Just joking. Kinda. Kids in rural areas still ride bikes and skateboards without helmets. Some even ride ATV's and snow mobiles without helmets. Even adults ride motorcycles without helmets. Not the same thing as Dolly Parton sharing a bed with siblings and not caring if they wet the bed instead of using the outhouse, because it was warm and they had no heat. Now is it.

WE didn't even have MTV until the mid 80's. We did get cable in the late 70's, but MTV didn't get on it until 1987 or 1988. (I can't remember which.) When The Kid was born, I had a 13 channel, console TV. The only reason I had cable was because the cable company forgot to turn that line off when the last person moved out. I only got more channels after a friend from Douglas came to live here and work the rigs. He had a cable box with remote he had bought at Radio Shack, so we hooked that up. Then, since he used to work for the cable company and knew the tricks, he climbed the pole outside and removed the block for Showtime and HBO! WOW! I thought I was in heaven to be able to use ALL the cable channels, and have a remote so I didn't have to get up to switch channels!

Kids here still ride bikes and skateboards without helmets! OMG, call the law! We do have a law that states anyone under 18 has to have a helmet on to ride, either as the driver or a passenger, a motorcycle or ATV...and THAT law is enforced! I am all for that tho. Inexperienced riders should have to wear helmets. You also have to own a helmet to get a motorcycle endorsement on your license. You also have to do a driving test for that endorsement, and you have to wear your helmet for that. You also have to have eye protection. That one is a bit fuzzy since sunglasses or regular glasses are considered protection. You also have to have leathers or heavy duty clothing/coat to be legal. Of course, there are those of us who end up wearing shorts and tank tops a lot of the time, because when we left the house we weren't expecting a ride!

EDIT: To ride an ATV on city streets, you have to have a valid driver's license for a car and have license plates on the ATV! That is the only requirements! You don't have to take a test or anything.

The rural areas around here average 2 outages per winter, many times for up to 2 weeks at a time. We had a propane tank, because our water heater and dryer ran on gas, but we had an electric kitchen stove and an oldtt coal stoker heat stove. Of course, that doesn't do much good without electricity to run the blower/fan. We had a tiny, portable stove that ran on it too. We closed off the entire house, except the kitchen, and basically lived in the kitchen until NEA got there to fix the lines. We could cook something like stew, if we started it about 5AM, it would be ready about 6PM, so we didn't really go hungry, but it sure sucked. Plus, being a ranch, someone had to go outside in the blizzard to take care of the cattle. They have to be fed in the winter, ya know? Plus, we had to bring in buckets of coal to keep the stoker working. Since we had a gas dryer and water heater, we were able to keep the house water lines from freezing, but just barely. When you got a glass of water, the cold had ice crystals in it!

The last time we had a severe outage in town, the power was out for 3 weeks. Even with ATV's, NEA couldn't get to the places the lines/poles were down. The country is too rugged and the snow was too deep. BFE had a whopping 1 generator in town, and that was at the grocery store. We had a guy staying with us who had a portable gas grill, and we called the owner of the hardware store and he braved walking about 8 blocks to get us bottles of gas from the store, because the grocery store doesn't carry it in the winter. The National Guard came in with portable generators for the apartment building I am living in (at that time, it was only older people living here, most with serious health problems) and the Senior Center, so they could cook meals for everyone in town!

Trust me, I am NOT romanticizing any of the hardships! In fact, those conditions are still considered the "norm" in many areas, mainly in the deep South, but still we have ranches around here that are over 75 miles to the nearest civilization. If you think those conditions don't exist there, mainly in the winter, you are wrong! It takes a special type of person to live like that! I am NOT one of those hearty, backwoods type person!

I never said my troubles are that bad. I said it takes a special kind of person to live in areas like remote ranches. But just remember, those are the people who "produce" your steak and hamburger and pork chops!

Bullshit. We don't need Wyoming ranchers for our beef. We have angus ranches right here in PA. Plus guernsey cows for our dairy, pigs and chickens too.

Kind of an odd us vs them attitude, though. (Where would Wyoming be without the steel from what is now the Rust Belt to build its rail roads? Or Detroit to build its cars?) It's supposed to be like a collective vision of a nation sharing its resources for the good of all her people.

GGT, the song is just an expression of what I feel about small town living!

Once again, I invite you to come visit me, so I can show you some of the things I am talking about. There are ranches here that are so big the rancher is a pilot with his own small plane because that is the best way to cover his whole ranch in a day. It's like that in Montana, Utah, Idaho, and the Dakota's too! Yes, PA has ranches, as do most states, but since so much land is used up by metro/urban/suburban growth, they aren't on scale, size-wise, as the ones in the lesser populated states. If you can't see that, I don't quite know how to explain it any better. You just need to come see it, I guess.

I know you think I am just blowing hot air here, but I'm not. I also know that I like living in a town where I know, by name, almost everyone I meet when I walk down the street! I also know I like living in a town where, if I get to hurting at 3AM, I can safely go for a walk. I also know I like living in a town where the crime rate is very low. In short...These ARE My People!

Speaking of small towns MUSICALLY, there's really no such thing. Not now. We have internet and youtube and all that social "net" stuff that makes people feel like they not only know what others' lives are like, but as if they can know small town life and romanticize it, too.

Small towns are notorious for bullying. Regardless of what Johnny Cougar's lyrics say, he really couldn't be himself in a small town. Not if he was gay, or atheist, or had a flare for dangerous behavior. Not when the whole town knew who graduated from HS or went to college, who got Mary Sue pregnant, dropped out or smoked pot. Small towns have a way of weeding that behavior out by being discriminatory. Small towns have a way of driving artists and rebels out of town, or rejecting anyone who's "different". At least they used to. There aren't too many really small towns around any more. They either died or incorporated with the county seat. Or there was a movement of people from other small towns becoming too big, so they tried to move to another small town!

Boundaries are being broken every day. You may live in a "small town" but it's still a global world.
