Among my youth friends, I sort of get the notion they aspire the opposite. They do not really like the taste of beer, but drink it anyway as some kind of social wibe, with getting a buzz controlling the fun-o-meter of theirs.

    Personally I don't drink.
Tomorrow is like an empty canvas that extends endlessly, what should I sketch on it?

Well I can drink without having fun

I think I go for some Weissbier tonight.

I broke a drinking rule of mine last night...

    I drank this:

The rule? I swore never to drink Bundy again after an awful night as a teenager when I drank OP rum (Over Proof) which turned out to be 76.5% alcohol. If I even smelled Bundy after that I felt queezy!

I'm pleased to report that the Red Rum was ok and I am up early Sunday morning feeling fine.

AFAIK it is Australian Red Gum - meaning that the barrels used were made from Australian Red Gum (timber). It certainly changes the flavour.

We had a new festive drink called Bellini. Champagne with peach nectar. Anyone heard of that before? (way sweet)

    Fuck and yes.

I love Leffe. Did you have the Brune? We don't have the Brune in the US, only the Blonde. I've had to order it from Belgium to get Brune here. But in order to avoid the cost-per-beer being too high, I have to order it in bulk.

Here's my last order after unloading in my kitchen. Stopped doing it mainly because of cost, but damn the Brune is superior.

New York has super high taxes on booze, I'm told. Our Long Island contingent went shopping for wine and liquor in PA today, stocked up big time. Said their favorite single malt scotch is $80 in NY, but $50 in PA. Apparently NY state wines get around that state tax by being defined as an Agricultural product.

  13. #73
I think PA imposes minimal license costs (but restricts the number of licenses) and then just has sales tax. But NY has a massive licensing fee in addition to sales tax. The NY requirements are especially insane and onerous.

Tonight I am enjoying the fine (not really) offerings of doctor Jack Daniels

    But

    Come Monday

I am picking up a bottle of Ardbeg Supernova

This is a whiskey so fine your mother would cry

    It is 61% ethanol

It is the scotch they sing songs for
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

I have some Jack, too! I decided to be Thanksgivingful.

Dread, PA has a 6% sales tax on booze, NY charges 9%. Right?

  17. #77
Sounds about right, but I sorta forget. Most of my liquor comes from bars, so I never see the real cost.

Wait a minute here. You ordered all that Leffe from....whom? huh? Sure, beer isn't liquor, but....what are you saying? You buy beer from a distributor but not liquor?

  19. #79
US distributors don't stock it. I tried calling literally a dozen distributors in the region. There was also a beer store in Canada that occasionally had it, but was cutting back and I couldn't figure out how to get it across the border. I suspect InBev has simply stopped shipping it to the Western Hemisphere altogether. So I found a company in Belgium that ships it and offers decent pricing if I buy a crate or two (usually two has the lowest shipping costs and the lowest per-beer cost).

Wow Dread. You sure dig the stuff huh?

Well, I'm using my glass for the first time, and trying Leffe Triple for the first time.

Lady is drinking Shiraz. The decanter below was presented to her at the hotel she works at last week, by some Swedish students to whom she did a presentation and showed them round the hotel. We thought it would be great with red wine in it even though it's meant for water.

Like a Triple Not really sure how to explain. A bit stronger in alcohol, usually a bit hop-ish, and less sweet than a double, and lighter in taste and colour. It also has some extra fermentation in the bottle, so you shouldn't completely pour it out (the yeast makes you fart the next day ).

As far as Belgian beer goes, Leffe is one of the better, and definitely the one with the best availability, but if you can get your hands on a real Trappist beer (there's only 7 brands allowed to use that label), you should try it, I am a big fan of Orval myself.

    It was delicious!

Had a real ... spice to it that I wasn't expecting. YUM.

Flix - yep came across Trappist beers in Brugge - but didn't actually try any. Date back to the Trappist monks umpteen centuries ago.

Found this one place though, that on the entrance way to the bar there was a glass wall with well over one-hundred beers on display, all Belgian.

    Cool place

There's a bar in Hasselt with over 500 beers, and one somewhere in Limburg with even more! And my study association's bar has ~100 special beers, including most trappists (and they sell them for between ยค0,70 and €1,20!).

Oh and if you drink a trappist beer, any profit they make goes to charity By the way, the trappist monks may have been around for umpteen centuries but they 'only' started brewing beer a couple of centuries ago. All trappist beers are still brewed under monk supervision, with homegrown ingredients I think. The breweries are pretty to visit too, since it tend to be old monasteries. In contrast, Leffe is brewed at the same place as Stella.

Barfed Jack Daniels on my parents at age 16. Has never been touched since.

Things like this are why I am considering making a stop in Belgium on my next big vacation (which could be up to a year away due to money). Though I've heard Belgium is crazy boring, and unless I'm with someone it will just be me going and drinking alone before visiting friends in the Zionist Entity.

I think I've been there a couple of times when a mate of mine went to shore on leave in Zeebrugge.

Do any of you know a drink called Baby Guiness?

What, belgium boring? Guess he went to the wrong places then

Brugge is pretty but super touristy. Ghent is pretty but not very touristy, so nice to visit. Lots of bars and you can go out pretty well too, and there's frequently good parties if you know where to be. Antwerp is sorta nice, and Brussels is pretty cool too (and good nightlife as well). Am not really familiar with anything east or south of Brussels. All around Belgium there's a lot of cultural stuff to do (I think they're trying to profile themselves that way the past couple of years). If you do go to Belgium, let me know in advance so I can let you know what there's to do
