Thread: Michiganders screwed

  1. #31
You had a state full of a lot of uneducated people who were getting really high salaries, and were promised ridiculously high pensions (and medical insurance) despite producing inferior goods. At some point, demand for such goods was bound to fall and the salaries and the benefits were unsustainable. That time is now.

    Just like the steel industry...

...which reiterates my point that there is nothing special about Michigan/Detroit. Just another state so deeply dependent on one industry that the state almost collapses when that industry is shipped abroad.

  3. #33
Yes, and now all the areas that were full of uneducated people with high salaries are full of uneducated people with no salaries.

But no need to invoke the rest of your BS, is there? Economic readjustment, and expected part of economic cycles. Sure, spineless management caved in and gave out overly fat contracts. That's nothing new. We should let the market eat its babies, and just let the automakers fail. Or so say the tea partiers. God knows what unemployment would look like had Obama allowed that to happen. That evil Obama.

I'm unsure how a Democrat holding racist opinions negates the idea that Conservatives have been known to hold racist opinions and attempt to pass or uphold racist laws.
You brought up a guy who pales in comparison to the Democratic guy.

Your attempting to claim Lincoln would be a member of the modern Republican party is equally ridiculous as Lincoln went to war with the Confederacy in order to maintain the United States as a whole, with the Confederacy seperating due to its positions on States' rights over Federal laws, in addition to its positions on slavery.
There was a a R next to his name. In addition just to be clear here, Lincoln fought to preserve the union not end state's rights. Someone can hold the belief that Texas knows more about Texans then the United States congress and still not be in support of succeeding from the union, nice try though.

I can't tell but does the Republican party still support racial profiling when it comes to matters of security? I'd also say that they've adopted other forms of bigotry, because outright trying to go back on the Civil Rights movement would be political suicide.
Hey there is a suspect. He is 50 year's old, driving a 2001 Ford, he is clean shaven and is white, he suspected of killing someone. Now they are looking for this guy and so under the idea liberal idea our police can't immediately discard blacks from the search file? Now that is absurd. Airport monitoring on a statistical sampling of people more likely to do something isn't any more racist then my above example.

So essentially the crazy portion of the Tea Party, or at least the ones that get air time?
Anyone who supports not voting for someone based on the color of their skin is a racists and *NEWS FLASH* they are not a representative portion of any major political group or following. The "Tea Party" is not racist. The vast, vast majority of those who describe themselves as part of the tea party are not racist.

Of course remember leftists in the media don't like the tea party movement. And there is a dedicated movement to infiltrate and "crash" tea parties.

So if you have a mistaken impression based on what you observe in the media it is quite understandable.

A guy who quotes Breitbart yammers about "mistaken impressions!"

Breitbart has been proved to be a lying snake. Fox has essentially joined the Tea Party movement, and CBN is always 100% conservative 100% of the time. You've quoted yourself the OJ Simpsons of media.

Please list a few of the 'horrible' politicians, what characteristics made them 'horrible', and how they caused Michigan's economic troubles. Also, what do you mean by 'secondary' education system? Do you mean post-highschool? AFAIK Michigan has very good universities, technical schools and community colleges. This is the first I've heard they are 'horrible.' Can you please list some statistics that prop up your claim?

Erm, secondary means everything between elementary school and college (i.e. junior high and high school).

    http://abclocal.go.com/wjrt/story?se...cal&id=7616586

Your college attendance rates are also below the national average (bad compared to your neighbors, though better than the south, if that's something you want to be proud of). You have some really good universities, but it's not like a vast majority of people in Michigan enroll there.

Well, ok. I know my current local high school's pretty good, which is one reason I live here, but the public schools where I grew up were bad and likely still are. Not sure about the rest of the state tbh.

Once more you attack the messenger and not the actual message that is being made. If it is a fact that there are liberals who are attempting to infiltrate the tea parties and make them look bad then it doesn't matter if the source is Fox News or MSNBC.

BTW Tear care to make a list of all "acceptable" news sources? What news sites, news shows, papers and/or programs are fair, balanced and objective?

Also, on the topic being discussed related to the OP...

