Thread: Another Criminal Dead

Isn't everyone, potentially speaking that is, a threat? I don't really think thats an arguement for or against harsh gun control laws...maybe moderation as far as gun control goes? I think its kind of a chicken-egg thing. By the way, Hi everyone, I'm the new guy.

IIRC, Britain has a lot stricter gun control than the USA, and very little firearm offenses. So it certainly seems that if the public doesn't carry guns, most criminals won't either. Of course the situation in the USA is different, since there are already that many guns out there.

Britain is also an island, which kind of helps in minimizing smuggling.

Yes, and if it wasn't an island it would have neighbors like "France" and "Ireland" instead of Mexico.

The question is: why are the french and the irish less likely to have (or smuggle) guns than the mexicans? Presumably they border fucked up nearly-3rd world countries as well, and so would need lax gun laws due to smuggling and whatnot. And if they dont, then the next country will, or the next, and so on, which, given lokis argument, would mean essentially the same thing as being next to a shitty gun filled country means being a shitty gun filled country.
"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink, because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl.

Welcome. Whereabouts in the Bay Area? I used to live in Berkeley (and Albany and El Cerrito....)

Eh? Which third world country do the French and Irish border?

Yeah. Spawnie, I didn't really follow your post.

The point would be that you could follow the chain of shittiness until you reached a third world country. Whichever countries bordered that would immediately have to (by your logic) sanction light gun laws, and thus, the countries next to them...

Except Loki did not equate being next to a crime-ridden third world country with being a crime-ridden third world country, he merely said it had a noticeable influence.
Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"

He did not. I was responding to Steelys "it would have neighbors like france and ireland..."

What relates to lokis posts is how relevent a crime-ridden third world country next door is to actual gun statistics. Loki seems to take "we live next to mexico" as panacea for any gun debate, as he has used it in every discussion of this type that i can remember, but never with an attempt at a solution. However, if the only solution to living next to a crime-ridden third world country were to be a third, second or first world country ridden with crime then logically, every country would be the same. This is not the case. Countries are ridden with crime, but not the same. I was really wondering what he would uphold as the determining factors in this debate, if it wasnt that country x bordered mexico or not.

The point is that having a large border with a third world country means you'll find it very hard to prevent the smuggling of contraband...

France is next to Belgium. Which does have a lot of guns by the way (and produces a lot of them), as does Germany.

I think the biggest amount of guns that fell into criminal hands in the Netherlands were weapons caches left by Gladio, for when the Ruskies came. That was a bit embarassing when they found out those were missing...

Belgium has a functioning state (though apparently not a functioning government)...

I know. You mention it every time we have a debate about guns in Yankeeland
