So in light of most members supporting anti-discrimination laws..what about reverse discrimination?

Gay pub can bar heterosexual drinkers

A MELBOURNE pub catering for gay men has won the right to refuse entry to heterosexuals in a landmark ruling at the state planning tribunal.


The owners of Collingwood's Peel Hotel applied to ban straight men and women to try to prevent "sexually based insults and violence" towards its gay patrons.


The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last week granted the pub an exemption to the Equal Opportunity Act, effectively prohibiting entry to non-homosexuals.

So is it ok for this pub, that caters to gay men, to deny entrance to heterosexual men/women? They're discriminating right? Based on their sexuality, they're not allowing them in (the owners give some excuses, which I don't buy. You have security guards to kick anyone out who's misbehaving).

Is this case of discrimination different to that of the Christian hotel owners, or the florist? Many of you were of the opinion that they do not have the right to discriminate on their property, so do you think the same of the owners of the gay bar?

It's funny though..you have this 'Equal Opportunity Act' but there's now some fine print to it that would read "Not really."

Discrimination is discrimination. Modifying it with reverse says it's the opposite of discrimination, but that's not what you mean here.

And no, the gay bar shouldn't be able to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. It should, of course, be able to toss anyone misbehaving, and that should include insulting gays.

Well my opinion is that a business owner should be able to do what he wants... however if we are going to have "equality laws" then they should apply to all groups.

How would a bar even enforce this without becoming the lamest place on earth? How many incidents were there?

Not that I've ever been to Melbourne, nor am I familiar with their pubs/bars, but I'd assume that the place would have gotten just as many incidents as any other random straight or gay bar. I think they were just using the whole incidents thing as an excuse to justify their case.