Well we are living here in Allentown
And they're closing all the factories down
Out in Bethlehem they're killing time
Filling out forms, standing in line
Well our fathers fought the Second World War
Spent their weekends on the Jersey Shore
Met our mothers at the USO
Asked them to dance, danced with them slow
And we're living here in Allentown
But the restlessness was handed down
And it's getting very hard to stay

Well we're waiting here in Allentown for the Pennsylvania we never found
For the promises our teachers gave if we worked hard, if we behaved
So the graduations hang on the wall but they never really helped us at all
No they never taught us what was real
    Iron and coke, chromium steel
And we're waiting here in Allentown
But they've taken all the coal from the ground
And the union people crawled away

Every child had a pretty good shot to get at least as far as their old man got
Something happened on the way to that place
They threw an American flag in our face

Well, I'm living here in Allentown
And it's hard to keep a good man down
But I won't be getting up today

And it's getting very hard to stay
And we're living here in Allentown

Edit: It seems more like if you have an industry that has existed in a certain area for a decent amount of time, for instance decades, and relies solely on unskilled labor, like coal mining, steel work, or working in an auto factory, when that industry is no longer profitable or becomes obsolete, you're left with a group of workers who have spent too many years, are too old, or too specialized in a skill that really isn't applicable elsewhere, to move onto another area of work, and are thus left by the wayside.

This is something that arises in biology too. If a species becomes too specialized for survival in a certain niche environment, and either that environment disappears, or conditions change, the species is usually culled. We should not operate as brutally indifferent as nature though.

No party is perfect of course but the Democratic party has racism in its very platform! Hello Affirmative Action??

OH LOL, Hello anti-gay marriage (and in some cases anti-homosexuality laws, or anti-sodomy laws).

We can play this game all day.

Edit: I'm not trying to apologize for the actions of the Democratic party, just point out you keep ignoring when the party you vouch for does comparable things.

Lewk, Breitbart is a lying hobag. He got busted red-handed taking down that woman in Georgia. Liar. Busted. Red-handed.

Fox abandoned all pretense of impartiality long ago. Their commentary hosts are all far-right. Their token liberal guests are living straw men. They make up smearing news. Their hosts hit the road with the tea party, actually hosting rallies. They're not just skewed, their nakedly extremist.

    CBN is fundamentalist.

Your quoting these three is the converse of some liberal quoting the DU. It is laughable. It is grotesque.

I can't imagine how that would be relevant to your claim that Michigan's economy tanked because all of its secondary schools are 'horrible.'

Really? You can't think about why people without the skills to succeed in the modern economy would have trouble attracting companies to the state or get jobs with the ones unfortunate enough to already be located there?

So still no denial from Tear on the actual information. Nice. And DU is a forum not a news site. Are you going to ever provide a list of sources that are impartial unbiased and acceptable to you?

OH LOL, Hello anti-gay marriage (and in some cases anti-homosexuality laws, or anti-sodomy laws).
This has to do with racism how?

  21. #51
    Discrimination is discrimination, Lewk.

That even includes religion, and that's a choice - unlike race, gender, sexual orientation, or age.

Although I could have sworn you said at some point that you thought of marriage as a religious institution, and not a civil one, and therefore objected to laws against gay marriage on that principle.
We're stuck in a bloody snowglobe.

That's not what I was questioning the relevancy of. Nor do you have a basis to claim all mi secondary schools are bad. Detroit's got bad schools and that's part of it's problem, but not the cause.

Come on, this thread has Lewk conflating Lincoln with Palin, my post makes boat-loads more sense in comparison!
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. So is promoting people who work harder. So is not hiring criminals... playing semantics here but my point about the Democratic party and liberals was racism.

Although I could have sworn you said at some point that you thought of marriage as a religious institution, and not a civil one, and therefore objected to laws against gay marriage on that principle.
You are correct. Marriage should not be a recognized government institution. Being married or not being married should confer no penalties or benefits. I don't like the Big Brother party of the Republican party. Weather it is the bed room or the board room its not governments job to interfere. Just because I identify myself with Republicans don't mean I support every part of their position. When taken as a whole they are FAR better then Democrats.

When have I ever claimed that every single school in Michigan is bad? Seriously, wtf.

When you said: "You have a horrible secondary education system" was there some other context you were speaking in, or were you following the line of discussion where you were tossing out simplistic, wide brush, politically inflammatory reasons why Michigan's economy is screwed up? Did you mean me personally? I have a horrible secondary school system? What?

Yeah, I guess I'm having trouble finding a site on the left that lies as nakedly as the ones you cite. Doubtlessly they are there, they just aren't mainstream.

At this point I'm accepting those who don't shout their conflict of interest from the rooftops. Since you haven't ven met that standard, further discussion is pointless.

This is why precise statements are preferable when possible! Though you were answering a pretty open-ended question, so

Or one can not be an idiot and interpret statements in a reasonable manner. When is the statement "schools in x are bad" ever interpreted to mean that every single school in x is bad? Use some common sense, people.
