On the serious side, is it bad if I don't know most of the movies you mentioned including the one lolli mentioned?

  3. #33
Which one I mentioned? The one the thread is about, or some other one?

Do you not go to movies, or just have radically different taste?

I don't think most people here would like most of the movies I have seen recently.

Ballad of a Soldier was fantastic. And L'amant was delicious.

Let's just say the last movie I was saw Avatar.

I guess a lot of stupid reasons prevent me from going to the movies. I could blame it on my parents and say, "they won't let me", but I'm 16. I have money, I have friends who can drive, in short, I can sneak out. There's no excuse unless you're financially disabled or just a downright outcast.

I personally believe it has to do more with me not having as much leisure time as I'd want/expect. It's actually sad, high school is supposed to be a memorable experience filled with experimentation and whatnot and here I am almost a senior having only kissed and dated one girl. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about my predicament, even if my parents pressured me into being a "geek", I believed that four years of diligence would pay off later in life. I chose to live this way.

In all honesty, I think my personal values (not those my parents forced upon me) and my (time) retrains cause me to have no clue what the fuck is going on half the time when pop-culture is being references to or discussed. :/

Maybe this will clear up as to why I'm such a retard half the time.

  5. #35
Well, it's good to have your own personal values, but probably not nearly as good to wall yourself off from what is going on around you.

You're going to find when you go to college that there are people who effortlessly achieved what you are having to work so hard for.

You really need to find a happy medium.

Been there, done that. A friend of mine is attending the prestigious University of Virginia and she's gets drunk every night, smokes weed every so often for the hell of it. She's a party girl and she did better than me while maintaining that lifestyle.

However, I do pride myself in being a fairly good pianist, being a starting players on a team ranked top 5 in VA, winning awards at MUN, competing and winning on the state level for science olympiad. And I have friends, true, I don't have 100000, but I have about ten or fifteen I stay close to.

Kill Bill's highly over rated. It's not bad or anything, it's just kinda... meh. Pulp Fiction and RD were much better.

^^I thought Kill Bill was meh too. Didn't see why it was so hyped.

    I really liked Kill Bill.

It didn't have the strong performances given in RD or PF, but I liked the choppng and changing styles, the multiple kung-fu references and kung-fuesque storyline, the tongue-in-cheek blood and gore.

All came together for a wonderful double-bill.

The score was beyond perfect, his movies have always had amazing soundtracks, but the nurse whistle (Twisted Nerve) at the beginning was the best. evar.

Well, that's why God invented alcohol, frat boys invented house parties, and chemistry geeks invented GHB for combined use with the previous two inventions.

Right... you put the GHB in *her* alcoholic beverage. (Or his - I promise I won't judge you based on the sex of the person you want to rape.)

It's kinda hard to give that date rape thing a go, when you're the one who's unconscious.

I love it when young people say they have never had a drink and never will.

You just wait for the crushing lonely bitterness of adulthood my boy.
"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink, because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl.

Hmmm. I haven't found adulthood to contain such crushing lonely bitterNess.
The teen years, on the otherhand...

Of course, looking at those lovely ladies would be enough to make any sensible young man drink to avoid such a fate.

You're close, I planned on fucking a chimp as soon as I turned 18. How did you know?

Really? If I said I was Muslim. Would that change anything?

Nope. Isnt alcohol the thing muslims lapse on most frequently?

Naw, I just tend to hate TV serials. TV sucks your life away, so I try to avoid getting hooked. My one exception in NBA playoffs (most def not regular season.)

So I've never watched Lost, just read commentaries about it. I also have an aversion to show producers trying ever more elaborate plot games to keep viewers interested. Since I've heard that lost has this in spades, I doubt I'd like the later seasons.
I did watch first two season of BSG, but only on DVD while recovering from my transplant.

Bah, elephant attack ain't gory at all. In fact, LotR is quite sanitized Hollywood violence. Now if Tarantino would take a lesson and meet in the middle ground between himself and LotR.... Most Tarantino is entirely gratuitous. Kill Bill was almost laughable, and I found it very weak. I did find Jackie Brown very good, but he couldn't help himself and had to have De Niro die an icky death.

Some advice - rely on suckers like lolli to recommend good TV shows/serials... and then get the DVDs at the end of each season. Way cheaper than movies on a $/entertained time metric.

Or become a techie and learn how to download the new stuff automatically each week. Probably a better idea for you to do the DVD thing.

I'm not breaking the quote up to answer one by one.

I watched the first 3 seasons of Lost all at once - all Nessie's fault. After that I was hooked. I don't know that the plot games have been growing more elaborate, they've always been there. There have been some less than stellar moments, but for the most part it has provided me with much more entertainment than necessary. That includes the entertainment of Wraithy's inability to stay out of the spoiler thread on a weekly basis.

I think Madeline Kahn was my first crush.

Yeah, History of the World Part 1 is what I watched - I love that bit. I do I do I do.

I forget why I was questioning your taste in this particular thread, though.

edit: Oh, and Cain, the majority of the shows I watch are recommended by Wraithy and Nessie. Neither of them have steered me wrong, yet.

Really? I don't think so. I guess I use religion as an excuse to not drink. I don't look too favorably upon drinking because of the shit I've seen at parties. It's more what I believe. Remember, I'm pretty much an in-the-closet atheist.

Yeah, i suppose there isnt such a thing as a muslim who isnt 100% compliant with their religious bullshit.
