They'd still be after a degree; a grad student has very little options when they disagree with their prof, because there's always going to be 20 undergrads available who could do a roughly comparable performance to yours. This doesn't apply to the super special cases, but they'd probably get funded by the university itself if nothing else in the free market university system; they're good PR for the establishment!
