Now, the one that bugged me was T2T. I've posted before on how it emphasized a theme of redemption for past mistakes *expressed through Theoden, Treebeard, Faramir, and Smeagol* and how Jackson dumped the theme EVERY SINGLE TIME. And then Phillipa Bowen, talking in the commentary on the power and corrupting influence of the Ring, demonstrated that she also completely missed Tolkein's optimistic note on the primacy of nobility of spirit over evil in how he wrote Faramir.
Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"

Except it wasn't botched badly. It won award after award. People loved the LOTR, it got people interested in fantasy settings. People shelled money to watch it at the theaters and then buy the DVD and extended DVD. LOTR was about as successful as you can possibly get for a movie adaptation of a book. What metric other then your own subjective tastes are you basin your opinion on the movies? So it didn't get every single theme right and they changed some minor details. Why does that bother you so much? No movie will ever 100% accurately portray a book.Well, The Lord of the Rings is pretty special, so its a tough pill to swallow when it gets botched so badly. I've enjoyed all the Harry Potter adaptations. But that might be because the books arn't exceptional. And why do you have to lead with calling me a baby? Is that a Right Wing thing? You can't disagree with someone without hurling an insult first?
Correction, Jackson changed a lot of pretty major details strictly to dumb the work down presumably because he thought ding dongs like you could enjoy it more and make sure it sold tons of DVDs and win awards. It's always sad to see that happen to literature, at least for the folks who really liked the literature version. Some pretty crappy movies have won best picture in the past and DVD sales has got to be the shittiest metric for indicating a quality film ever.

Speaking of the extended DVDs, I've got the 3 boxes (4 discs each), and Mr. Jackson is a hell of a smug asshole. He was always going on and on about how parts of the book didn't flow right or didn't make sense and how his interpretation was better for the franchise.
One of the hobbits, think it was Sam (could have been one of the non-ring bearers), brought up a few times how they didn't agree with how the scenes were transferred from book to film; he was a huge Tolkien fan. Peter changed a lot of the movie on the fly. At one point he had Aragorn's love interest fighing beside him at Helm's Deepbut only dropped that because something happened to the actress part way through the shooting. Thats why all the physic dream stuff are their own scenes, it was filmed way after the rest of the movie.
I have the boxed sets but I never bothered to watch all that extra crap. I just wanted the extended film version. Better for the franchise? It didn't become a franchise until he started making movies with the spinnoff games and so on. Right? So he meant, at least in part, better for him.

I made it one of those weekend things for me a few years ago, each set I think has 3 or 4 commentary tracks. Peter's is the worst, but the actors and CGI tracks are usually funny or full of TIL type stuff.
Eh, that's why books with so much detail to them are better to not be adapted to film, or maybe left to a mini series of sorts. Three movies, as godawful long as they were, can never pack as much information in without making theatre-goers crazy.
Actually, same goes with Harry Potter. A lot is missed in the movies; it may not be essential information, but makes more sense reading the books than the movies do. But, I'm not gonna sit through a 4 hour movie in the theatre just to get that extra scene thrown in.
Well the movies were great... but I do agree a mini-series or TV series is a better adaptation. That is one reason why I'm VERY happy about HBO picking up A Game of Thrones. That should be awesome.Eh, that's why books with so much detail to them are better to not be adapted to film, or maybe left to a mini series of sorts.
