Shortly today the UK's national debt will pass 13 figures for the first time and go above £1 trillion.

It seems like a large chunk of the debt on that site is listed as "Other departments"...any idea what those are?

Nice to see the UK finally catching up with the rest of the developed world. Well...except Illinois, they just raised their taxes 66% to stem their increasing debt.

I wonder who China borrows money from?

If hindsight is 20-20, why is it so often ignored?

The information is all here: http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/2010_june_budget.htm (It's a bit annoying to page through, though.) I'm unaware if there's a better representation out there, like the US' Death and Taxes.

Of course, this particular 'bombshell' is an artificially relevant number due to our obsession with big round numbers in base 10 (in this case, denominated in GBP). In fact, UK debt was likely to break 1 trillion pounds eventually anyways, it's just a matter of when. Debt as a proportion of GDP is a much more worrisome statistic.

Would it be any better in base 16? You can have big, round numbers there as well!

Yes, but I'm afraid most people aren't excited about big round numbers except in bases 10 or 2 (and only a pretty small chunk of people really care about base 2). I find it a little wearying.
