That's a thing? That explains some things. I had to go with a science victory in my last game because I got impatient waiting for my peace treaty with Bismarck to expire, and had the parts nearly ready anyways. Do you know the conditions needed to see this bug? I know I've seen peace treaties expire before.

Seems I'm back on Victoria, so no pictures for you.

Not a clue/ Maybe it becomes a problem sometimes when declaring with city states involved. I have Venice as ally and with protection and still couldn't declare of Lizzy after she declared on Venice. Needs fixing alright.

There's a variant I'm thinking of playing next game. The AW or Always War variety. Every civ you meet, you need to declare war on immediately and never ever make peace.

Victoria pictures will do as well

edit: Hey, I just noticed Venice is in the green, so I need to donate money.

Started as Prussia. This is hardly the most impressive game, since it's already 1874 and I've only just managed to form Germany. I formed the North German Federation back in the '50s, after asserting cultural hegemony over Austria. Afterwards they became Austria-Hungary and were being a little bitch and kept beating me at the diplomacy game, stealing the South German states from me and thwarting my attempts to get them back in my sphere of influence. So I started the war of German Unification to get Baden, Bavaria, and Wurtemburg from Austria. Finished it not too long before this screenshot was taken, and immediately formed Germany. Unfortunately, I also picked up some infamy in the process.

Not even a year after peace, the French declared war on me. Guess they're still a bit sore over the last couple wars. I have too much infamy already right now to get any new territory from them, so I'll be going for a white peace. My army's still a bit shredded from the unification war, but I'm sure I'll destroy the frogs anyways. They don't have much of a standing army, so most of their army are draftees, while I've got a professional army. Their navy can trounce mine though, so I'll be keeping my ships in the ports.

The USA isn't doing too well. We were briefly allied (wanted to use them against Russia), but the bear was pissy over losing Alaska to them in an earlier war, so while the civil war was going on they started a fight with them. I had just come off a fight with Russia, so I wasn't in a good enough shape to help. Then the Brits got in on it too. The US lost a lot of territory in that war.

Spoils from the last war with Russia:

Took Latvia to be closer to their capital in future wars. I'm figuring that I'm not done fighting the Bear. Didn't realize until afterwards that it left my empire non-contiguous. Oh well.

Brits, as usual, ridiculously far ahead of everyone else. I'm trying to stay on their good side for now. The Netherlands snuck into the Great Powers list while I wasn't looking too. I don't think I've seen them do that before unless I was driving.

Flixy, if you've got extra cash, allying with a cultural city-state or even completing quests for them is a great way to get extra culture (as you are already aware). If you're dead-bent on the cultural victory, make sure you've got a city with very strong production for the Utopia Project. If you need to whip out that victory in the middle of a war the construction could really screw you over.

EDIT: Didn't realized you posted before me!
I had two cultural allies but they were the earliest to be conquered If the war against Caesar goes well, I may liberate one or two though. But first I have to conquer three other cities, not sure how likely that is..

Thanks. Really does look like an interesting deep little game. I still have Victoria lying about here. Shame I didn't really get into it first time I started playing. Maybe I'm not as willing to put in the time I used to. It really is a tough nut to get comfortably into. May be giving it another spin after I lose the Civ Bug.

It's the problem everyone has with Vicky. The learning curve on the first game is extremely steep. The second game doesn't seem quite so difficult though, if you ever get an opportunity to try a grab at it.

It's not, and it is quite worth playing (although I found myself oddly confused and unsure about what the hell I was doing when I started a new game this morning).

I know. But still, I played it out with military precision to a points-victory. Still 2 policies away from the culture victory. I think a culture victory is pretty much impossible unless you are able to satisfy a lucky amount of favours for a city state. I played culturally oriented and I needed at least 30 turns extra to win a cuultural victory...

I got a culture victory fairly easily. The only one I didn't get before stopping playing was a diplomatic victory. I have two fairly early stage games right now, I might see if one or the other of them can pull that off.

I found the key to a culture victory was controlling very few cities (2 in my case) and having them both capable of cranking out production on important buildings/wonders. Choosing policies wisely helps, of course, as does the order.

Took out Alexander, Harun, and Hiawatha tonight, pillaged a lot of gold (x3 because of the Songhai special ability!)

Wraith, have the Brits release Scotland, Ireland, Mughalistan, and Canada to start the game. It keeps them from being as obnoxious (they still finish first by a landslide).

I might actually do that next game. The Brits are so obscenely powerful in this game that they end up being detrimental to the game.

I tried playing as India (got a country to force Britain to release Bombay province). I managed to conquer (or inherit) most of non-British India, along with Afghanistan and parts of Persia. I also had pretty advanced technology. Despite this, Britain had about 4 times more troops than me headquartered in India alone. Their total score was higher than of the next 4 great powers combined. They had something like 200 million people (the ones that count), thanks to its share of India and chunks of China. They also managed to turn half of British India into states. Not fun.

