How in the modern era is a national border an "actual border" anyway? What will change on the border that's a problem for you?

I went to Scotland for the first time earlier this year, got a train to Edinburgh. At no stage was there any way to no when we left England and entered Scotland - I kept checking on Google Maps on my iPhone out of idle curiousity but there was nothing there to say so. That wouldn't change.
