Hmm...he is pretty hot, which would be my only real reason for wanting to see the film...

I don't think you'd even notice the hair what with all the lens flare from those abs
In the future, the Berlin wall will be a mile high, and made of steel. You too will be made to crawl, to lick children's blood from jackboots. There will be no creativity, only productivity. Instead of love there will be fear and distrust, instead of surrender there will be submission. Contact will be replaced with isolation, and joy with shame. Hope will cease to exist as a concept. The Earth will be covered with steel and concrete. There will be an electronic policeman in every head. Your children will be born in chains, live only to serve, and die in anguish and ignorance.
The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference.

Yeah, I could manage just groping around blindly. Sometimes you have to sacrifice.

    Princess Mononoke

10/10 - I reckon that Hayao Miyazaki is on par with Walter Disney, if not better at his best. Princess Mononoke is certainly just that. It's not often that I feel inspired or overjoyed these days, but the movie did that to me.

Thor, liked it in this type of movies. But he was bloody overdressed most of the time.
    Congratulations America

Amadeus and The Fountain. Amadeus was brilliant. The Fountain wasn't...
    Your search had no results.

Finally got around to seeing To Die in Jerusalem. Depressing.

Smokin Aces 2. Better story than the first one, a good actor in the main CIA role. Lots of action and bullets. I liked it

Fountain was so fucking stupid. I understand it was trying to be alternative, but the way they tried to tell the 2 stories that were really one, at the same time, it was really bad.

Saw Thor recently. I went in with low expectations, and it was surprisingly decent. No Dark Knight, certainly, not even as good as the Iron Man movies, but I enjoyed it. I think that was the longest stinger yet at the end too.

Also saw Avatar recently, via netflix. It was popular enough that I wanted to see what the fuss was about. This one met my low expectations. It was at best mediocre. Not recommended.

Best movie ever! From soundtrack and period costumes and makeup and lighting to story line and editing. My favorite movie of all time. At first, the accents were confusing because they weren't consistent. Only a couple of actors (mostly Italian) spoke with an accent. Everyone else was just speaking American English, including the King of France. I've seen it so many times I know the continuity errors, like zippers down the back of ladies dresses, or candles that were tall in one scene and short in the next.

Still, the only movie I've ever seen in a totally packed theatre that received a standing ovation, and everyone stayed to watch the credits. Truly an awesome movie, about an awesome composer.

Saw X-Men: First Class yesterday. I was very surprised to see the good reviews it had gotten considering how shitty the last two X-Men movies have been (3 and Wolverine), so I decided to take a chance on it. Freaking great! Michael Fassbender (the British operative from Inglourious Basters, among other, more recent roles) has serious star power, and I thought almost everyone else did a stand-up job. The story was fun, and the origins bits are fun to see pieced together. Great cameos, as well.

Wow - A standing ovation? Have never been to a movie where people have applauded, no matter how good the movie.

    British reservedness/reticence maybe.

At times I have certainly wanted to applaud a movie.

And yes, Amadeus was a good'un.

Only saw it happen at premieres, avant premiers, or film festivals. People in the US seemed more.. involved with films in the cinema when I was there anyway, more laughing with, and cheering with the film. With some films, it's a nice extra to have an involved crowd (saw the Simpsons and the bourne ultimatum in NYC)

Recently you occasionaly have someone starting to clap at the credits, only to look around a bit embarrassed to be the only one but I think it is becoming more common here.

Oh, and I watched Rope, excellent movie! Interesting shots, too.

Last week I watched The Town (pretty good!), Paths of Glory (very good!) and El Secreto De Sus Ojos (or the secret in their eyes, also very good!).

