Thread: Racism and Tea Partiers Part Deux

    Chauchology.

We are fairly well dependent on government actions or funding, though. At least if we drive cars on roads, or ride subways, trains, or buses. Call 911 for fire or police intervention, or expect an ambulance to take us to a hospital if we're hurt, and expect to find educated providers all along the way.

In other words, pretty much everyone.

Yes, but saying that we rely on the government for basic stuff doesn't translate to ridiculing those who resist its expansion. Nor does someone who relies on government for lots of things undermine the argument of someone who wants less government. It's like criticizing those who protested vote-rigging in Iran last year for voting.

Is this really about "ridiculing"? That's a media tactic. But it's also nothing like vote rigging; that's a structural or implementation flaw that suggests corruption.

Pretty much anyone with a brain understands we need to rely on government for "basic stuff". We can argue about what "basic stuff" means and whether its expansion is doing good or harm, or who pays and why.

That's partly why I started that other thread about the emergence of the right wing. Before the media show actually starts.

It is about ridiculing and media tactics when reading a New York Times opinion blog. That was my point; the piece was putting words in the mouth of a so-called "movement" and then taking potshots at it.

You may as well speculate about what Otto von Bismark thinks about capital gains taxes and then lambast him for his views.

Nah, I'm not speculating about the past. I do find it interesting that this "movement" of the Libertarians (started by Ron Paul) and the Tea Partiers (reinforced by Palin and Rand Paul) has been consistently called nonsense, illigitimate, amorphous, fill in the blank. But they seem to keep gaining momentum. Did the main stream media and conventional political analysts underestimate them? Or are they only now gaining attention because the media is giving them press?
