It is not unusual for a tractor to have 1,000,000 or more miles on it before the engine needs major work. The Friend just told me that the '04 Volvo engine is well known for running 1.7 million miles before they crater.

The only reason for this that I can think of is that it would put a monumental dent in Insurance companies profits.
Nah, insurance companies don't lose much on those safety features: the differences in the amount they pay out for injuries is fairly small. Where they get killed is replacement value, and new cars have high replacement value. It's all in the actuarial tables. So that's why it costs so much to insure new vs. old. Besides, if the car is old enough, just stop paying for collision insurance.

Today, we wanted to give you a heads up about our plans for Real ID on our official forums, discuss the design philosophy behind the changes we’re making, and give you a first look at some of the new features we’re adding to the forums to help improve the quality of conversations and make the forums an even more enjoyable place for players to visit.

The first and most significant change is that in the near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID -- that is, their real-life first and last name -- with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it. These changes will go into effect on all StarCraft II forums with the launch of the new community site prior to the July 27 release of the game, with the World of Warcraft site and forums following suit near the launch of Cataclysm. The classic Battle.net forums, including those for Diablo II and Warcraft III, will be moving to a new legacy forum section with the release of the StarCraft II community site and at that time will also transition to using Real ID for posting.
So not only do you get to spam facebook with Starcraft II updates, your full name will now be connected to anything you post to the blizzard forums. So when that next employer googles you, s/he gets to find out all about your Protoss fetish. Not to mention how easy it is to track people down using only a full name, especially for those poor bastards who have "edgy" parents and a unique name.

Also, if you have an Autozone in your area, they will hook a diagnostic machine to your car for free, and an O2 sensor failure would show up on their machine. If the sensor really is busted, then I guess you would have to replace it.

It sucks that car dealerships still operate that way, but I guess they get their money that way.
Crap. That was sort of in the back of my mind, that the electronics might be fucked up. I had a Chevy that started that way....Check Engine light kept coming on. A nice guy at a garage disconnected the battery and punched in some reset codes, and it was fine. But that was AFTER the dealership kept yanking me around, and wanted to get under the engine to trace the tangle of wires....by the hour.

Guess I'm going back to the nice garage guy. I hope he'll accept the computer print-out from the dealership (that cost $90) and the codes are on the receipt.

Be careful with that - the service people at a dealership actually know what needs to be done - the "nice guy at the garage" will cut corners.

And the price your dealership quoted is less than what I paid to have an O2 sensor replaced on a 2002 Sentra (that later had something else equally expensive break, at which point I decided to quit wasting money on an ancient car).

In all my dealings with the "dealership service people" and the "nice guy at the garage", 9 out of 10 times, the nice guy was right, fixed it better, and cheaper, than the assholes at the garage who wouldn't even look at it for less than $50!

....I asked the nice guy at the dealership for advice. (If it was his car, his son, etc.) He couldn't/wouldn't say, because he's employed by the dealer. An independent nice garage guy can be more honest, especially if he doesn't have a bunch of used cars for sale in his parking lot.

ack I just hate this whole thing. I wish we had a nice trolly or train service in town, and we didn't need a fucking car to get around. Let alone a second one. Our bus service sucks. It won't get him from here to there and back, and they stop running at 9pm anyway. Budget cuts.

Why Islamists Love the World Cup

Jihadists are some of the most ardent fans of the world’s most popular sport...

Bin Laden—whose strict Islamist worldview proscribes music, women’s education, gambling, drinking, homosexuality, and the shaving of beards—is a fan of the game, and his preferred position is center forward. He is one of the many jihadists who worship the world’s most popular sport. “It’s on the whole their favorite thing after jihad,” says Scott Atran, an American and French anthropologist who has studied the interplay between terror groups and soccer...

Which idiotic mind thought that one up?

I'll be especially interested in the reaction of the German Datenschutzbeauftragter (person responsible for data protection), as the laws specifically state that an online service is required to provide anonymity if asked for by the client.

