UPDATE: So I had five drinks and little food, and decided I would surprise my mom with this tomorrow. So I went to the 24 hour Apple store on 59th and 5th at 10PM to get one. That place is a freakshow of people buying shit at 10PM. Like I almost was. Except they are flat out of the damn machines so now they lost my drunken business.

Yeah, it's sorta creepy. It was fracking *packed*. A lot of tourists, I guess to see the design of the place and such. It's become something of an attraction. But I don't think the people in there who had clearly been there for quite a while dicking around on the sample computers are under the illusions that they are cool.
You should check some of the photo collections of the 24 hour store. Crowd appearance completely changes from the smug hipsters to the poor and lonely; same people, just different outfits. You'll have people working on homework, surfing the web, or in the case of kat, posting insane rantings anywhere they aren't banned. UPDATE: Mentioned that I was going to surprise my mom with this to my sister, who thought it's a great idea and offered to split the cost of the 3G version. So just ordered it. Will be curious/hopeful that she enjoys it!

Basically, I think the iPad has some limitations and isn't especially useful. But the form factor, simplicity (and perhaps limitations) also makes it perfect for my mom. My family doesn't really give presents, but she has a big birthday coming up so I'm surprising her with one.
She'll probably love it, if you give it with a cool looking carry case and offer a tutorial. Over 20,000 apps...
She'll be able to figure it out — she runs her own business at home and basically just needs e-mail and phones during the day, but complains that she feels tied to her desk too much. And smartphones are too small. So this'll give her some mobility at least around the house, plus she will probably love the other features.
You wouldn't get that idea from the way Apple markets it as the most useful and limitless device ever...

Yeah, I find it especially annoying/laughable about how reporters think the iPad is somehow going to save their industry/get them fatter paychecks. It makes them drool over it beyond reason.
That said, it's a neat and fairly functional device and I think it'll prove itself a good experience for her.
Had a brief play with one on sunday. Was round at one of my two sisters' houses for my nieces 3rd birthday. Her husband is an Apple fan-boi. He'd pre-ordered the iPad and had it in his hands 24 hours before the shops had it.
Nice little device - considerably smaller than I'd imagined. Browsed a couple of websites. Touchscreen nice and responsive, and the interface is lovely, like the iPhone.
There were a few apps on there which he'd downloaded for my niece which she had great fun playing - fun/edumicational type apps. He had similar ones on the iPhone though which she used to play.
Overall though, he summed it up by saying it was a device for browsing the web while sat on the loo, which seemed pretty apt.
Well, I have a one in 180 chance of winning an iPad now :P It does seem like a neat gadget to play with, but I'm not spending money on it.

Coy fail.I haven't had a close look at a kindle but I'm under the impression its a different experience than an LCD screen. Its 'electronic paper' which is supposed to look a lot different. Also, because the iPad is all touch screen, its constantly smudged and re-smudged. The kindle I believe is button driven so your screen isn't a wreck all the time. Just some differences....

and they are both buried under waves of DRM and corporate nanny decision making.
Of all companies, at least Sony's e-readers are DRM free offerings, and they come in multiple sizes.
Also, Asus announced the Eee Pad, so we will be able to see what a touchpad design like this is truely capable of doing in a free environment.

Kindle also uses "electronic paper". It's a bit different than an LCD —*the screen requires no power to display something, only to change the image on the screen. In other words, each page "sticks" with essentially zero power consumption no power until you "turn" the page. It means the screen is slow (I don't think a Kindle can play videos). But this gives the Kindle significantly more battery life (and readability in different environments) than an iPad or smartphone.

When I visited e-ink company in Boston, they were working on making it work with video, but they had a problem with ghosting back then. E-ink (or e-paper) is perfectly readable in the sun, where LCDs suck. It also has no backlighting, and it's a lot easier on the eyes.

She already has had it for about a week, she seems to be enjoying it, but isn't going to be too adventerous with it until she has a proper case for it.
Thanks to Apple's hardon for AT&T, and AT&T's global quest to suck, the forums aren't the only people who may know you own an ipad.
Haven't opened or even received it yet. Phew, but this is pretty stupid on them.