Now I'm off to watch the Scarface from 1932

T'was a long time ago, in a galaxy far away, when people went to theaters to watch a movie premiere on the big screen as an experience. Before trailers on youtube, or large screen home theaters with Dolby surround sound and woofers or tweeters that make the floor rumble or the walls sing. We sat in the large, dark, cramped theater waiting to be entertained, but were surprised by being absolutely taken away. Lost in the movie, captured by the music and characters, taken back in time to an experience we'd never had, in movies and music so perfectly put together. When the lights came up, we were still fixated on the screen. Crying in our chairs, looking for kleenex under our popcorn bags, or dry jaws gaping in amazement, moved to stand and applaud by some old reflex we'd lost long ago but suddenly remembered.

Kirk Douglas is in good movies. Same for Clint Eastwood. I saw Gran Torino for the first time this weekend.

    Agreed.

The 1932 Scarface is pretty good, too! I did not spot all the 'x'es when someone died, though, but I think I saw most.

    Agreed.

What a pile of pants. I even found myself forwarding through the lulls in the action where the characters talk to each other and bond etc.

But then the action itself was fairly shite.

I've been meaning to see what the fuss is about myself. What makes it mediocre in your books? The vast majority of people I know seem to rant/rave about it saying it's the best thing they've seen in years. Then again, some of these people have yet to see Shawshank or the original Star Wars. Fucking clowns.

Have you watched Spirited Away? Another good movie from HM.

I'm itching to see 'Super 8', I believe it's already hit the theaters for you Americans. Has anyone seen it yet?

The special effects were very well done, and I think that, along with the name of the director, might be responsible for a lot of the reception it got.

The characters were all paper thin, and there wasn't even anything to really distinguish them. There were basically only three characters in the film (bad guy, good guy, and suspicious native guy), and many actors played each of the characters. At the very start, it did look like they were going to put some depth into the characters (grumpy good guy, jealous good guy), but then it's as if they just forgot about all that after the first ten minutes and defaulted everyone back to the most basic archetypes. More annoying to me was that everybody in the movie seemed to be carrying the idiot ball at all times.

So it's not a character driven narrative, clearly, but movies without strong characters can still be good if they have a decent plot. Unfortunately, Avatar fails here too. The story, as you've probably heard, is just Pocahontas with an extra scoop of heavy-handed moralizing. White man falls in love with native, becomes accepted by natives, saves natives from other white men. The plot was very much paint-by-numbers, and nothing that happened really came as a surprise at all. There was one interesting idea in the whole thing, but it went completely unexplored in favor of more special effects. The whole movie is ultimately very shallow.

I think this might be making the movie sound worse than it actually was now. It wasn't unwatchable, it just wasn't very good.

    Agreed for the most part.

Except for Giovanni Ribisi, he managed to bring some colour to his character. But then I'm probably a tad biased as I think he's a top actor that always plays interesting characters.

Saw Predators last night. Thought it was going to be another franchise-buster playing on the Alien/Predator theme for quick bucks. Not as bad as I was anticipating though, one or two unexepected twists. And it was nice to see Adrian Brody again.

Avatar is indeed mediocre at best. The story is basically pocahontas yeah, very boring none of my friends liked it much, either. I just saw it because it was the first 3D for me.

The appeal of Avatar was almost entirely the visual experience in the theatre. The story was formulaic and predictable. The performances were fine but not spectacular. But the visuals, especially in 3D on the Big Screen, were amazing. I wouldn't bother to rent it, unless I had a big 3D flat screen. And btw, my inlaws just got one and while I pooh-poohed the whole concept before hand, when I sat down and watched Megamind and some other stuff, I was surprised and delighted. It looks great.

Anyway, finally saw True Grit the other day and yes, its a great film. Loved it. Gave it 5 stars on Netflix, which is rare.

I HATE it when people applaud movies. Applause is to show appreciation for live PEOPLE, not an inannimate screen.

I love Spirited Away. One of the best films I've seen. Also, Howell's Moving Castle was really good too, not as good, but good.

    Thing's called "Howl's Moving Castle", y'know?
When the stars threw down their spears
And watered heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?
