In highschool? I don't really think so. It's my last year there and I moved across the country between sophomore-junior year. I jumped into a group of people that have grown up together. I can and do try to meet/befriend new people but when they see the new kid and their friend since the 3rd grade in the hallway, who are they going to want to talk to? That and damn, these kids are immature. There are so many cliques and I can't find a way into any of them that I am even remotely interested in, regardless they don't have much interest in me. I have a few "friends" but I haven't gotten as close to them as I'd like to. I try, though.You still have a lot to look forward to...
In college it's a clean slate. Everyone is in the same boat. They don't know anyone and they are all out looking for some new friends.
Wait, what? Something about being on an "engineering floor"? Well, WTF is that all about? Is that how dorm rooms are assigned these days? For crying out loud, I thought that crap ended a couple of decades ago, along with Girls Only dorms.
Like Ball Hall for female-only IU nursing students at the IU Medical Center Campus? Visitors had to ring a buzzer and check in with the matron hall supervisor 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Males could only enter individually and not in groups, and only if a female resident came to the window and signed them in. All visitors had restricted hours, and had to check out by 10 pm. After 10 pm there was no entry for anyone, for any reason. I kid you not. But that was....ages ago.
Some universities are still that way, GGT. Usually religious-based ones (Liberty University in VA is one where no males are allowed in the female dorms after a designated time, and had to check in. My close friend had a girlfriend up there when we were in school, he said he felt like a criminal even stepping in the door).
Most dorms I've seen in the last 5 years (my brother graduated in 2007, so that would be the last move-in I've had to help with) have girls dorms one floor, guys the next. I don't think any hard-lined rules about opposite sex visiting though. Honor floors may require "quiet" hours where people aren't being loud after 10pm or whatever, so people can sleep/study.

Hmm, my real name is spelled different from the norm. I've been picked on for other things in my life, but never my name....You're gonna get picked on at some time in your life, regardless of your name....
Plus kids are dumb. If your name isn't something that can be rhymed easily or is really close to something pejorative (or your parents are dumbasses who name their kids "Gaylord" or the like), you should be fine. Well, as it regards getting picked on for your name, at least.

All depends on the class/teacher. Perhaps if you merely had a different teacher the "busy work" or workload may be significantly different. I'm glad you're prioritizing, and getting it all done. Yup, I've made some interesting friends. Classes have only recently begun. We have had no assessments yet and the closest one will be in a month or two. I'm assuming groups will inherently begin to form closer to test dates. but some haikus I wrote during my short break for your reading pleasure:
