People who don't want their victim to run behind them. It's not uncommon at all; because it's effective and under normal circumstances doesn't lead to lethal injuries. (important if you are ever going to wind up in court).

I'm not really certain, but I think somebody told me or I read about it. Of course I was the intended victim too once. But that didn't quite work out the way the attacker expected.

It happened here in Istanbul. A female friend of mine had the not so smart habit of getting the wrong type of guys all worked up. One of them imagined himself to be her boyfriend. Then one night we're having dinner at a restaurant and this madman comes in and starts shouting at her and when I said he should shut the hell up he got angry at me and started threathening me. The restaurant staff threw him out. When we left the restaurant later on at first I thought he had gone. But he hadn't. He came running accross the street with a knife in his hand. I made a rather unexpected move (kicked against his knife hand) which caused the knife to slide back and into his hand. It was a bloody mess but at least it wasn't from my blood.
O by the way, what I forgot, by stabbing the gluts you can immobiliize a person with a relative small knife.