[...]r Brand said that one Blizzard employee posted his real name on the forums, saying that there was no risk to users, and the experiment went drastically wrong.
"Within five minutes, users had got hold of his telephone number, home address, photographs of him and a ton of other information," said Mr Brand
The post and topic has since been removed from the Blizzard forum.
They would not have had this problem in the first place, if they had not allowed the switching of users (instead of one single forum user per account, you can use every character you own - in effect, you can have up to 50 aliases. And the ignore function only works on a per-character basis...) and had some decent moderation (yes, that means around the clock and on weekends).

My own name is pretty unique.

Fun fact: Googling my name yielded a mention of a PHP guestbook module I wrote for a CMS when I first began to learn about PHP. I promptly opened it to SQL-Injection attacks (that's what you get when you insert the GET parameters directly into the SQL string...) Thankfully, I've learned a lot since then.

Yeah, we had a variant of that on the German forums as well. One guy said that he did not believe this to be a great deal - a singular information cannot yield anything worthwhile.

As proof he offered his IP adress. Obviously, he had forgotten that he runs an Apache server on his router (SSL was enabled as well, by the way) and on this Apache server runs a forum (okay, directly accessing the IP only yielded the default apache page ("It works!"), but the sub-url "/forum/index.php" served it right up). This forum then sported some pictures of him, his real firstname and, due to him using a DynDNS-like service, we also got his real lastname and home adress.

And I told him real friendly-like, that I could've rooted his box due to the forum software version he is using, which suffers from a failure to sanitize uploaded files.

I did not even break out the real hacking software like Nessus

That's not a really difficult word. We have other words/sentences for that purpose

"Blaukraut bleibt Blaukraut, und Brautkleid bleibt Brautkleid."
"Fischers Fritz fischt frische Fische. Frische Fische fischt Fischers Fritz."
"Der dicke Dirk trug den dünnen Dirk durch den dicken, tiefen Dreck. Da dankte der dünne Dirk dem dicken Dirk, daß der dicke Dirk den dünnen Dirk durch den dicken, tiefen Dreck trug.

So, I flip on cnbc for a quick look at those clowns on their octo-box windows, and they mention that Lindsey Lohan has TWEETED a Cato Institute (their fave think tank) article, relating it to her recent OUTRAGEOUS conviction.

One of the most sought after games for the Gamecube. Still priced at $49.95 I couldn't take a picture cause my phone was dead this is one of those no one is going to believe me stories . If I didn't already own a copy, I would have bought it, full price be damned, just for the LOL.
Even during the remodel, my stash spot is still good to use Went back today and the game was still there.

I'm WTFing because I can't figure out why I saved some stuff on the computer.

Yes, I'm so awesome that when I should be sorting physical belongings I am fucking with virtual ones instead.

Activision-Blizzard caved, and no real names will be required for the forums.

Honestly have no idea yet. They deserve something, but I don't know what. The ads as is are extremely minimal.
The fact they have no idea what gold "is" besides a profile trophy, makes me a little suspicious of the whole thing.

maybe I'll send them a postcard like they joked about.

I even managed to read 15 words of it.

Then I deleted it, because I didn't actually care what it said.

A woman who pleaded guilty to having sex with the biological son she gave up for adoption and later tracked down on the Internet has been sentenced nine years to 30 years in prison.

Aimee L. Sword, 36, of Waterford Township apologized at her sentencing Monday in Oakland County Circuit Court. She had pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in a deal with prosecutors.

Police say Sword used Facebook in 2008 to find her son, who's now 16. She gave him up for adoption when he was only a few days old, the Detroit Free Press reported.

"When she saw this boy, something just touched off in her — and it wasn't a mother-son relationship, it was a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship," the newspaper quoted attorney Mitchell Ribitwer as saying. "Aimee's searching for a reason why this happened. She can't understand it. She's going to get some counseling."

The boy testified they had sex in Waterford Township and Grand Rapids when he was aged 14.

Waterford Township is 30 miles northwest of Detroit.
The attorney Mitchell Ribitwer seems to have a knack for making things sound even worse than they actually are - and considering that this is a woman convicted of fucking her 14-year-old son that is pretty hard to do.
