After another off topic discussion about languages I thought it would be good to have a dedicated thread. I am more of a math than a language person. I am not really good in learning languages but I have a more 'scientific' interest in them. I think it's very interesting to know where certain rules and expressions come from.

At the top I wrote the same sentence in the languages I know, ordered by my knowledge about it. It could be that the French one is completely wrong as my French.... c'est la merde!

Meh, my German atrophied horribly during my North American isolation. Starting with grad school, I haven't entered another country but Canada, though my surgery this year interrupted a conference trip to Heidelberg, and a planned visit with cousins im Schwartzwald. I was good by American standards, though doubtlessly Europpean polyglots would have found it pathetic. Now? Not so much.

GGT your fake German sounds like Dutch to me. Or is it fake Dutch?

I think writing English in German phonetics works better than writing German in English phonetics. Maybe because English isn't very phonetic in the first place?

Rough transliteration: Shalom! Bruhim haba'aim l'hoda'at lashon.

Of course, transliterations don't do it justice - the 'h' and 'r' in Bruhim, some of the 'a's, etc. But you get the idea. Also I took a stab at the correct translation of 'thread' - the actual translation would be חוט but I think הודעה or 'message' is the correctly used term on forums.

I could probably guess my way around an Aramaic translation, but it would be irrelevant in the context since the language doesn't have meaningful nouns for things like 'thread'.

Immediately made me think of this...

In Finland the band accidentally awaken Mustakrakish, the lake troll. The troll rampages, killing thousands, destroying entire cities, and disables all electronics in Finland. The band decides to put the troll back to sleep so they can once again use e-mail and their Dethphones (Metal-themed cellphones). But without electronics, they're forced to use acoustic instruments. They confront the troll in the lake and attempt to sing him a lullaby with the accoustic instruments. It appears to be working until Murderface's Dethphone rings and he answers it. The troll rages and destroys the instruments. Murderface loses reception on his Dethphone and throws it into the troll's throat. The troll kills itself trying to get the Dethphone out.
