Thread: Another Reason the Middle East is Terrible

Can't we get back to insulting each other over more pertinent issues?
Hope is the denial of reality

Gah, I tried to read the posts here, but one page of 5th grade lunchroom insults was just too much.

I suspect I'm actually not going to let this one go until I see someone actually making an effort. I spend an awful lot of time around here translating people through misunderstandings or trying to find ways to explain things better while everyone else mostly. . . acts the way I've been doing in this thread. No one makes even a token try to get out of their heads and see things from the other guy's perspective.
Last night as I lay in bed, looking up at the stars, I thought, “Where the hell is my ceiling?"

That might be true, Fuzzy. But it's also not your responsibility to "translate" for others, is it? In fact, that's kind of irritating. You come off as the detached professorial type with a red pencil, critiquing how people write to one another, instead of just stating your own opinion of a topic.

It's also incredibly irritating to see people talking past each other, refusing to take the time look for the disconnect between them so they can actually communicate. Particularly when that disconnect looks pretty obvious.

I agree, it's wilting to see us talk past one another for the sake of some weird correctedNess.

However, not many of us spend hours reading back page upon page, just to correct someone's seemingly "incorrect" manner of communicating! Seriously, Fuzzy, we're all trying to communicate with one another. When that gets frustrating, the last thing we need are interjections from someone sounding like our Teacher or Parent. Agree or disagree, or offer a fresh voice and opinion! But dissing others for style or content isn't the same as expressing your own POV. I've been saying that for ages.

That's not my translating, that's something specifically in how I react to you. And I did finally get a grasp on your perspectives, but since they start with "I know what I know. Don't confuse me with the facts," it doesn't help move discussion forward at all. I rarely translate for or to you, because it usually won't make a difference.

er. it's probably a good thing he resists the urge to be like the other monkeys just so they don't feel so bad about being monkeys. there's nothing and no-one we don't want to corrupt eh

I just realised I got lumped into some sort of "clique" with Khen when I spend more time than anyone else asking him to tone down the crazy. clearly i'm a crazy leftie in name only but that isn't going to stop anyone from dehumanising me.

i've never seen lewk pressed into a corner he hasn't already gleefully placed himself in. as for his own actions, he's made it clear that he enjoys trolling. I recall someone dragging his wife into the attacks once and most people thought that was not okay. I woulda flipped out at that. if he does ever flip out and I call for his head you're welcome to refer me to this thread

Bullshit. You treat everyone here the same...we are your pupils, you are our teacher. You don't react well to me because I'm not a textbook, don't regurgitate textbook data, and refuse to treat you like a professor or teacher grading me. If you want that kind of discourse or academic "superiority", you should be a lawyer or legislator. Don't waste your time in a discussion forum like this.....you may have to deal with *gasp* views and opinions from the unenlightened and unwashed masses. People like me just won't shut up, or take your word as gospel.

I'm not a white paper, a dissertation, or a legal decision, so you don't know how to talk to me, or people like me. Even if I was a guest at your family dinner table....

Though dost protest too much. You constantly attack everyone (here and in "the real world) who dare provide a nuanced explanation for a given event. It's gotten to the point where someone being an expert in something is enough for you to feel victimized by them and dismiss them out of hand.

brattiness aside we're all teachers to one another. it's the best thing we can be. it's my favourite thing about this community, even though I occasionally have doubts about specific pedagogical approaches. I wouldn't want this to turn into a nursing-home break-room, UGH

I do have a pedantic bent and I like explaining things. But I can have decent conversations with most other people on here. Just not you. I don't react well to you because you're not interested in either fact or truth, you're only interested in however you happen to perceive things, and your holistic approach in discussion* leaves you jumping damn near randomly from point to point so no one else can get any sort of handle on the rapidly jumping topic. Nor are you interested in what anyone else says. As I've said in other threads, you're only ever really talking with yourself. Fairly understandable considering no one else can keep up.

*Nothing wrong with recognizing that a bunch of things are connected, but since you're absolutely unwilling to focus, you will always digress into a confusing ramble which no one can make sense of, including you if you ever went back and read it at some later time. Every discussion is little removed from "so when the people in New York. . . it's cold in New York right now isn't it? You know, you never see butterflies in the cold. Pretty butterflies. I wonder if there are any butterflies outside my house right now? Why are you trying to talk about New York, I'm outraged about the overuse of pesticides, why aren't you?"

Cheers for the "experts" that everyone agrees with?

The best teachers are "facilitators", not judge and jury, not staunch experts trying to pass on their previously learned knowledge as gospel to their following students. The best teachers aren't just critics of what we've done wrong, but how we may educate the Professors of what they've accepted as dogma.

The best teachers are also students themselves, ready and willing to learn from the next generation. The worst teachers are those who just keep spewing conventional wisdom, because that's what they learned.

Sorry you feel think that way. Most times when I post I'm thinking of my own views and trying to incorporate my sons' views, too. Rather like in our Atard Ron Paul Revolution thread. Remember that?

I wonder if there are any butterflies outside my house right now? Why are you still trying to talk about New York, it's overuse of pesticides that are important"
That's the beauty of this forum, though. D & D is not a journalistic newspaper or a university classroom, it's not an academic blog or a collection of expert opinions, or politicians with a platform. It's a bunch of random people from many nations discussing and debating life, politics, sociology, culture, history...etc. A place we can opine without being a student, professor, expert or politician.

(If we crave a different kind of conversation or want to write a certain way, there is always the main page of The World Forgotten. Not too popular, last I checked. People who want to write that way are either students, professors, journalists, or politicians. They can find that kind of thing in other places, not much reason to post it here, right?)

This part is just for you, Fuzzy. I'm very interested in what others say, especially if there is a personal experiential note. Something that signals their opinion isn't made just from books or teachers, but incorporates their personal experiences, too. You never share those personal notes....why not? Sorry if you feel think others can't keep up....but I think you are wrong there, I'm not just talking to myself but trying to appeal to others to listen to their guts. Conflicts and quandaries alike. Not sure why you feel think that's such a bad thing.

The light that once I thought compassion still casting shadows in your action
The words you shared were cold transactions that bring me to curse what you've done
When you're up there absorbed in greatness with such success you've grown complacent
I hope you scorch your many faces when you fly too close to the sun
