You're trying to have it both ways, aren't you? Food is different, and it does matter.

When it comes to shortages and people literally starving in developing economies, you acknowledge social unrest or rioting. Then subsidies are a necessary thing.

Turn that around for developed countries that provide the food, and you don't like subsidies for farmers.

Sure, it's not a vacuum. But it's also not the freeee market you imagine it to be, where supply and demand simply follow some "natural" course of equilibrium.
