NE Amerikan Challenge: Sleep without A/C Tonight

Due to occasionally living in the desert, I've come to be okay with sleeping without A/C. Plus it saves me lots of money and overall I guess it's good for the environment.

But it's now 92 degrees F (33C) at night in the northeast US. It was 103 today, which cancelled my soccer game.

The question is, can anyone experiencing the US heat wave handle sleeping without air conditioning tonight? Or in general at these temperatures? I'm not sure I can.

Children and camp counselors all over the place are enjoying the heat wave without AC. So are plenty of other people, and I'm sure they're all miserable and as close to naked as their modesty allows for. It's only 86 degrees here right now. The past couple of days we've had evening thunderstorms that cooled things off fairly rapidly, but no such luck tonight.

Hell, even the poolwater is fucking hot.

The humidity is what's killer, though.

I spent 6 some odd years camping monthly without A/C, heat sometimes made me skip the sleeping bag, and sometimes I woke up with ice on said sleeping bag.
Yet I'm still not crazy enough to sleep in this house without the A/C set at 78. Brandy is like a fucking oven, and if Scarlett wakes up, or Ocean wonders in....

Although Florida's summer rains have finally returned after going missing for several years, so we aren't as bad off as most places, Brent even mowed the front yard with our push reel lawn motor today at around 3pm. That thing is so awesome.

Hell, there is no way my A/C goes above 74F. I'm hot blooded and wearing as little clothing as possible without offending the neighbors. I can't live without A/C this week for sure. I feel terrible for those who don't have A/C, or people who are working outside.

EDIT: It's already 99F and only noon here in VA...

Yesterday was brutal, hit 102 before noon, still in the 90's long after sunset and HUMID.

No, I don't do well without A/C. Last month ours went on the fritz, and the inside temp at night was high 80's.

I am going to a wedding today, but I'm stopping to visit a relative who is moving to the Zionist Entity.

I was just told that she doesn't (and has never) had air conditioning. Somehow I never noticed this before. And I have to be in a full suit. It's 33 degrees C.

My shop is a comfy 68 degrees. I don't mind heat so much, but I can't sleep with the humidity.

Spur of the moment decision. I was going to go to Australia with a friend, but her family rescinded my invitation after I already got time off work. So, I could either stay in Austin and not do much, or take a trip. And now here I am at EWR waiting for the plane to ARN.

They consume so much goddam power.

So, like I was saying, Florida has so far escape the triple digit heat; mid and high 90s, but thats expected.
But we're stuck inside just as bad. Took these a few minutes ago.



There is a 4-5 foot ditch between that fence and that truck. These are our afternoon showers, and the summer has been like this almost every day.

We do hog a lot of power for A/C, but it's the only way to fight the damn humidity. Without A/C when it's 80+ in the house, everything gets damp, even fabrics and wood. We live in a valley so there's often no cross-breeze at all, just stagnant wet heat. No piddly fan blowing humid air around changes that.

S'pose it depends on the region....in Michigan we didn't have A/C but a whole-house attic fan to suck the hot air out, with cross ventilation from windows. Shade trees helped keep things cooler. I've also been in Arizona when it's 105 in the shade, and people would say it's tolerable as a "dry heat". That's bull, of course. But homes with thick adobe walls, shaded windows or special glass, and tile floors were 20 degrees cooler, even after baking in the sun all day.

Ya, humidity is what does me in. I've lived without A/C before, I think I was 8 when my parents had their central air installed. The thought of having no A/C at my stage of life would make me homicidal. No kidding. (Could be a woman hormonal thing)

I could live without heat for the most part though, since this area doesn't experience temps below 30 for more than a few days in a row. I'll probably take this statement back in February I'm sure

Exactly. It got much worse with this whole peri-menopause hot flash crap. It's bad enough to sleep with a towel on the pillow, wake up drenched in sweat and have to change clothes (and sometimes sheets). No way I'm doing that without the hot flashes.

Always. (it's still one of the coldest places in the Northeast, which is why I'm still alive...)


In the mean-time, the neighbors turn on their even LOUDER A/C (we're 3 feet away from their house) even when it's 80 degrees outside, and they left it on all day today... even though they were NOT AT HOME...

If you're 3 feet from their A/C unit and it's too loud....then close your windows and get a new A/C unit for yourself. Or earplugs.
