Thread: Are All Chemicals Innocent Until Proven Guilty?

Default Are All Chemicals Innocent Until Proven Guilty?

Happened upon a CNN debate just now. Unsure about how it started (was it related to Mexico Gulf oil or the Russian fires?)

80,000 chemicals identified in modern daily life, but only ~200 tested. Honorable mention to the US FDA, followed by more stringent guidelines in Europe.

Chemicals in umbilical cords, plastics, red flags, etc. News tells us certain cancers and diseases are rising, childhood leukemias. But is that because our world is more dangerous, or our diagnostics are better?

So far all I can glean is that lipsticks, nail polish, hair dye, deodorants and plastic food containers are all lumped in with second hand smoke, lawn fertilizers, and ocean oil dispersants.

And either fear of our food, air, water, soil....or trust that some agency is ahead of the game.

Has Eat your fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, avoid sunburn, brush your teeth and get plenty of exercise and sleep......grown exponentially into fear your produce, water, sunscreen and toothpaste? And check your mattress and sheets for chemicals that may KILL YOU?

    omg

OK, now I know it's a series called Toxic America. Has anyone seen this and can comment? I just happened on it midstream.....

the ending had Dr. Gupta going through a typical kitchen with Teflon-coated pans, plastic food containers, carpets with imbedded chemicals, babies crawling around, and indoor air quality.

Sounded like our grandmothers (or great grand mothers) were right all along. Cook your own food and cook with cast iron, wash veggies (or boil them to death), stay out of the sun if you can or wear a hat and long sleeves if you can't, carpets are magnets for dust and dander (don't use them or throw them out), glass is always better than plastic or tin/aluminum, open the windows, air the house and take the baby out for fresh air.

This is advice I could link to from the late 1800s. Catherine Beecher Stowe.

Honestly, if it's no great inconvenience to avoid them then yeah sure avoid them. It doesn't have to hurt to err on the side of caution.

It gets worser whenever I turn on the teevee. Same station (CNN) and yeah, it's the Doctor Gupta interviewing more people. I keep entering mid-stream, but the latest "guest" sounded knowledgable enough to scare the panties off of any random listener.

Is this being televised in airports?

They are talking about science and theses, priorities and cancers, FDA, DDT, cadmium, lead, BPA.....fluctuating between Don't Worry, Be Happy and OMFG put on a HEPA mask and live in a bubble!

Any EU members want to post about REACH? What-How-When did you know what you know?

Bare in mind that most Americans were flamboozled by imported Chinese toys, toothpaste, jewelry, and dog food containing contaminants.

REACH is a new European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006). It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances. The new law entered into force on 1 June 2007.

Chemicals is all we are. All we are is all we are. Chemistry is everything.

What is it with you and your paranoia?

If your grandparents were so right, why are you probably going to live longer than they did?

Chemicals! Medicine is chemicals. Vitamins is chemicals.