I'm playing Siam, Huge World, King Level, and I'm liking it a lot. I've only got three cities but I'm allies with 7 or 8 city states. I maxed out the patronage tree so I'm getting lots of research and culture from them. They also give me food, military units, and great persons. I've been in a continuous Golden Age for going on 25 turns now because I've been converting the great people. I'm highest in tech and I haven't built a military unit since my first archer but I've still got a good sized army. Not sure how this is going to work out in the end though, Rome is devouring the rest of the world....

    I can't play.

Steam asked me to log in, which is unsual. I haven't had to do that since I created my account years ago, so no idea what my password could be.

Going through their password reset process, they eventually emailed me a verification code, and a pre-set secret question; 'What is your mother's maiden name'.

So you go back to their login area, enter the verification code provided in their email, and enter your answer to the secret question; my mother's maiden name. It then asks you to provide a new password.

This is the point the process fails, hopeless message comes up next saying either the secret answer given is incorrect, or new password you've just entered is 'not valid'. Which is it? New password has to be more than 5 chars long, which mine is.

So you have to go through the process over and over again, each time with a new verification code, trying different ways to enter my mother's maiden name (capitalised, not, all capitals etc), different new passwords, nothing fucking works.

So now I've had to raise a ticket with Steam support and wait four months or whatever for them to fucking respond.

God, something similar happened to me not long ago. I don't know about you but I only get very specific and usually very short periods of time to play. So when I'm ready to play, I'm READY TO PLAY. When that happened I thought I would lose my mind. Good luck.

Sit Rep from what is becoming my lets try shit out to see what sticks game. Still have the 16 cities, 6 occupied ones still working on courthouse and my cash is 33/turn and 20 . Those problems are over. One thing that killed my economy was that although the conquered cities were all connected with roads, none of them led to my capital. Which means paying the upkeep, but not getting the rewards. Once I connected one city, the others connected automatically and I got +27 gold/turn, plus 4 from that social policy, two have to wait for courthouse to finish before they can build harbours. So, easily maintaining 10 original cities, 6 conquered ones with more happies and cash in the future.

Also, I'm playing continents, got me a caraval to meet new people and they traded 3 new luxury resources with me, +15 I got 12 out of 15 now.

So, on to the next expansion phase. Gonna build 6-8 lancers before declaring on Hiawatha if he doesn't declare on me first. Thinking of razing his cities and simply sending my settlers in afterwards to prevent the whole occupied bonanza.

Hm can't see no comments on when it's due out.

Also, doesn't look like they're going to amend being able to skip past the opening cinematic.

I'm really not that bothered by that cinematic. I just want them everlasting peace agreements out.

HyaWhatta is waiting for me with riflemen, while I'm still trotting around with musketeers and longswordsmen. I'm outteched, outgunned and outnumbered. First time this happened to me in this game.

How is the willingness to do a little succession game here by the way?

I have seen them on civfanatics, but those guys are freaks. I'd be the disrupting factor I'd think. While here we all blunder about and have a chance to see how others play.

It's a joined game. First we pick a leader and what victory to aim for. Then one guy starts a game plays 20 turns (or something) taking screenshots. Posts them with an after action report and uploads the save somewhere for the next guy, who play 10, screenshot aar, etc etc.

    So something like this: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=383903

Without the huge amount of theorizing what to do, as I said, freaks. After checking the first post, check second post of the second page, halfway down 3rd page for the actual report.

This being a new game, there's a lot of discussion.

Got my access sorted on the morning following my Steam access issues. It think they must have been having probs with their authentication server, as I didn't do anything different to get my password reset from what I was trying before? It just suddenly decided to work.

    Aaaaaaaanyway.

Since then, I completed my game as Persia, Large, Marathon, Prince. Won by domination, a little too easily. Nappy had half the globe, but after the initial fight, he didn't seem to be producing more units, so I just rolled through his cities, razing them as I went.

So onto my next; Egypt, Huge, Epic. My first King difficulty game. What a difference over Prince

Have made it to the modern era thus far. Two other nations squashed the rest of 'em; Persia and the Ayrabs. Persia is ahead of me on tech and has started building SS stuff, whereas I have only just researched them, so I will lose the game in a space race .

Have tanks and modern armour and helicopter gunships and all kinds of artillery though, and am having a nice little war at a chokepoint with Persia. He is being far from a pushover.

    Fun fun.

Also got a screenie at home of Leonardo da Vinci driving a truck which I thought was class.

    Huh. What a strange concept.

So last night I abandoned my third attempt as Siam on King Pangea - strat was to make friends with all the city states and use that support to get uber culture and tech. I just couldn't make it work and it was boring.

So, then I started a King level continents game as the Aztecs. I read a bit in my strat guide about them and ran with a attack and kill everything strat. That never worked for me in Civ 4, so I was hesitant. But I just started cranking out jag warriors and killed the first two city states I encountered, then killed Darius after two wars, then attacked Ghandi, getting a free city but overextended myself a bit and had to take some gold for peace. That last bit had more to do with it being 130am and me having to get up at 530am. In hindsight I probably should have pulled back, consolidated and harrassed him. But the action was very far from my main core of cities. Weird, the continents world has a big ass continent on it.... In any case, being a rampaging barbarian is vastly better than a cultured buddy buddy freak.
