-realized characters. The prose is simple but elegant. The dialogue is intimate and engaging. The writing overall is more restrained than you might find in many other comparable works (eg. the Malazan novels, with Erikson's penchant for clumsy melodrama), but more varied than in eg. Mistborn or Gentleman Bastards. Compared to Rothfuss, this writer comes across as less of a tryhard (note: I've genuinely enjoyed all of the aforementioned books). There are some rough edges—and I'm only halfway through Blood of Elves—but, so far, this has been a wonderful experience. Feels like a refinement of—or a riff on—'80s & '90s-era fantasy.
I'm fairly new to audiobooks, and have turned to them because I'm walking around with the baby 3-4 hours a day r n to pass the time while she sleeps. I really loved radio plays when I was a kid; listening to this novel (and eavesdropping on my wife listening through WoT previously) brought back those memories. One weird thing is that my experience of the story—the thoughts, feelings and mental imagery—has automagically been combined with the phenomenology of roaming through unfamiliar areas, turning the audiobook into a multimodal piece of art. When I think back on events in the book that took place in a woodland area, I think of the forest I was walking through at the time; when I recall events that took place on a river, I think back on the river I was walking along. It's making everything come alive in a way I hadn't expected.
My wife listened through the Stormlight Archives and loved those productions. Turns out they're full cast audiobooks, and I can really see why the company describes its creations as movies in your mind. Still, Kenny is like a full cast in himself![]()
