I'm actually taking most of Halloween week off to use up my required vacation time before it resets in mid November. FMLA gave me 3 weeks off for my mom, but that came completely out of my sick time since I had so much of that saved up. Most librarians run for the hills in the summer, sucks for those that stay, but man, do we get to push stuff around to fit our schedules for the rest of the year

Makes me wonder what Dread's vacation time meant per calendar year or fiscal year. If he could have consolidated vacation time off over holidays like Thanksgiving/Hanukkah/Christmas/New Years, he most likely would have. Would have been pretty sweet to be able to do that. Nice chunk of paid time off, while visiting family, and enough time off for one's self, too.
But maybe only Europeans or Canadians with four week vacation minimums are able to schedule that kind of break?
I get that. Though I think the idea of a "list" sounds more formal and frenzied than it actually is. Basically, my job requires a lot of mental engagement and can be pretty exhausting. And I've been doing the work of 2.5-3 people since March. If I just took a week with no agenda, I would probably sit around, watch movies and read all week. And drink and sleep. While that's all good and well, I can always do that on weeknights after work. To get at least some fulfillment, I need some rough idea of things I want to do that are different. So I made a list of stuff I would possibly like to do. If I do those things, great. If not, whatever. Most Americans feel fortunate to get two paid weeks off per year. For many US workers, vacation time means unpaid time off.
US Teachers are often cited as those who have "three months off" every year, but the truth is....most teachers take part-time jobs during the summer months. Bartending, life-guarding at pools, working at summer camps, academic tutoring, etc. Not because they want to, but because they have to get more income, especially if they have families and young children.
No offense to Dread, but the people I'd like to have time enough to navel-gaze and totally relax, are our public school educators. It's disturbing to me, to see our teachers working at Target or Home Depot during the summer months, or at Starbucks or department stores during holidays.
By the end of this week, I will have taken 12 vacation days this year. How that is exceptional and why you feel the need to badger me about this is beyond me.
I didn't take a vacation for two years, so I have a lot of days in reserve. I rarely get a chance to use them, so I think long and hard about the best way to make the best of them. This forum is one place I use to bounce-around ideas and get suggestions, because you all are smart, dynamic people with good ideas.

So far this was a great day. Cleaned windows. Did some home fixing for my mom. Spent time with the kids. Drank. Had home-made cakes with friends.
Damn, you need a vacation! I've not badgered you at all, but this does seem like the second or third time you've posted about your vacation time, or time off, where to go, Switzerland or wherever. Also sounds familiar when you say you haven't had a vacation in two years. Was that two years ago? Has it been that long since you went on that bicycle/camping trip that ended badly?

PS, most Americans get 7 to 14 days of vacation time per year total, depending on employer and length of employment. Consider yourself Lucky.

Yes, I've said I didn't take a vacation for two years a few times to explain why I have so many vacation days to burn. That two year gap (during which I was accruing vacation days) ended 18 months ago. But I only used a portion of the days I accrued. And my vacation days roll over at taxpayer expense sort of like income, so I have to use them at some point or another.
Maybe you could spend your vacation time cleaning up your machine or hunting down a better ISP? You're double posting all over the place lately.

I work in 'academia', GGT. Similar to education, I guess. But not in the States.

I have 20 days, so 4 weeks. Which is the legal minimum. But I have more than a week over-time that I could get back.

The problem isn't that people don't get offered vacation days here, the problem is that in our workaholic culture people refuse to take their vacation days, or just want double pay by working and taking a payout for their vacation days.

Having said that, I spent my birthday and 14 days unpacking, putting flat packs together and drilling various holes for blinds/curtains and finally doing the garden.
I also get 26 days annual leave, which 4 are already tied up for the Christmas break by default. I also get 'Banked hours' so any hours I work outside of my contracted hours I can take off when I want. I also finish at 1:30pm on a Friday, but do sometimes have to work till much later depending on workload.
When I was at Lotus I used to work from 8:30am till 4:40pm Mon-Thursday and then finished at 12:30 on a Friday. I miss those hours.
I get 25 days a year, but I also work on a somewhat different schedule which effectively means that every 4th week I am off. (28 day cycle, 19 days in Amsterdam, 9 days in Istanbul).
During the 9 days in Istanbul I do as little as I can get away with.
1. Pot Noodles.
2. A good computer game.
3. An extensive collection of pornography.

So far this has been splendid.
Biking. Mojitos. Apple picking. Drunkenly wandering around semi-industrial areas late at night. Going out to meals far more than I normally do. Saw Martha Marcy May Marlene. Got oysters.
I also pulled-out my old 35MM Nikon FE-2, bought 4 rolls of film and exposed it. The film processing is absurdly expensive, so I'm definitely not doing this again anytime soon. But the photos I got back were interesting. My manual focusing skills have gone to hell, but not too bad.
I just calculated my vacation time for the rest of the year. Looks like I will have 38 hours left on the 31st for use next year. A bit less than usual because I have stayed home a couple of days this year because I didn't feel like working.
